(More customer reviews)Let me start by
saying that this is truly a unique mobile phone. It's 20% touch
screen, and 80% slider.
I'll explain:
Before purchasing the Sony Ericsson Aino, I used the delightful
Sony Ericsson W995. The latter is really an every-day run of the
mill slider phone. It had a very good 8.1MP camera, decent video
recording, 8GB of space, and a beautiful screen. After about 9
months, I wanted to upgrade and instead of going for the Nokia X6
(which I had been planning on getting), I purchased the Aino.
For starters, the phone has a significantly better 8.1MP camera
than the W995. Also, (and ITS ABOUT TIME!) it's one of the very
first SE phones to offer 30fps (DVD standard) video recording. The
pictures are absolutely brilliant, and finally the videos look
good!
It has a capacitive touch screen (like the iPhone...it relies on
heat, NOT pressure) but this can be used only when the phone is
closed. From here, you can access your pictures, videos, the
camera, the radio, and all of your music. This is where the touch
functionality ends. When you slide the phone open, it reveals the
keypad (a rather uncomfortable one at that) and what may be the
longest phone I've ever seen.
With the slider open, this is pure Sony Ericsson. If you know
anything about SE, you'll be immediately put at ease. It has to be
one of the very best feature phones on the market. Of course, like
the W995, and unlike Symbian Nokia's, the UI really cannot be
customized. But this is totally okay because its so perfectly laid
out. The screen is GORGEOUS. SO MUCH MORE SO than the W995. It's
fast (faster than the latter) and the interface is smooth.
Everything is within intuitive reach.
Now, not everything is good. First, you can do absolutely nothing
with the phone closed (except for access what I mentioned above).
In other words, when you receive a text, you cannot even see who
sent it, let alone what it says. The screen will only say "text
message received." Essentially, this means that to do absolutely
anything other than what I mentioned the touch functions are, you
must slide the phone open. Kindof annoying when you only want to
read the text and not respond.
But, the slider is firm and precise. No wobbling. The build quality
is the very best that I have ever seen in a cell phone. Certainly
on par with the iPhone.
Let me sum up the good and the bad.
THE GOOD:
1. Up to 32GB of memory with a micro SD (unlike 8GB with previous
models).
2. The camera is now absolutely fantastic.
3. Video recording at 30fps. (This is so two-years-ago for the rest
of the phone world, but this is SE).
4. Build quality is superb.
5. Sound quality is even better.
6. Comes with a blue tooth head set that lights up and looks
great.
THE BAD
1. You have to slide the phone open to do anything, even just view
a text.
2. The keypad will take some serious getting used to...its very
very small and lacks good feedback.
3. You can only access a very limited amount of things with the
touch screen (which offers perfect response though).
Hope this helps!!!
Oh and did I mention... you can turn on your PS3 from anywhere with
a WI-FI or over-the-air connection. From there, you can stream your
movies, songs, and tv-shows. Kinda cool, huh?

(More customer reviews)Great head unit! I
bought this to replace an Eclipse AV8132 that recently got
destroyed. This unit is much more intuitive and easy to use, far
more versatile with the number of inputs and seems to be a much
higher quality product to boot. Everything is set up to be as easy
to use as possible. Flash memory and iPod control are
plug-and-play. It simply couldn't be any easier! The only reason
this got 4 stars rather than 5 is because it only has 2 sets of
outputs. One more pair and this unit would be perfect!

(More customer reviews)When I first heard
anout this product, I was a bit skeptical, because of some of the
bad reviews that this product had recived over the internet.
However, I said what the heck, I can always send it back if it
doesn't work out.
Save to say, this little wonder works great on my Vostro 1500,
despite the bad reviews. I live in a podunk little town, and I got
six very strong Digital and HD signals, and that was even without
the use of the external antenna included, wich I would not use
anyhow, due to it's magnetic base.
All my Digital and HD stations come in great, with very little or
no breakup. If it does this well in a small town like Palm Springs,
I am dying to check out what it can do in a major metro area.
However, it is not without some minor flaws; the bundled software
it uses is slow, and to be honest , it sort of sucks. I would
reccomend using something else, if possible, such as Windows Media
Player, or Dell MediaDirect for the best results.
I would highly reccomend this to any college student who doesn't
want to fight over waat they want to watch either in thier dayroom,
or spending needless money for a tv set for thier dorm room. I
would also reccomend it to travelers waiting on a connecting flight
with nothing to do, and it would be great for campers who don't
want to sink thousands of dollars into a sattelite system for thier
rig. All you need is this little wonder, a decent laptop PC, and a
few minutes of setup time, and you can have a truly portable
entertainment system that rivals any HD Home Theater system out
there, at roughly one tenth the cost. It's also very handy when the
local power goes out, as some of the newer PC's have up to 16 hours
of battery life, even on full power settings.
So I strongly reccomend this product, despite it's small
faults.

