from Waterstone's in the UK. It contains postcards with very short
stories (some illustrated) on the front, suitable for mailing
should you choose to pull them out. It was done as a fund raiser
for two charities, Dyslexia Action and English PEN.
Included are original, new stories from best selling authors such
as JK Rowling and Neil Gaiman (and many more), and also winners
from Waterstone customers and booksellers.
The stories vary from funny to sad - it was hard to pick a favorite
although Lisa Appignanesi's effort about a woman who got what she
thought she wanted in love would probably be it if forced. My sole
complaint on this is that some of the handwriting is hard to read.
I guess it makes me feel better about my own penmanship - at least
I have one thing in common with some incredible authors.
Enjoyable to read and for a good cause, this collection of short
stories is well recommended.

already aware of the Charlton Catalogues--as far as I know, they
are the only current price reference guides. It is black and white,
with 32 pages of color inserts of Bunnykins figures. The following
is listed for each figure: photo of figure, photo of base, name,
number, designer, height, color, dates issued, versions, quantity
made if a limited edition, series (if applicable), varieties, and
prices for each version in US, Canadian and Australian dollars, and
British pounds. (I generally find that figures will sell on eBay
for 25-50% of the book value, though rarer figures can be
higher).
This paticular guide features figures produced through 2005
(copyright is 2006) in the following Royal Doulton lines:
- Bunnykins Tableware
- Bunnykins Figurines (porcelein and resin)
- Alice in Wonderland
- Brambly Hedge
- Frosty Family
- Harry Potter
- Noddy
- Nursery Rhyme Collection
- Old Bear and Friends
- Paddington Bear
- Rupert Bear
- St. Tiggywinkles
- Snowman Gift Collection
- Thelwell
- Wind in the Willows
- Wizard of Oz
- Disney Characters (101 Dalmations, Cinderella, Disney Princess
Collection, Disney Showcase Collection, Disney Villains, Fantasia
2000, Film Collection, Mickey Mouse Collection, Sleeping Beauty,
Snow White, and Winnie the Pooh)
- Advertising Characters (figures dating from 1999, in limited
editions of 2,000)

Royal Doulton Collectables:
A Charlton Standard Catalogue, Fourth Edition
The 4th edition of Royal Doulton Collectables will be released
January 21st, 2006. The name change (formerly Royal Doulton
Bunnykins) was made by the Charlton Press's desire not to cross
brands. With the Beswick brand now having new owners we thought it
best to keep the Royal Doulton and Beswick catalogues separate. In
the new Royal Doulton Collectables catalogue are:Tableware: In the
year and a half since the third edition of Royal Doulton Bunnykins
was released many interesting discoveries have occurred in the
tableware collectables field.Thirty-six new shape/pattern
combinations have been added to the pricing tables and twenty new
pattern combinations have been added to the listings, several in
the "rare" pattern category. Most notable in the shape/pattern
combination is the discovery of a fine white china Rex Mug, large
size, combining Proposal (HW11) with Pulling on Trousers (HW2), and
a Beaker, large size, with the Artist (HW1) design. In pattern
combinations two of the more interesting finds are Carving the
Chicken (LFc) / Medicine Time (SF1) and Wedding (LFd) / Lambeth
Walk, First Version (HW16).Charles Noke's Bunnykins Teapot (D6010)
rose to new highs and now catalogues at $2,000. +.Bunnykins Banks:
Finally, the Grey Rabbit has been sighted, however, the rabbit
itself is not grey, but his jacket and hat are. The Royal Doulton
pattern book states a grey colourway, and it was assumed the colour
referred to the rabbit. We now have a grey-blue coated rabbit, and
a green coated rabbit in two sizes, with mould variations in the
two sizes. The grey-blue coated rabbit or First Version, carries
the Tug of War backstamp.Figures: The early earthenware issues of
1939-1940 weakened a little in pricing as on-line auctions brought
more pieces to market. Billy and Mother Bunnykins are the two
pieces which surface more frequently. The modern series of
Bunnykins, 1972-2005, again came under pressure from the weight of
the on-line auctions. The tremendous number of figures changing
hands in 2004-2005 leads us to believe that the supply is moving
into strong collecting hands, and while prices are trending
slightly lower, the curve is starting to level out. This is always
a very helpful move with any collectable for the lower price on new
issues expands the collector market.Fifty-five new DB numbered
figures have been added to the 4th edition. While this is a fairly
large number to add to the range, the MSRP fell due to the move of
the production of these figures to China, and from what we can see,
with no loss in quality. Certainly the body is lighter, but this is
simply from a difference in slip makeup. A real positive is that
the lower price will allow for a wider distribution of the
Bunnykins figures into the market place.Another interesting
addition to the DB range are two sets of Bunnykins Christmas Tree
ornaments (DB342 to DB349), each set containing four pieces. The
last Christmas Tree ornament (DB-62) Santa Bunnykins now sells for
over $500.Storybook and Cartoon Characters: Ten models have been
added to the Rupert Bear series, and a new series Frosty Family,
with six figurines in the series, has been included. In the Disney
Section thirteen models have been added to the Winnie the Pooh
series, and there two new series Cinderella and a new Disney
Princess Collection.

