(sociologist/priest/theologian/novelist as his interests dictate)
churns out books about as rapidly as some of us put together
lectures! I don't endorse all his theological work (which tilts
toward the left of even modern Catholic intellectuals), nor do I
approve all the notions championed in his novels (though I've found
them readable and generally inoffensive), but I've usually found
his sociological studies useful.
In Faithful Attraction: Discovering Intimacy, Love and Fidelity in
American Marriage (NY: Tom Doherty Associates, c. 1991), he draws
on the most trustworthy of recent public opinion polls to validate
the soundness of marriage in America. "This is a report on fidelity
and intimacy in American marriage based on the first national
probability sample study ever attempted on love and intimacy among
married Americans. The typical finding of the study, as hinted by
the title, is that fidelity is common in American marriage, even
epidemic. Indeed it might be called pandemic rather than epidemic"
(p. 20).
Rather than relying on impressionistic, anecdotal, journalistic
accounts, frequently erroneous popular opinion, or skewed "polls"
like the oft-cited (and notoriously-flawed) Kinsey Report or more
recent Hite Reports, Greeley grounds this study in a 1989-1990
Gallup Poll, "the first full-scale national probability sample
study of sexuality and fidelity in marriage" (pp. 24-25) and
another equally careful research endeavor. To the extent we can
find accurate sociological data regarding the subject, Greeley
provides it.
Given the largely negative press about marriage and family, evident
in a 1987 Newsweek cover story which prodded Greeley's study, this
work provides a healthy, encouraging antidote. For he argues--and
provides the data needed--that marriages in this country remain
solidly monogamous and strong (especially where religious faith
exists) and provide couples maximal happiness in life. There's no
ignoring the reality of divorce, which is not treated in this
study, but among those who are married there is much to
applaud.
Throughout the various items presented, one factor emerges:
religion improves marriage. "Religion is by far the most powerful
correlate of marriage attitudes and behavior we have yet discussed
in this book. Although many journalists and social scientists
assume that secularization is a demonstrated fact, there is no
evidence to support this assumption in the United Sates. Moreover,
there is no stronger predictor of marital happiness than religious
devotion" (p. 221).
Spouses who share religious convictions "are 27 percentage points
more likely to report agreement on general values," and, even more
impressive, the percentage rises to 36 if they go to church each
week (p. 55). Only 11% of those who pray together think divorce
might be possible, compared to 30% of those who don't. Still more:
"only 1% of those who pray together often and report the highest
quality of sex think divorce is possible" (p. 63). "God and
pleasure are, quite literally, a hard combination to beat" (p.
69).
Nearly one-third of the respondents regularly pray with their
spouse. "Whether they pray often together or not is a very powerful
correlate of marital happiness, the most powerful we have yet
discovered. Seventy-five percent of those who pray say that the
marriage is very happy, as opposed to 57% of those who do not pray
so often" (p. 229). Still more: "Prayer, it is worth noting, is a
much more powerful predictor of marital satisfaction than frequency
of sexual intercourse--though the combination of sex and prayer
correlates with very, very high levels of marital fulfillment" (p.
230).
Despite the generally up-beat tone of this tome, there are some
discouraging words. Divorce continues to rip apart marriages and
families--nearly one in every two of today's marriages seem
destined to dissolve. Divorce leaves women, especially,
impoverished and disadvantaged. In almost requiring that women
work, modern society has placed considerable strain on those try to
sustain both marriage and vocation. Greeley's study shows that
today's working women are less happy than housewives of an earlier
generation--but they are not less happy with marriage. What
distresses them is a society which demands they work full-time as a
career woman and still be a full-time mother.
Though there are certainly problems in the contemporary home, this
book provides substantial reasons, especially for Christians, to
face the future with confidence. Marriage and the family have
survived and will survive. And it's nice to have some data to fuel
our hopes.

This book is written from the perspective that statistics is an
integrated set of tools used together to uncover the story
contained in numerical data. Accordingly, the book comes with a
disk containing a series of real data sets to motivate discussions
of appropriate methods of analysis. The presentation is based on a
conceptual approach supported by an understanding of underlying
mathematical foundations. Students learn that more than one method
of analysis is typically needed and that an ample characterization
of results is a critical component of any data analytic plan. The
use of real data and SPSS to perform computations and create
graphical summaries enables a greater emphasis on conceptual
understanding and interpretation.