(More customer reviews)I bought this unit
to add to my Alpine IVA-W505 which was the best Alpine head unit at
the time. I'm very disappointed with the quality!!!! The graphics
are worse than the original Nintendo!! Map information is from
several years ago and no updates are yet available. The nav system
crashes and resets itself often. And if you plan on traveling out
of town it takes forever to load guidance info. It does work as a
basic nav system but it really cheapens the look of your 1000 plus
dollar head unit. If you have the money buy Alpine's dvd nav set up
or if your on a budget get a standalone garman you'll be much
happier!!

(More customer reviews)My first Acer
(owned IBM, Dell, HP). Decided to go big with a desktop replacement
laptop and use something else for mobile needs. Amazon delivered it
fairly quickly given it was free delivery and it was re-packaged
and camouflaged in an Amazon box which made me feel a bit better.
Acer does a good job of packaging (box inside box for 3 boxes in
total) and everything is well covered to avoid scratches. When it
was finally unpacked, my first impression was "my ain't she shiny
and pretty" which was followed by "my ain't she heavy and bulky."
This isn't a slim, petite machine. It has a BIG footprint as the
dimensions imply and after installing the battery (which seems
mighty small in comparison), the entire thing is...well...a beast.
But so far, this beast is super fast and super quiet (kinda of like
a strong, stealthy vampire if I can use a contemporary cliche).
Okay, let's go to the evaluation list...
Features' evaluation:
* Attractive package. Piano black outer top-shell and screen frame
with faint lines on the outside piece. Yeah, it's plastic unlike
some that are using metal these days but you have to try to keep
the weight within reason. But the downside is of course
fingerprints all over the case. I'm not crazy fussy about such
things so I can ignore it.
* Nice keyboard. Though not back-lit, the keys are nicely arranged
and have a very good feel to them. As a long-time Windows user, I
appreciate that the function keys and arrow keys (wish they were
bigger) are the dominant named/colored keys in their rightful
places and the little special functions (like turning features on
and off) are the subsidiary keys.
* Beautiful, big screen. The 17.3" screen is a very nice size and I
really like the 1600x900 resolution which is better than many
laptops of a similar size. There's a small issue with the vertical
viewing angle which is very narrow. You will find yourself
adjusting the screen a bit back and forth each time you start it up
to get the right viewing angle depending on how you're sitting.
* Decent sound. I wouldn't rave about the external sound but it's
not horrible. It required some tweaking in the settings to get a
reasonable, non-muffled quality. Granted, we usually use headphones
when playing music or games so the external sound is not the
primary way we experience it. When cranked up, there's plenty of
external volume (even a sub-woofer that fires out the bottom) to
watch video or play basic games but you'll want to use headphones
to fully experience richer, more complex sound.
* Ports aplenty. For my own purposes, there's enough ports. HDMI
and VGA are available on the left along with the sound related
jacks (kind of prefer these on the front edge but still better than
on the right). Only one USB 2.0 port on the left and the other 3
are on the right. This is a tiny bit problematic in that if you use
an external mouse (like I do) and are right-handed (like me) then
you'll ideally want the IR transmitter in the left port. Then if
you want digital sound and go with a USB headset, where do you go?
Right side where you mouse? Hmm. Well I solved the problem by
getting a mouse with a mini IR port plug and put it in a right-side
USB jack freeing up the left one for USB headphones. And use the
left side analog sound jack for basic listening. And of course, I