(More customer

calling it the "new Harry Potter". What a joke. The only comparison
would be in the storyline, which is similar, but there it ends. The
book is appallingly badly written, to the extent of being almost
unreadable. I cannot tell you how the story develops, because I
never made it beyond the third chapter. I had always thought that
it was difficult to get a book published, but if this is the
required standard then your average ten-year-old could do it. Take
my advice, save your money!

childhood is a creation of society and today it is the corporations
who are constructing childhood.Topics examined include Disney
movies,"educational" television,Beavis and Butthead,video
games, television wrestling, Barbie, and Macdonald's.Children are
shamelessly being exploited for profit with no consideration for
their welfare.Graphic violence and sexism is promoted in many video
games. The writers want to expose the hypocrisy and exploitation of
the corporations who have taken over the minds of
children.Macdonald's promotes a family friendly image, yet
employees have to put the company well ahead of family
interests.Never have a generation of children been subject to such
intense exploitation, as this book shows. The writers hope that more
parents and teachers question what is being done to the kids.

Kinderculture: The Corporate
Construction Of Childhood (The Edge, Critical Studies in
Educational Theory)
For corporate America, childrenand their parents’ moneyare one of
the most targeted groups in our consumer society. There are TV
shows, movies, video games, toys, books, and restaurants that are
specifically directed at childrenall of which has produced a
kinderculture” run by marketing and advertising executives.
Through a series of entertaining and insightful essays,
Kinderculture: The Corporate Construction of Childhood explores
some of the icons that shape the values and consciousness of
children, from Beavis and Butt-Head to Barney, from Disney movies
to Nintendo.Contributors drawn from the fields of education,
sociology, and popular culture analyze the profound effects and the
pervasive influence of these corporate productions in a style
parents, educators, and general readers will welcome. Arguing that
the experience of childhood has been, with or without our consent,
reshaped into something that is prefabricated, Shirley Steinberg
and Joe Kincheloe bring home to readers the impact our marketing
blitz” culture has on our childrenand on our beliefs about
childhood.

into playing the saxophone and this was one of the first music
purchases I bought for it. The music is overall pretty simple. It
comes with 16 songs, as it has listed. The great bonus for me is
the CD that comes along with the book. The CD has 33 tracks on
it...a warm-up track to start with, and then 2 tracks for each
song. The first track of each song is an orchestra playing and you
can play along with them. The second track is that same orchestra,
only without any saxophone. Essentially you become the saxophonist
in the orchestra.
The big plus for me was learning some songs from a major movie that
pretty much everyone has seen. When I play these songs (with or
without the CD), it's fun to actually have the person listening to
me go, "Oh! I know that song!". Definitely recommend.

story revolves around three lines that are friends and the language
is amazing. Mem Fox is a wonderfully creative author.
A fellow teacher shared this book with me. She fell in love with it
at the Florida Reading Association conference last month and just
had to buy it. We are studying intersecting lines, parallel lines
and perpindicular lines in my fifth grade classroom. I thought this
would be a fun book to read to the class so that we could discuss
different types of lines.
After I read the story to my class we listed all of the verbs in
the story and believe me, they are original! I don't want to spoil
it for you by directly quoting from the book. We also talked about
being different, of being true to yourself and not being afraid to
think outside of the box. These were univesal themes the books
touched on as well.
I recommend this book, you can certainly use it to teach "across
the curriculum."