Null-A series. It is a sequel to the original sequence by A.E. Van
Vogt. In the previous volumes, non-Aristotelian logic is a system
that provides a sane view of life. Null-A has developed various
means of stripping the emotional interpretations from thoughts,
including the cortical-thalamic pause.
The Games Machine was built on Earth to select the rulers. The
Machine tested the minds of applicants and rejected those who had
not mastered and internalized Null-A principles. Some were given
posts in the Earth government, but those who scored the highest
were allowed to live on Venus among a same population.
But the Games Machine was subverted through the action of a
distorter, a device for shifting matter and energy through space.
The device had been supplied by Thorson, the commander of an
invasion force from the Greatest Empire. President Hardy and his
gang ruled the Earth under the Empire.
Gosseyn came to the city of the Games Machine to test his knowledge
of Null-A. Yet he was exposed as an impostor by someone from his
own village and was thrown out of his hotel. Then he met a girl who
also lacked a place to stay.
Gosseyn was later killed and returned in a new body. Gosseyn Two
met Thorson and then discovered that he had a second brain. After
killing the Imperial commander, Gosseyn Two discovered that
Lavoisseur was another copy of himself.
Gosseyn Two discovered more about the Greatest Empire and foiled
the invasion with a little help from Crang. He met Leej -- a
Predictor -- on Yalerta. Then another version of himself was
awakened accidentally. Eventually, Gosseyn Three captured and
imprisoned Eron.
In this novel, Gilbert Gosseyn is a man with a double brain and
serial immortality. If he dies, his memories are transferred to a
younger body. His second brain provides the ability to shift
himself and other things through space like a distorter. But his
earliest memories are lies. Who has created him and why?
Lavoisseur was the head of the Semantic Institute, the organization
that built the Games Machine. He was an older copy of Gosseyn, but
has additional memories. Gosseyn suspects that he is the
Chessplayer, the man who is manipulating him.
X was a member of President Hardy's gang. He was also another
Gosseyn body who was damaged and had a higher metabolism. This
allowed his thoughts to be received by Lavoisseur. Apparently he
was planted on Hardy as a source of information.
Eldred Crang is a Venusian detective who discovered the invasion
forces and infiltrated the Imperial organization. Later, Crang
returned to the Greatest Empire as Patricia's husband.
Erno the Red is the Emperor of the Greatest Empire, the largest
principality in the galaxy. He has the ability to see through
walls.
Patricia Hardy is the woman who Gosseyn remembers as his wife. But
she was also the daughter of President Hardy and the sister of
Eron. So who is she?
In this story, Gosseyn Two is visiting Nirene. As the space liner
is making its last distorter jump to the planet, Gosseyn is
separated from the liner and diverted to an apartment. There
Gosseyn finds the charred body of Crang and indications that
Patricia has been there.
Gosseyn decides that he is on Nirene. Then he uses a device in the
apartment to view the murder. He sees Eron appear as a Shadow and
kill Crang.
Then the police appear and Gosseyn is arrested. At the secret
police headquarters, Gosseyn learns that agents of the defeated
Greatest Empire are active within the Interplanetary League. They
have also held back some Imperial warships.
Gosseyn visits various planets within the League and discovers that
Imperial agents have infiltrated many of them. Solar systems start
disappearing into Shadow. Then he gains the memories of Gosseyn
Three from the Shadow Galaxy.
Later Gosseyn meets X in a younger body. X is still insane and is
now working for Eron. He commits multiple murders and leaves
Gosseyn to take the blame. He also destroys a lie detector before
he shifts out of the area.
Gosseyn contacts the Venusian Null-As and reports his findings.
They analyze the lie detector and start working on countermeasures.
Then Gosseyn finds himself within false realities or alternate
timelines. In some, he meets future versions of himself, but in
others he meets the Ydd, a corporate entity that exists outside the
physical universe.
This tale takes Gosseyn and his avatars further into the conspiracy
to change the future. He discovers that he knows much more than
expected. And he keeps encountering Patricia.
The author displays an amazing familiarity with Van Vogt's works.
This story is based on Van Vogt's fourth SF novel -- World of
Null-A -- and its sequels. But it also contains scenarios and
themes from his first three novels -- Voyage of the Space Beagle,
Slan, and The Book of Ptath -- as well as elements from The
Universe Maker and probably other works.
Highly recommended for Van Vogt fans and for anyone else who enjoys
tales of mind training, superpowers, and puzzling plots.

