Factory-Reconditioned Bosch PS10-2-RT Litheon 10.8-Volt Lithium-Ion I-Driver Kit Review

Title says it all. This thing is great. Good power, fast charging battery, fits into tight spaces, and despite what it looks like -- it is very comfortable to hold and operate. The articulating head is very easy to get into odd places, and the power is very easy to control.
It drills holes for screws very well (you need hex shank drill bits as there is no chuck). My only complaint is that it did not come with more bits (only one philips and one flat).
An oddity that took a second to "get" -- the clutch is electronic. When the torque is exceeded, the drill/screwdriver simply stops. No clicking or impact action. At first I thought I stalled it, but apparently that is normal operation. Now that I'm used to it it's fine.
This is now the first (and sometimes only) tool I reach for in the shop for any of my screwing/drilling/driving needs. Of course, I keep the other ones around for drilling bigger holes or turning the paddle mixer.
I definitely recommend this.

I bought this product for planting bulbs, and it really speeds things up! It does drain the battery on my cordless drill very quickly though. We use (abuse) the roto-driller to help with our cement like soil . Break it up with roto-driller then dig! A good product.

Makita LXT400 18-Volt LXT Lithium Ion 4-Piece Combo Kit Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(This is an amendment of my earlier review, based on some feedback from the discussion posts. Thanks M. Black and Stevie Q for your comments. I've also had the kit for 2 years now, which has raised some durability issues.)
My Dewalt cordless drill had served me well, but the batteries were getting weak, and I thought it time to step up to a new technology. There were several choices out there: Panasonic's superb, long-life drills, Hitachi's cool-looking powerhouse, and Milwaukee's 28 v lithium ion kit. Which is the best choice?
I almost bought the Panasonic, which was a great value for the drill alone, certainly from appearances a better buy than the Makita. But I thought I could use the extra tools in the kit. Ultimately, I went for the kit, and I'm glad I did. Put me in the category of those who never had that much use for battery powered tools (other than a drill) because of my perception that they had limited power. I always wanted the biggest, the best. The Makita lithium ion combo kit changed my perception.
First, the drill. That 560 in-lbs of torque is more than enough. It compares favorably to Milwaukee 28 v.'s 600 ft-lbs, and weighs less, only 5.2 lbs. The drill has 3 speed settings, and within each setting you can also vary the speed by pulling the trigger less or more. You have to wonder how they crammed all of that power in such a light tool!
Well, it's not just a drill. Flip the top switch, and it's a hammer drill. I had never used a hammer drill before, always having forced those concrete bits using a regular drill, which worked okay. But as a hammer drill, this Makita tore right through tiles and concrete so fast I had to slow down--deep, fine holes without overheating the bit, and fast. What a pleasure.
All of the Makita tools in this kit have a light that comes on when you start to work. Touch the trigger, and even before the tool starts spinning, your work area is illuminated. If you are working in an area where a lot of shadows are cast, this is a really nice feature. Unlike the Hitachi which also has a light, this light runs right off of your rechargeable battery.
Okay, it was a great drill--for a while. But then I had some problems wabout warranty-expiration time. The drill would not operate at lower speeds. So being a fixer-type, I took mine apart, and found some problem with a pin on a plastic sleeve that is used to change between the 3 speed levels. It was a pretty incredible look inside; I mean lots of gears, and I understood what 4-pole meant--but frankly, the pin in the plastic sleeve was the Achille's heel. So since I was out of warranty, I just bought a drill without a battery for about $80. And it worked really well--for about a year, when the same problem cropped up AGAIN! Sorry Makita, this is a weakness. My Dewalt XRP drill, by contrast, is 10 years old and still runs like thunder.
Now, the circular saw. Initially, I have to say I was impressed. The saw was quite a performer. Though slower than a corded saw, I could rip through several 8-ft pieces of hardwood before draining the battery. The real beauty of the saw is in the quality of cut and control. Whether a cross-cut or a rip, the cut is really smooth, with no wood burns. And the blade guard never gets stuck, even when I'm shaving off the finest amount on an edge. It is so well balanced that I can control it with my left and alone (and I am right-handed). Now, compare this to my monster Skilsaw worm drive. Powerful, yes, but difficult to control, with a lurch when you start it up. Both hands are absolutely necessary. On trimming edges, the blade guard often gets stuck (and this is common on almost every other corded circular saw I have used). So, you have to use your hand to slide up the blade guard while holding the monster with the other, which is difficult. Because it is so powerful and hard to balance, wood burns are common. Keeping it flat on the wood while shaving off the edge is next to impossible. I get much better quality cuts with this Makita. A further advantage is the dust reduction. The Makita, first of all, has a finer kerf blade, 1/16" I think. So, dust is reduced proportionately. Most of the dust exits through a cleverly designed hole in the blade guard in a neat little pile next to the cut, instead of blowing it all over me and the workshop. The texture of the dust is different also; it's not fine dust that blows all over the place, but slightly coarse, so it stays put. Now I won't exactly say that I exit the shop dust-free. But I will say, there's a lot less dust on me, and shop clean-up is a lot easier. And unlike the Panasonic cordless saw, the Makita takes standard arbor diameter blades which you can pick up cheap almost anywhere.