(More customer

Artificial Intelligence at Carnegie Mellon, it was made known to us
first-year students that an unofficial but necessary part of our
education was to locate and read a copy of an obscure
science-fiction novella called *True Names*. Since you couldn't
find it in bookstores, older grad students and professors would
directly mail order sets of ten and set up informal lending
libraries -- you would go, for example, to Hans Moravec's office,
and sign one out from a little cardboard box over in the corner of
his office. This was 1983 -- the Internet was a toy reserved for
American academics, "virtual reality" was not a popular topic, and
the term "cyberpunk" had not been coined. One by one, we all
tracked down copies, and all had the tops of our heads blown off by
Vinge's incredible book.
*True Names* remains to this day one of the four or five most
seminal science-fiction novels ever written, just in terms of the
ideas it presents, and the world it paints. It laid out the ideas
that have been subsequently worked over so successfully by William
Gibson and Neal Stephenson. *And* it's well written. *And* it's
fun.
In my grad student days, we loved to sit around and discuss the
implications of Vernor's ideas. Sixteen years later, I do research
at MIT, and it's still fun to sit around and talk about how
Vernor's ideas are coming to be.
(Amazingly enough, Vinge has done this not once, but twice:
*Marooned in Realtime* contains ideas even more interesting than
*True Names* -- all in the setting of a murder mystery that takes
place 50 million years in the future.)
Vinge has subsequently written other, very popular and enjoyable
books, such as *A Fire Upon the Deep* and his just-published *A
Deepness in the Sky*. However, it's always been very frustrating to
me that *True Names* has been essentially impossible to find. It's
always out of print, and you have to know one of the elect who
snapped up copies back when it was marginally possible -- and these
copies are now jealously guarded. I won't let people read mine
outside of my home. (The same goes for *Marooned in Realtime* --
seminal work; out of print.)
So I am really, really delighted that *True Names* is now back in
print. I note that it is now fashionable to write books
"explaining" the Net and the near-term future of our society to the
layman -- books such as Negroponte's *Being Digital,* Gate's *The
Road Ahead*, or Dertouzos' *What Will Be*. These books are a waste
of time. If you would like to explore the implications and likely
future of the computer revolution, I would recommend three novels,
instead: *True Names* (Vernor Vinge), *Snowcrash* (Neal
Stephenson), and *Neuromancer* (William Gibson).
Vinge and Stephenson are not only excellent writers, they are
trained, competent computer scientists. *Neuromancer* is the
best-written of the three; *Snowcrash* is the funniest and hippest;
*True Names* -- well, *True Names* is the source.

(More customer

Rings Instrumental Solos for flute.
I have been playing flute for about two years now after taking
music classes both inside school and outside for additional advice.
I was able to master this beautiful instrument in no time. And I
hope to keep up my talent for it.
Now, the features you will expect of this book are:
- 12 featured pieces from each of the three films. These are "The
Prophecy", "in Dreams", "Concerning Hobbits", "Many Meetings", "The
Black Rider", "Gollum's Song", "Rohan", "Even Star", "Forth
Eorlingas", "Into the West", "Steward of Gondor", and the great
"Minas Tirith".
- Each piece ranges from at least one page to two; however repeats,
rests, and Codas may make the piece longer.
- The book contains full sized pictures of screenshots from the
movie.
- A level of playing that is challenging enough for a person of
nearly any level.
- Well organized pieces that are easy to understand and read.
- A flute fingering chart at the back to make sure you are able to
look up every note.
- A wonderful CD to listen to with full orchestral backup or to
play along with. In my case, the demos on my CD feature a
professional flutist who plays each piece. When you wish to know
the tempo and speed of each piece, this really improves the
experience. In fact, the CD is amazing enough to be sold as a sound
track for the films by itself.
- This book is available for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax,
Trumpet, Horn in F, and Trombone. This means that if any concert
bands are interested in playing familiar Lord of the Rings music,
the pieces will always be in key for each instrument.
In my opinion, this amazing book has completely brought me on to a
new level of playing. If any of you are musicians, reading this,
you know the feeling you get when you create such a soul-full,
emotional piece of music that your mind and audience is touched by
every note that weave themselves through each melody? This is what
I felt during getting to know each piece in this book.
Howard Shore, this music is brilliant! Thank you to you and your
full orchestra and team to putting this together to give musicians
wonderful music to play from an inspiring trilogy of films!