wish the USB ports were 3.0 compliant but that's really
future-proofing beyond what I think is truly necessary (you'll
probably need a new laptop for other reasons by the time 3.0 is the
dominant standard).
* Blu-Ray is the way. Great having a BD combo drive and everything
so far has worked perfectly. Watched a B-R disc (Terminator TV show
which looked and sounded terrific) and it came out in a beautiful
720p resolution (which given the size of this screen is just fine).
I outputted the video to my 42" 1080p TV and that came out
beautiful (in 1080p too!) without any tweaking (ATI is getting
better at this). Burned some DVD backup discs and loaded some
software. All without a hitch. I'm not crazy about the tray popping
out as it's a bit flimsy hanging out there and would have preferred
a slot loader like how the Macs do it but it works.
* Battery life? Given it's a 6 cell battery, you can't stray too
far from an outlet. If I wanted to take this on the road, I'd look
to upgrade to at least a 9 cell. You can barely squeak 60-90
minutes out of this tiny little battery (more if you dial way back
on the brightness). Also, the power brick is a decent size but not
what I would call mammoth. There is a strange aspect to the power
port which makes for plugging and unplugging a bit tricky. It fits
kind of like a key in that there's little slots that have to line
up as well as connecting to the pin. Why Acer chose this type of
connection is beyond me.
* Heat dissipation & Quiet! Probably the two biggest "positive"
surprises are how well this machine handles heat and how amazingly
quiet it is. There's a nice sized blower vent and fan on the left
side actively gets rid of most of the heat and it is extremely
(scary) quiet especially given that there's an i7 chip and a decent
1 GB ATI graphics card inside. Some machines can be hard to even
talk over or the external sound gets muffled by fan noise which is
simply not the case here. I've never once had this machine lock up
while running and I play some MMO's like Lord of the Rings Online
and Guild Wars.
* Graphics power horse. The 1 GB ATI 5650 is really a sweet-spot
card. Big enough to run most games on high settings while dialing
back just a bit for only the MOST graphically intensive, new stuff.
Yeah, it isn't a 58xx card but it doesn't take a massive cooling
fan to cool the thing either. And laptops with the 58xx cards are
even bigger and heavier than this machine. I think it's a highly
functional (DX 11 compatible) card for a high-end laptop.
* Miscellaneous. The web cam is pretty good and I actually had a
reasonable conversation using the built-in microphone over a Steam
module connection. The touch pad has a kind of Teflon coating like
on a Calphalon pan and is pretty easy to use in comparison to other
pads. A single larger rocker button on the touch pad works well.
There's some bloatware installed (McAfee trial the most annoying)
but it's not hard to uninstall what bothers you. Windows 7 64-bit
is snappy on this machine given its 8 GB of RAM. 500 GB of hard
disk space is more than enough for my needs and though maybe the
5400rpm HD is slower than some, it also consumes less energy than
the speedier 7200rpm drives. But there's plenty of guts-access
easily available under the machine if you want to put in a bigger,
faster HD. I'd like to go solid-state in the future and I don't see
a problem making that upgrade after pricing and disk size reach my
buy-point. Haven't used it's Bluetooth ability yet but I don't have
any of those devices. It has strong and fast wi-fi signal
acquisition.
Finally, I'd rate her 4.5 stars if I had that option as there's a
few small quirks preventing me from going all the way to 5 stars.
The price was right here (below $1200) and the 12 month financing
was a real bonus and what kicked me to the buy point. So overall,
I'm extremely pleased with this purchase and expect years of good
use from it.