Essentials of Personnel
Assessment and Selection: Personnel Assessement and
Selection
Essentials of Personnel Assessment and Selection discusses the
essentials that managers and other well-educated people should know
about the assessment processes so widely used in contemporary
societyand so widely not understood. It emphasizes that good
prediction requires well-formed hypotheses about personal
characteristics that may be related to valued behavior at work and
the need for developing a theory of the attribute one hypothesizes
as a predictora thought process too often missing from work on
selection procedures. In addition, it explores such topics as
team-member selection, situational judgment tests, non-traditional
tests, individual assessment, and testing for diversity. The goal
is to produce an accessible guide to assessment that covers basic
and advanced concepts in a straight-forward, readable style. It
provides a review of the most relevant statistical concepts and
modern selection practices that will equip the reader with the
tools needed to be competent consumers of assessment procedures and
practices, and to be well-informed about the kinds of questions to
be answered in evaluating them. This book will appeal to instructors
of advanced undergraduate and master's level courses on personnel

selected topics, it would be useful in doctoral seminars. Also,
students interested in becoming users of research-based assessment

(More customer

author.
He is methodical and his logic is solid and he predicts the end of
civilization is near. So I spent some time trying to refute this
book and I can't. The author has presented this line of reasoning
in lectures and found that no one takes his prediction with the
weight that it deserves. He faults the audience members, but I
suspect most people following this line of argument go into denial.
It is natural when faced with the news of our demise to go into
denial or try to fight the reasoning behind this.
It is like the behavior of people in a company that is failing and
nearing its end. I've seen this a few times where many hold on to
the notion that it will turn around, and they ride it all the way
into the ground.
There is in the book a few hints of what could save us, but each is
given little chance of succeeding. The optimist in me will fight
for one of these. The scientist in me will continue to seek a flaw
in Well's reasoning. The denial in me will try to push it out of my
mind.

Apocalypse When: Calculating
How Long the Human Race Will Survive (Springer Praxis Books /
Popular Science)
This book will be a key trailblazer in a new and upcoming field.
The author’s predictive approach relies on simple and intuitive
probability formulations that will appeal to readers with a modest
knowledge of astronomy, mathematics, and statistics. Wells’
carefully erected theory stands on a sure footing and thus should
serve as the basis of many rational predictions of survival in the
face of not only natural disasters such as hits by asteroids or
comets, but perhaps more surprisingly from man-made hazards arising
from genetic engineering or robotics.Any formula for predicting
human survival will invite controversy. Dr Wells counters
anticipated criticism with a thorough approach in which four lines
of reasoning are used to arrive at the same survival formula. One
uses empirical survival statistics for business firms and stage
shows. Another is based on uncertainty of risk rates. The third,
more abstract, invokes Laplace’s principle of insufficient reason
and involves an observer’s random arrival in the lifetime of the
entity (the human race) in question. The fourth uses Bayesian
theory. The author carefully explains and gives examples of the
conditions under which his principle is valid and provides evidence
that can counteract the arguments of critics who would reject it
entirely. His deflection of possible criticisms results from two
major premises: selecting the proper random variable and “reference
class" to make predictions, and the recognition that if one does
not know the law that governs a process, then the best prediction
that can be made is his own formula.

univariate approach, every once in a while a publication comes
along that focuses on a multivariate explanation that recognizes
the complexity and richness of human development. This is one such
publication. Focusing on early substance abuse, the authors compare
such development to a stream "meandering through a meadow", joined
by other streams and gathering momentum, growing into a "rushing
rapid that cascades over rocks", but with various deflections from
rocks along the way (the "dynamic cascade"). The primary "streams"
include biological factors, social ecology, early parenting, early
peer relations, adolescent parenting, and adolescent peer
relations, and although the "streams" individually result in modest
effects, in combination they are very predictive, early influences
are primary, adaptation is a continuous but a reciprocal
transactional process, sensitive periods are important, and there
are always opportunities for change. Although at times the
statistical analysis of a significant amount of data can be a bit
tedious, I was very impressed with this book, and think it
represents a significant step forward in the understanding and
potential prevention of early onset substance use. I recommend it
highly!

this book is its emphasis on the role of inflammation in heart
disease and all the markers of inflammation that can be tested for.
A focus on cholesterol is not enough.
The cause of inflammation should also be emphasized and I would
have suggested a bigger emphasis on the role of pathogens in
inflammation, in particular, bacteria, such as Chlamydiae
pneumoniae and Mycoplasma.
These and other pathogens may also partly explain why so many
people have trouble exercising and losing weight. As they age, they
acquire more pathogens that cause health problems that accumulate
over time. This may be associated with many diseases of aging. The
Autoimmunity Research Foundation is just one group looking into
this.