But now, I have some second thoughts about the circular saw. Yes, it can cut a lot, but the rapid discharge can over-heat both the tool and the battery. After one afternoon of a couple of hours of intensive cutting, one of my batteries overheated and was shot--that is, permanently unrechargeable. Not long after that, the saw itself stopped working. When I opened it up, I found a meltdown next to one of the brushes. Sorry--this should not be happening, either to the battery or to the saw. My opinion based on this experience is that the saw is good for 10-15 minutes of moderate load at a time. Beyond that, I would go to a corded circular; otherwise, you can risk ruining both battery and saw. With that caveat, I still love the saw for all of its other attributes.
Finally, the impact driver. What's this? I'd never used one before. Well, it is extremely light to begin with, just over 3 lbs, and puts out 1280 in-lbs of torque, which is over twice that of the drill. By using short bursts of power, it knocks in bolts and heavy duty screws with a lot more ease than your drill, without torquing your arm off. In fact, you hardly feel any torque at all. It's not for every screw, because it has no clutch, so it will break off screws and bolts that can't handle the 1280 in-lbs. Reversable too, so great for changing tires. I've driven #12 screws into 2" of hardwood without so much as a starter hole. It's the tool to use when a lot of torque is required.
By comparison, the Milwaukee 28 lithium ion impact driver delivers 600 in-lbs of torque. At first, I was very impressed by the extra power of the Makita. But in the end, I found that the extra torque actually ended up breaking a lot of bolts and screws. So in the end, I find myself using the drill instead of the impact driver. Overall, I actually wish that the Makita driver had LESS torque, closer to the Milwaukee. Comparing weight, Milwaukee's impact driver weighs over 8 lbs vs. 3.3 lbs for Makita's impact driver and 5.2 lbs for Makita's drill. The hammer drill and this impact drill combined will pretty much takes care of all of my drilling and screwing needs.
The set also comes with a light, which will stand up anywhere and which you can use to illuminate your work area. With all 3 tools providing their own light, I've never used it in the shop. But as a flashlight it's great-lightweight, and 5 hours of run-time on a charge, and the xenon bulb is very bright. I am currently living in Uganda, where we have power outages every other day. So this light gets a lot of use. The fact that I never have to buy batteries becomes a real plus. You can stand it upright and point it at a white ceiling and it will illuminate the entire room. If you need a broad area lit up for some reason, it does quite a good job. The head is adjustable, so you can point it perpendicularly or at a 135 degree angle as well.
I also got the reciprocating saw as a free offer with this purchase. I like it. It seems less prone to overloading than the circular saw, and has a very solid and comfortable feel. I've used it extensively to cut galvanized pipe and half-inch hardened steel bolts. It has proven reliable and easy to control, provided my pieces are well clamped.
Milwaukee has a 28 v lithium-ion set. Milwaukee's 28 v are good if you are doing exceptionally heavy work, and you will get more done on those massive 28 v batteries. But I can't imagine doing much more than cutting through thick, dense tropical hardwoods, which my Makita does just fine. And the Makita tools weigh less-a LOT less. Makita's battery charge time is 45 minutes vs. Milwaukee's 60 minutes. Using the two batteries, I have never been lacking for power between charges. Since the Makita gives me more than enough power, it was a good choice for me. Recently I note that Milwaukee is selling a lot of reconditioned lithium ion equipment and not the new equipment. Maybe there were some bugs to be worked out. I've been working the Makita tools daily for about 4 months now with no problems.
What about those lithium ion batteries? All indications are that they are supposed to take a lot more recharges than even NiMH, and the weight savings contribute to the ergonomic beauty of this whole set. There is a great discussion at the Tool Barn website on this set, including the advantages/disadvantages of lithium ion batteries, and it is worth a read. Apparently, some believe that they can lose amp-hours over time, even if not in use. Makita denies this. Their charger is fan-cooled to control the effects of overheating on battery life, and it charges them up full in 45 minutes, which I can verify. The 3 amp-hours will go a long, long way on everything but the circular saw.
I've used my batteries for 2 years now. One burned out due to my circular saw; the other is still going strong, and had to do double-duty for a while, until I got a replacement for the one fried one. So, I think I am confident in my belief that Makita's lithium-ion claims are probably true.
In conclusion--if you want a set that is...Read more›