(More customer reviews)Think about the
following before buying...
If you read all the nice reviews here about this mouse, you'll find
that most of them have some sort of issue with the mouse:
- The battery life is short (recharging cradle would be nice).
- The mouse makes noise.
- Return from power-saving mode is sluggish.
To me the last item makes the mouse nearly unusable. Often, I'll be
reading an article and try to scroll after a few seconds, but the
mouse will not do anything for more than a second. Additionally,
the mouse senses if you have your hand "in place" before powering
up, so if you ever move the mouse with just a finger or two (sure,
it's not often, but it happens), it will not work because it
doesn't power up.
UPDATED INFO (2001/11/25):
I've been in contact with Microsoft support. The customer service
representative was very thorough in trying to remedy the delay in
powering up. However, the final answer I get is, "Upon further
research I have in-fact found what you are experiencing is a
feature of the Wireless Explorer. This is by design to extend the
battery life."
One person's feature is another's bug.

(More customer reviews)I actually
purchased this device on eBay. So the price was $70 more than here
on Amazon. Alas, my mistake. But despite the price factor I don't
regret that I own Pocketbook 302. I have a white color version of
this device. It is truly one of the great e-book readers on the
market today. It got a WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. I was able
to connect it to my home network without any problems. The device
has a touch screen and a stylus that comes with it. When you turn
the pages there is less than a second interval, which is of course
a very nice indicator of how fast the device corresponds to the
button commands. It got a whole bunch of nice little applications
such as web browser and notepad. It also has some games like Sudoku
and Snake and others which I didn't really play. You can configure
buttons on the device to your liking from the settings menu. The
main deal breaker for me was that this book reads almost any
language (in my case Cyrillic) and in any format you can think of
(.rtf, .txt, .fb2, .pdf,) So you basically don't need to install
any software on your computer in order to convert books. Just
connect it to your PC and transfer the file, I usually use txt and
fb2 formats. You can hook this device up to any available WiFi and
download a book right on it using a web browser. The only drawback
of this device was a glossy screen, when on direct light; you could
see your face in there like in the mirror. But yesterday I received
a matte screen protector from the seller, free of charge and
applied on the screen. And I must say that it does make a
significant difference. The screen is a lot less glossy now. So if
you thinking of purchasing this device you should ask a seller for
matte screen protector. Another thing what you should do is to
update the firmware with the latest version. Along with the
firmware in zipped file, there comes a new improved browser, you
only need to copy it to the device. I found it working very nicely.
I don't really like the design of the flipping leather cover.
Because you have to kind of glue you device to the sticky part on
the cover. I think the design of the case could have been realized
better, for example like on Sony e-book devices. The battery life
is really great, but I noticed that when you use wifi and web
browsing it drains kind of fast. But when you just read the books
it can last for more than a month. Overall it is a really nice
ebook reader and I highly recommend it for those people who want to
be able to read on various languages, without installing any
conversion software on your PC and having a contract-free ebook
reading device.

(More customer reviews)My refurbished
TZ340 arrived today. These are my first impressions. (I own 6 other
laptops.)
This thing is small and thin. Feels like it has no battery.
Actually does weigh just a tad over 2.5 pounds. The carbon fiber is
impressive.
Speakers are lots better than my netbook, not near as loud as my
other laptops. At their highest, movies are, let's say,
comfortable.
The keys are chicklet style--widely separated and little push. But
unlike my older VAIO S150, the cursor won't skip around while
typing, so no need for Touch Freeze. Tight here.
At 11 inches it is much easier to type on than the my netbook, but
not at all like my regular laptops. Probably no extended typing on
this one.
The screen is...OMG! It's not that the color is brighter it's the
saturation! Colors are high contrast and just jump off the High
Definition screen. Like nothing I've ever seen! It's the
saturation, the WHITE (no yellow) background, and the razor (and I
do mean razor) sharp HD screen. When desktop icons make you
stare.....
Processor speed. The Core 2 Duo Ultra Lo Voltage chip is as fast as
any of my other Core 2 Duos. With the Core 2 Duo and Windows 7
Professional, absolutely no need for more than a gig of RAM. It has
infinite settings and adjustments for everything possible. I set
the power on the chip at 75% to extend the battery life (and not
dim the screen), and it is sufficiently fast, but you can feel the
chip tugging on the bridle. Powered down to 75%, and the ubiquitos
Sony fan turned down to 'quiet', the battery gets 4 hours. I guess
that's OK for the (LOTS of) use it has apparently seen.
The blue tooth, fingerprint reader, web cam, etc., I haven't messed
with.
Biggest unexpected surprises--the saturation and sharpness of the
LED Hi Def screen. Second, how fast that processor is. I guess I
was expecting what I get with Goggle Chrome stripped down on my
netbook, not what I'm getting with a real laptop and full-blown
Windows 7 Professional. Third, how light and thin it is--even with
the dual-layer DVD burner. Fourth the wifi--picks up places I
didn't know existed. Has wireless a/b/g/n--and I still don't own an
'n' router. Finally, how quiet and tight it feels. 'Lean' I guess
is the word, No fat anywhere. Not a speck of wasted space.
Disappointments--impossible to type on in poor light (those dark
keys and pale lettering), and the mouse buttons are right on the
front edge. Takes getting used to.
All in all, how Sony packed all the stuff into what looks like a
netbook, I don't know. Nobody else certainly did. It is aptly
described as ultra portable.
Probably more than you wanted to know, but it is a powerfully
packed little unit that once was prohibitively expensive, and
beyond the reach of us mortals.

