Fight Club

Fight Club, summary and dialogues

What happens when an insomniac whose disease turns him into a ticking-time-bomb meets a slippery soap salesman? Lots of manic action. One of the principal outcomes is when they decide to give primal male aggression an outlet with hard-hitting (literally) new form of therapy. A statement about the condition of the world today, the concept gets popular and these underground “fight clubs” mushroom in towns across America. Good things never last though and an eccentric “fight club” member puts a spanner in the works, putting the characters on the path to the spine-tingling and exciting climax of the film.

In Fight Club, a young urban professional who works for a major car manufacturer is having trouble sleeping. In search of an outlet for his feelings, the young man goes from one support group to the other, though he does not have any of the problems that the support groups are hoping to cure. This is the only thing that helps him to sleep. It looks like he’s found a cure for his problem until he encounters a woman called Marla Singer who is going through the same rounds with the support groups he is attending. This reduces their effectiveness and he has a hard time sleeping again. He is on a downward spiral until he meets his antithesis, a soap manufacturer named Tyler Durden. He moved in with Tyler into a large dilapidated house in an abandoned part of town. One day the two start to beat each other up in a bar parking lot and this ends up becoming something of a nightly ritual between the two. Again the insomniac finds himself able to sleep.

But others who see the fight want to a be a part of it too. Realizing the need for such clubs, the two found a secret fight club. The fight club grows exponentially, popularity wise and scope wise. In the meantime, Marla too has the two men in a circle of some sorts which complicates things a little. And slowly, as with all things that grow to be bigger than those who founded them, the lives of the insomniac and soap maker get entangled in all kinds of things and spiral out of control.

Famous dialogues from the film include, “Welcome to Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club! Third rule of Fight Club: if someone yells “stop!”, goes limp, or taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule: only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule: one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule: the fights are bare knuckle. No shirt, no shoes, no weapons. Seventh rule: fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

How Edward Norton Got Into Acting

How Edward Norton got into acting

Contrary to rumor, Edward Norton did not attend the famed Yale Acting School. He did however attend the college as an undergrad from where he received a B.A. in history in 1991. He also took numerous theater and Japanese courses during that time. One to play it safe, in interviews Edward Norton has been heard to say that he took as many theater courses as he could without majoring in theater.
Following graduation, Edward Norton moved to Osaka, Japan. There he had a job consulting for his grandfather’s company, Enterprise Foundation. His grandfather is credited with inventing the modern shopping mall as well as furthering the cause of decent, affordable housing for low-income families, which was the project that was underway in Japan. Edward Norton was able to make it in Japan because he speaks some Japanese, which helped when he worked. But soon after, Edward Norton quit his desk job to pursue an acting career in New York. He had the full support of his grandfather in this.

While trying to break into the acting scene, Edward Norton worked as a waiter, a proofreader, and a director’s assistant. He also wanted to be a New York City cab driver, but this did not work out as he didn’t meet the license’s age requirement. Edward waited tables and struggled for about two years before luck came him way. He caught the attention of Edward Albee who happens to be one of the 20th century’s most well known playwrights. The project underway at the time was a new production of Fragment at the Signature Theater Company. Edward Norton was able to prove his mettle in one audition and got not just the role but a slot in Signature’s repertory company as well. Even now, though Norton is an extremely successful actor, the association with the Signature Theater Company continues as he is on its board of directors.