CMT 537.350.31 Forstner Bit 35mm Cutting Diameter, 10mm Shank Review

I like these bits. They are inexpensive (try pricing top-of-the-line US bits), sharp, and hold an edge. My understanding is that CMT starts with Chinese made bits of good quality, high-speed steel and re-sharpens and finishes them to their specs. The result is a better than average bit for very little money. Degrease them before use, as the heavy coating will make the bit spin in a chuck if you don't.

Porter-Cable 7556 1/2-Inch Right Angle Drill Kit Review

Better not pass up the chance to buy one of these! PorterCable does not make them anymore, and that is a shame because these are virtual boring machines! I have had mine since 2001, and it is so strong, you could drill a water well with it. Milwaukee may have the market for right angle drills, but this PorterCable version has them beat. I have used mine with extensions to make holes for 4 inch plumbing inside walls, down below floor level. Gotta hang on tight and not go too fast with the big hole saws, or it will catch and twist your arm. The 330 RPM with variable speed is great for these jobs. Milwaukee drills are faster, but this one is stronger ! Go PorterCable!

Panasonic EY7840LN2S 14.4-Volt Li-ion Rotary Hammer Kit Review

PanasonicEY7840LN2S14.4-VoltLi-ionRotaryHammerKit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this tool after I was unable to find any reviews about it, but figured that I could use the batteries and charger for my impact driver and drill even if the rotary hammer didn't live up to my hopes.
After 2 days of use, I am pretty happy with it. I think that it will drill about 80 or so 5/32" tapcon holes in hollow block, or around 40 5/32" x 2 1/2" holes in concrete per battery. Obviously, compared to a corded SDS drill, the panasonic is no match, but for small projects, it works great.
I have been hanging cabinets on block walls and find the relatively light weight tool to be comfortable to work with.
I have yet to use the supplied shoulder strap because its not extremely easy to attach and remove.
The RPM's on this tool are a little low for must drilling applications. I just don't have the time to wait and would rather use my cordless drill or impact instead.
It includes an adapter to use 1/4" quick connect bits for drilling and driving. Its a nice addition, but one that I don't think I will use very much.
Just for fun, I threw in a 1/2" x 4" bit and had the buried in a concrete slab in under 15 seconds with no problems.
Overall, I am happy with my purchase. If I didn't need the batteries, I would have looked into buying the larger Panasonic rotary hammer drill. Since I think that this tool will only see use about 20% of the year, I'll give the batteries a workout in the drill and impact, and maybe a cordless jigsaw some day.

Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill Review

Bosch1361818VoltBruteToughHammerdrill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned one of these for about 2.5 years and so far no serious complaints as this has been a consistently reliable tool. It has more than justified its high price with its solid performance--for most small masonry applications this drill has proven itself more than adequate. I have been in situations where I have had to really abuse this tool--drilling 1/2" holes in aged cement and while this tool couldn't keep up like a corded it still hasn't died. Oh, and these 18v batteries will work in my 24v Bosch tools, but their 24v batteries will not work in this 18v drill.
The batteries leave something to be desired and the weight still feels excessive to me for 18v--I purchased the 18v instead of an 24v SDS because I don't have masonry applications that often and would like a full-size drill that could handle the infrequent times when I would have to drill brick or concrete, but still be light enough for general use. That said, I have the 24v jigsaw and circular saw from Bosch, and I'm not sure that it wouldn't have been a better idea for me to get the 24v hammerdrill for battery interchangeability. The 18v is still pretty heavy--the carabiner clip on the bottom of the drill's handle seems like a great idea until you actually try to use it and then find it pulling your pants down around your ankles. The drill feels solid and well-made--although on mine the clutch's inked on numbers as well as the BOSCH name painted in red on the side of the motor have basically scratched off entirely. The included side handle is nice and the case is surprisingly decent.
I'm generally happy with this purchase, but I'm not sure it is necessarily the best option out there. I have a Metabo 15.6v I like more for general use and for serious hammerdrills I wish I had probably went either with the 24v Bosch SDS or the comparable Hilti 24v, or even the 19.2v P/C's. If I was doing a lot of masonry drilling inevitably I would have to go with a corded anyway.