(More customer reviews)I decided to
purchase this one because it met and exceeded my requirements for a
NETBOOK. The specs on this baby match up better than most. Great
keyboard and mouse, keys feel great, wireless n, fast boot,
upgradeable from 1GB to 2GB, user friendly ASUS Bios updater
interface, Microsoft works, lightweight. You must understand first
the context of my statement. I wanted a NETbook. Not a Laptop. I
didnt want an "ultimate" or Professional" version of ANYTHING
running on this NETbook. I wanted it to be lean and mean. I wanted
a small, powerful, convenient AND FAST NETbook for casual surfing
and email. If you wanted more, your in the wrong market. I didnt
buy this to play games, edit, video, watch TV or DVD's, etc. Like I
said I didn't want a Laptop. Windows Starter 32 bit is an excellent
match for a NETbook. Think of Windows 7 Starter as just that, the
place to start. I figured, if I NEED an "anytime upgrade" Ill get
it. At this point, having had used it for a week, I'm not changing
a thing. Less is more with a NETbook. Ill save upgrades for my
LAPtop and DESKtop. From when I push the power button to my first
opening click of Firefox = less than one minute. I removed some
preloaded crapware, i.e. ASUS whistles and bells and some preloaded
games. Added Norton Internet Security Netbook Edition, and bingo,
the perfect NETbook.

(More customer reviews)This is a great car
receiver for anyone who's interested in free HD radio. It's hard to
tell the difference between FM and HD radio FM, but the additional
channel on each band allows the user to listen to more music. The
huge improvement is listening to AM radio on HD. For Bay Area
residents, listen to KNPR 1050 Sports (too bad they don't broadcast
HD on its sister 680 AM band). The difference between 1050 AM and
1050 HD is truly amazing. The front AUX is a nice feature where you
can plug in your iPod or MP3 player with a mini-stereo cable. When
you play a MP3 CD, you can search quickly for the MP3 (by number)
you want to listen to by using the volume dial (better than using
the buttons).
The only problem is it takes nearly 5 seconds to synch from regular
radio to HD, and it's not a very stylist front panel. But it only
costs $130 or less... I got the unit installed by Best Buy so I
can't tell you about any installation issues (installing my
previous car receiver was a pain so I decided to pay for labor this
time).

Built-in HD Radio reception--it's free nationwide--with CD and MP3
playback and the convenience of a detachable faceplate: that's the
Dual XHD6420 receiver. The XHD6420 allows playback of your favorite
MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-R and CD- RW discs. Its powerful
on-board DSP processor decodes the compressed audio while
maintaining near-CD sound quality. An internal SRAM buffer provides
ESP (ElectronicSkip Protection) to virtually eliminate skipping and
allows alphanumeric or direct track search--even while a song is
currently playing.
1-DIN HD Radio Receiver The XHD6420 features a 1.0 DIN chassis with
an anti-theft detachable face. A black/white dot matrix display and
rotary encoder control make navigating the device a snap.
HD Radio Tuner With the XHD6420's built-in HD Radio tuner, you'll
enjoy static-free, digital-quality sound over the airwaves. Both
HD2 and HD3 FM multicast channels are supported, and broadcasted
info like station name, artist and song title on HD Radio channels
is displayed. Store your favorite HD stations among the standard 18
FM and 12 AM presets. Enjoy a new standard of radio with no
subscription fees.
AM/FM Tuner In with the new, but not necessarily out with the old.
Tune into your favorite non-HD AM and FM stations, and save up to
30 station presets (18 FM/12 AM). Run Auto Station Store when in a
new area to add the strongest signals, and easily scan through your
presets.
CD/MP3/WMA Playback Enjoy your favorite CDs and CD-R/RWs with all
the standard CD controls (random/repeat/intro/etc.), or go big and
burn a MP3/WMA encoded CD-R/RW for hours of music and display of
ID3 Tag info.
Convenience Is Key Dual threw in some features that'll make you
love the XHD6420. A programmable turn-on volume keeps you from
blowing your ears out when you head to work in the morning--unless
that's what you need to wake up. Keyless CD eject means you can
grab that CD on your way out without turning on the vehicle. You