The introduction covers prior work in the field and lays the

The key strengths of this book are the framework, which is highly

book. In the first five chapters Wilcox presents the classical
statistical methods with simplicity and great care. Emphasis is
properly placed on the assumptions of the methods and the fact that
many times important assumptions are violated in practice. This is
all done in the first five chapters. Then in chapters 6 - 12 he
provides alternative modern methods that can work better than the
classical ones when the assumptions fail.
Chapter 6 is on bootstrap. Chapter 8 covers robust measures of
location. Chapter 9 covers statistical inference based on robust
measures of location. Chapter 10 deals with nonparametric and
robust measures of association. Chapter 11 covers robust estimates
of location and Chapter 12 "Alternative Strategies" includes rank
test, permutation tests and multiple comparison issues.
At the beginning of Wilcox's book there are three precious quotes
that you should appreciate. 1. "If at first the idea is not absurd,
then there is not hope for it" Albert Einstein. 2. "Everyone
believes in the [normal] law of errors, the experimenters because
they think it is a mathematical theorem, the mathematicians because
they think it is an experimental fact." Henri Poincare. 3. "Each
generation that discovers something from its experience must pass
that on, but it must pass that on with a delicate balance of
respect and disrespect, so that the race ... does not inflict its
errors too rigidly on its youth, but it does pass on the
accumulated wisdom plus the wisdom that it may not be wisdom."
Richard Feynman.
These quotes were well chosen to fit the theme of the book and
represent the wisdom of three great men from the 19th and 20th
Centuries.

Fundamentals of Modern
Statistical Methods: Substantially Improving Power and
Accuracy
Conventional statistical methods have a very serious flaw. They
routinely miss differences among groups or associations among
variables that are detected by more modern techniques - even under
very small departures from normality. Hundreds of journal articles
have described the reasons standard techniques can be
unsatisfactory, but simple, intuitive explanations are generally
unavailable. Improved methods have been derived, but they are far
from obvious or intuitive based on the training most researchers
receive. Situations arise where even highly nonsignificant results
become significant when analyzed with more modern methods. Without
assuming any prior training in statistics, Part I of this book
describes basic statistical principles from a point of view that
makes their shortcomings intuitive and easy to understand. The
emphasis is on verbal and graphical descriptions of concepts. Part
II describes modern methods that address the problems covered in
Part I. Using data from actual studies, many examples are included
to illustrate the practical problems with conventional procedures
and how more modern methods can make a substantial difference in
the conclusions reached in many areas of statistical research.Rand
Wilcox is a professor of psychology at the University of Southern
California. He is a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and the
American Psychological Society. Dr. Wilcox currently serves as an
associate editor of Computational Statistics & Data Analysis
and Psychometrika. He has published over 165 articles in a wide
range of statistical journals and he is the author of three other

reasonable interpretable accounts of their data or judge when to
abandon a particular strategy..."|- Perceptual and Motor Skills,

perfect for the person who is trying to learn SEM on their own. I
think it gives you enough to be able to know how to run a SEM, but
it isn't enough to really make you a pro at it.

A First Course in Structural
Equation Modeling
In this book, authors Tenko Raykov and George A. Marcoulides
introduce students to the basics of structural equation modeling
(SEM) through a conceptual, nonmathematical approach. For ease of
understanding, the few mathematical formulas presented are used in
a conceptual or illustrative nature, rather than a computational
one. Featuring examples from EQS, LISREL, and Mplus, A First Course
in Structural Equation Modeling is an excellent beginner's guide to
learning how to set up input files to fit the most commonly used
types of structural equation models with these programs. The basic
ideas and methods for conducting SEM are independent of any
particular software. Highlights of the second edition include:
review of latent change (growth) analysis models at an introductory
level; coverage of the popular Mplus program; updated examples of
LISREL and EQS; and a CD that contains all of the text's LISREL,
EQS, and Mplus examples.A First Course in Structural Equation
Modeling is intended as an introductory book for students and
researchers in psychology, education, business, medicine, and other
applied social, behavioral, and health sciences with limited or no
previous exposure to SEM. A prerequisite of basic statistics
through regression analysis is recommended. The book frequently
draws parallels between SEM and regression, making this prior
knowledge helpful.