My Ni-Cad batteries for my Dewalt drill had given up the ghost. I needed some long lasting reliability and found this Ni-MH replacement. It was shipped promptly and packaged well. It is an exact fit in the drill although slightly taller and distinctly heavier. It does last an extremely long time and it charges in the charger that came with my drill. I'm very satisfied with this upgrade. My only complaint is that the battery packs came with no use and care instructions. I had to search on-line to find some guidance from the hobbyist sites for model airplanes and RC cars.

These tools are awesome. Forget about the power cord, and it is true that the batteries are very light especially the slim pack. The hammer/drill should be lighter. It is very heavy and clumsy but you have phantastic control over speed from very slow to top speed which quite often is very important, e.g. when extracting frozen screws. The saw is solid and has incedible cutting power. It also uses the standard saw size 6 1/2 inch. The flash light is could use a higher wattage bulb.

This is a simple to use, highly effective battery charger. It is far superior to the original charger that came with the Makita drill I purchased over 11 years ago. I thought that my old Makita NiCad stick batteries could no longer hold a charge after so many years of great service. To my surprise, they are once again holding a full charge after being inserted into this replacement Makita charger. Wow. Talk about a small miracle! I'll be able to enjoy my Makita drill for many years to come. Nice. I wish I had purchased this little marvel prior to buying a replacement set of Makita NiCads - oh well, now I have four batteries!
Bottom line: If you're considering a replacement battery charger for your Makita cordless device that uses stick style batteries, look no further. Highly recommeded.

The cordless rotary hammer is very powerful and effective. Its great advantage is that it is so light weight. Other cordless hammers are much heavier and do not eat faster into concrete.

Malco TS1 Turbo Shear 20 Gauge Capacity Sheet Metal Cutting Attachment for 3/8-Inch Drills Review

I purchased this to cut templates about the size of a dinner mat out of the sides of 18-wheeler trailers (1/8" aluminum). Given the other reviews cutting steel, I was expecting good things. However, my experience was mixed.
I found it could cut the aluminum quickly but only at one magical angle and with significant forward force applied. It was challenging to find/maintain the magic angle and supply sufficient forward force while standing on a ladder.
I noticed that air-powered shears have two cutting blades. With two blades, the torque applied to each edge of the cut is balanced. These single blade shears often left the edges stressed with waves and bending.
My 15.4V Panasonic drill worked but 18V might have been better.
All in all, it is very affordable and better than hand shears. I don't regret owning it, but it has limitations.

The Malco TurboShear convert your power drill to a power shears. To operate this time-saving tool, simply insert the TurboShear directly into any 3/8-inch chuck of a standard 1,200 RPM A/C or cordless drill. This rugged but inexpressive accessory cuts straight and to the left. It makes fast cuts in sheet metal and is capable of navigating tight curved patterns and squares in heavy 20-gauge galvanized steel. Blind cuts require only a 1/2-inch starting hole. Cutting applications include both ferrous and non-ferrous sheet metals, metal roofing/building panels, vinyl, steel mesh, duct work, even the thick metal of furnace jackets, equipment enclosures or automotive body panels. An offset design keeps both hands away from work surface. The long-wearing hardened jaws are also replaceable.

Ryobi 18V ONE+ Lithium Ion Impact Driver P232 (Tool only, battery and charger not included) Review

This is a competent little tool that does just what it is supposed to do. I bought it to drive screws, and man does it drive screws. They just melt into the wood. I already had a bunch of Ryobi 18v lithium tools, so this one fit right in. It's lighter than the drill, and much faster and more powerful at driving. I have driven about 1000 deck screws so far, and with much less hand fatigue than when using my Ryobi drill. I really like this little guy.