(More customer reviews)The Polaroid PoGo
is a novel gift idea, with limitations. For scrapbooking
enthusiasts and kids of all ages, this would be a fun toy. Be aware
that pricing on this item is all over the map, and this bundle is
overpriced!
My impressions...
The Pro's:
+This is a CUTE, little printer! Kids, teens and young adults will
love it.
+The Polaroid Zink media 40 Pack Photo Paper for Polaroid Pogo
Cameras and Printers that is used by the Polaroid PoGo Instant
Digital Mobile Printer (Black) comes in one size: 2x3" and loads
easily into the device. NOTE: The Zink Smart Sheet (blue) must be
loaded with the paper to allow the printer to work. The photos have
a peel away back that allows the photos to be easily glued to any
applicable surface, making them great for scrapbooking use.
+This device does not use ink, thus there are no cartridges to
replace, and the photos come out of the printer 'dry', so no need
to wait to touch them.
+The size of this printer makes it ultra portable. About 4x6" and
1" thick... maybe 2 pounds?
The Cons:
-The print quality is 'fair', but not good. Of course the source
has something to do with it. Uploaded photos from my camera phone
were grainy, but they were also low resolution images. Photos
printed from my Canon camera were much sharper, but all suffered
from a bit of washout with poor color saturation especially
regarding the blue hues. If you remember the instant Polaroid
cameras, you'll not be surprised, however you will wish for better.
Again, no ink technology may just have this as a limitation, and
perhaps the next generation of this type of printer will be
better?
-The media (photo) size is limited to 2x3". No other sizes are
available and none would fit in this printer. The size is akin to
your driver's license or a credit card, so don't expect to be
framing these photos! The media is also fairly expensive; $10 or so
for 30 prints.
-Bluetooth connectivity was a bit of a problem. While my Nokia 5300
XpressMusic Black Phone (T-Mobile, Phone Only, No Service) was
listed on the Polaroid website as being compatible for the purposes
of transferring files via bluetooth, and the Nokia did recognize
the Polaroid PoGo after a search and putting in the passcode, I
could never print using the bluetooth connection. "No Connection"
errors occurred repeatedly, so I had to switch to the usb
connection (cord not included) to do a transfer from my phone to
the printer.
-Battery life is poor. The manual says charge for 2.5 hours prior
to use. I charged it for 8 hours and got 8 photos before it stopped
producing. I turned the PoGo on and off, and then was able to print
2 more. The printer had some juice left, but not much and I think
you'd be lucky to get 12-15 photos printed per charge.
-Print speed was not terrible, but slowed as the battery was used
up. The first two came out in 35-40 seconds with the final two
printing in over a minute each.
My Conclusion:
A good 'novelty' gift at the right price (under thirty dollars for
the PoGo), but due to the fair quality of the prints (lacking
brightness and accurate color quality) and the size limitations of
the ZINK photo paper (only in 2x3), these will never replace a true
photo printer. It's portability and lack of a need for ink are its
main selling points, with battery life, photo paper cost and size,
and print quality being negatives.

(More customer reviews)this is my 5th
vaio. last week i had the 211 which unfortunately for me i got the
defective wifi so had to send it back, spend extra $15 i shouldn't
have to spend but amazon customer service is the best always! so i
got this instead & i couldn't be more happier. the size, the
color (love the light green shade on the keyboard), the weight, and
even the little brown bag that comes with it. it could've been
perfect except for the large capacity battery. when it's just
sitting on my desk it doesn't bother me but when i put it in my
vaio case to take out, i really don't like the bulging battery. i
wish it is an option to buy a standard one & a large capacity.
i don't care much for the 8 hour battery life. this vaio reminds me
of my TR except with the TR it has the cdrom. the windows starter i
don't mind much, will upgrade eventually. also the memory. however,
i am going to get the standard battery asap if i could find one.
sony website doesn't have it anymore.
i heart my white vaio!

(More customer reviews)This review is
intended mainly for PC users who are new to the Mac. I'm not a huge
computer person, I've always had PCs, and frankly I've always
thought Macs were for hippies with ponytails. I pretty much have to
use a PC for my job functions, but over the last few years I've
been underwhelmed by both my home and work desktop (both dells) and
my home notebook (HP). I'm fed up with the windows BS - freezing
for no reason, slowing down for no reason, taking forever to
shutdown/startup, constantly nagging to update virus software etc.
I'm ok putting up with this for my work PC, but when it was time to
replace my home desktop I decided to take a look at the Mac. I'm
glad I did. I went with the 2.66ghz iMac with 24" monitor and
640gig HD.First Impressions: Coming from a Dell, the iMac was
pretty damn impressive right out of the box. The single box was
smaller than I expected, and Amazon packed it pretty good
(important because Amazon has dropped the ball on this before on
other items). The 24" screen is HUGE and looks great. Setup is a
breeze - it took much longer to disconnect my PC than to set this
up. Just plug it in, connect to router, connect keyboard and you
are ready. No, I don't miss the gigantic bundle of wires that used
to be next to my desk. I was connected and playing around with this
within 5 minutes of opening the box.
Pros: Beautiful screen, fast, easy to get set up and start using.
The display is impressive compared to a windows PC. No dealing with
virus software nagging for updates. The Time Machine feature makes
it extremely easy to back up. Great overall design w/ few wires and
nice touches like 2 USB inputs on the keyboard, camera built into
monitor etc.
Cons: No Bluray player option (why not?). No numeric pad on
keyboard (but I can't knock them for this since it is an option if
you order from Apple's website). Built in speakers in monitor are
pretty weak for music (I'll upgrade). I do think the "it's so
intuitive to use" hype of Macs is a bit overhyped today - I think
the user interface on a windows machine is just as intuitive,
albeit much less visually impressive.
Where to buy: I purchased this from Amazon and I'm glad I did, as I
saved about $150 vs. the Apple store. The downside to ordering on
Amazon is the apple store gives you a few choices (like a numeric
pad on the keyboard and wireless mouse) that Amazon does not. I
initially started to purchase this from the Apple website because I
wanted the numeric keypad, but as I was checking out I noticed they
slapped me with sales tax of about $100 - you normally don't pay
sales tax when you buy on the internet and the vendor is out of
state. When I saw that I immediately cancelled my order and
purchased from Amazon (plus Amazon was a bit cheaper to begin with
in addition to no sales tax). Amazon also shipped it to me faster
(though I have Amazon Prime), and did a good job packaging it. If
you go w/ the apple store online, pay attention to sales tax your
results may vary depending on your state.
Bottom line: I'm glad I got this. It's a great alternative for a
home computer which I mostly use for internet and media purposes (I
won't be installing excel on this machine!). It is a bit pricey
compared to a PC, but it's worth it if you appreciate the
impressive design, nice asthetics, great monitor, and less headache
vs. a PC.

Apple iMac MB417LL/A 20-Inch Desktop
Speedier than ever with the latest Intel dual-core processor, the
Apple iMac all-in-one desktop PC packs a complete, high-performance
computer into its all-in-one design, sporting a sleek, professional
aluminum enclosure that's joined precisely to a 20-inch glass cover
to create a virtually seamless front surface. It's powered by a
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which includes an amazingly
fast 1066 MHz front-side bus speed and super-sized 6 MB L2 cache.
This dual-core processor also provides an optimized, multithreaded
architecture for improved multitasking, video, and gaming
performance. And this iMac also gets a boost in video processing
power from the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics chip with
256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory.
The iMac also features an ultra-thin aluminum Apple Keyboard--with
dedicated keys for Mac features such as brightness, volume, eject,
play/pause, and Exposé--as well as the wired Mighty Mouse. It comes
pre-loaded with Apple's Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating
system--an operating system custom-designed for the advanced
technology inside--and it also comes with the iLife '09 suite of
applications, including iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband, and iTunes.
Hardware features include a 320 GB hard drive, 2 GB of RAM (with an
8 GB maximum capacity), 8x SuperDrive for burning movies to DVD and
music mixes to CD, integrated 802.11n wireless LAN, Gigabit
Ethernet wired networking, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity.
Power on a Pedestal With its anodized aluminum frame set upon a
sleek pedestal, the new iMac instantly transforms your workspace
from cluttered desktop to brilliant display podium. Because the
iMac's housing is made from a single sheet of aluminum, you won't
see any seams or screws except for a single compartment on the
bottom that provides easy access to the memory slots. The glossy
widescreen 20-inch glass display makes photos and movies come alive
with rich color. And the built-in iSight camera and microphone are
integrated so neatly you barely notice they're there. Aside from
the design details, the iMac is also friendlier to the environment
with highly recyclable and durable materials including
scratch-resistant glass and professional grade aluminum.
With its elegant anodized aluminum enclosure, the new Apple
Keyboard looks equally at home in your living room or on your desk.
Just connect it to the USB port on your iMac and start enjoying the
crisp, responsive feel of its low-profile keys. This compact
keyboard also includes special function keys for Mac features such
as brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, Exposé, and more. Two USB
2.0 ports provide high-speed connectivity for your iPod, Mighty
Mouse, digital camera, and other USB-based electronic devices.
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Experience faster, more nimble
application performance and improved energy efficiency with this
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Its hafnium-infused
circuitry--which reduces electrical current leakage in
transistors--helps to reduce power consumption while delivering.
powerful processing speeds. This 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo processor is
aided by a 1066 front-side bus speed and a super-sized 6 MB L2
cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a
larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The
FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side
bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit
computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data
manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to
multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share
resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels
of performance since it uses fewer watts.
Hard Drive and Memory The 320 GB Serial-ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200
RPM) quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin
to FireWire and USB 2.0. The 2 GB of DDR3 RAM (two SO-DIMMs of 1
GB) have an industry leading 1066 MHz speed, and the RAM capacity
can be increased to 8 GB.
Graphics and Video The 20-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD
offers a resolution of 1680 by 1050 pixels. It has a brightness
rating of 290 cd/m2 (candela per square meter), a contrast ratio of
800:1, and a viewing angle of 160 degrees (both horizontal and
vertical). The NVIDIA GeForce 9400M shares 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM
with main memory. You'll notice the difference when you work with
high-resolution photos and high-definition video, where
graphics-intensive features in iPhoto and iMovie are smoother. And
3D game play--from Spore to Call of Duty--is faster and more
responsive.
This iMac also enables you to connect a second display in either
extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode. The Mini DisplayPort
port offers support for DVI, dual-link DVI, and VGA video
connections via an optional adapter.
Wired and Wireless Connectivity The iMac gives you plenty of room
to grow, accommodating as many as six peripherals at a time thanks
to its four USB 2.0 ports and the two USB 2.0 ports on the Apple
Keyboard. It also includes a single powered FireWire 800 port (one
of the fastest peripheral standards available)--enabling you to
quickly transfer content from compatible digital video cameras,
hard drives, and other high-speed devices.
Share files around your house with built-in 10/100/1000BASE-T
Ethernet as well as the next-generation high-speed wireless 802.11n
technology, which is integrated into the latest Apple Airport
Extreme Base Station. The iMac is also Wi-Fi Certified to work with
base stations and routers that use industry-standard 802.11a,
802.11b, or 802.11g wireless technologies.
The integrated Bluetooth wireless connectivity--version 2.1 +
Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)--allows you to use a wireless keyboard or
mouse, and synchronize peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs.
Enjoy high-quality sound on almost any speaker system with
double-duty analog/digital audio. Record digital and analog sources
through audio line in, perfect for your latest podcast in
GarageBand.
SuperDrive Integrated neatly into the iMac is a slot-loading
SuperDrive that lets you play and burn your own CDs and
DVDs--including double-layer DVDs. And there's no disc tray--just
slide the disc right in. It offers the following speeds:
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x

The Greenest iMac Yet The energy-efficient hardware components in
the iMac work hand in hand with Mac OS X to create a system that
can dynamically adjust power consumption to reduce the energy used
overall. The iMac uses an advanced power management system
leveraged from the technology that makes the most of battery life
in Apple's MacBook family. To reduce energy consumption, the iMac
hard drive spins down automatically when inactive, and it also
decides which processor--CPU or GPU--is best suited to perform a
task efficiently. That means when iMac is idle, it's using as
little power as possible.
Apple engineers have worked hard to eliminate many of the toxins
that are a common part of desktop computer manufacturing, such as
choosing arsenic-free display glass for iMac. They have also
removed brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride
(PVC) from circuit boards, internal cables, connectors, insulators,
adhesives, and more. And the entire iMac computer is integrated
into an enclosure made from a single, solid piece of recyclable
aluminum, while the display is made of recyclable glass.
The Mac mini meets the stringent low power requirements set by the
EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR certification. In addition, Mac mini
meets the latest efficiency requirements of ENERGY STAR Version 5.0
Specification for Computers before its July 2009 effective date. It
has also earned the highest rating of EPEAT Gold. The Electronic
Product Environmental Assessment Tool, or EPEAT, evaluates the
environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is,
how much energy it uses, and how it's designed and
manufactured.
