Jake Gyllenhaal is the son of director Stephen Gyllenhaal and producer/screenwriter Naomi Foner. The family has film in their blood and even Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister Maggie Gyllenhaal is an actress. Born in 1980, Jake Gyllenhaal’s interesting looks can be attributed to his father’s partial Swedish heritage and his mother’s Ashkenazi Jewish heritage.
An early starter, Jake Gyllenhaal first appeared in a film at age eleven. He played Billy Crystal’s son in City Slickers (1991). Proof is an American drama film that was released in 2005. The film has been directed by John Madden and features a cast comprising Anthony Hopkins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Hope Davis. The screenplay was written by Rebecca Miller and is an adaptation of David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same title.
In ‘Proof’, Catherine played by Gwyneth Paltrow has been taking care her father who is a brilliant mathematician going by the name of Robety, played by Anthony Hopkins. Robert had lost his mind some years previously. When he passes away, a former student, Harold, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, checks his notebooks, hoping to make a discovery. Catherine is on edge and suspects that Harold has an ulterior motive and wants to take all the credit. In the meantime, Catherine’s sister, Claire played by Hope Davis, shows up from New York and begins to cast draw negative attention on Catherine’s mental state. Catherine turns to Harold in these troubled times and ends up getting into a relationship with him. As a mark of trust, Catherine shares the key to her father’s desk. When Harold goes through it he discovers a notebook in which a proof of an important theorem is written. Catherine says the work is hers but as the handwriting is the same as her fathers, people doubt the truth of this statement. Everyone involved starts to think that Catherine is crazy.
Themes in the movie include the subject of death and dying. Though the physical death of Robert is not shown in the film, he dies in many other ways such as career wise, sanity wise and sex wise as well. Proof also deals extensively with relationships.
In Proof, Gwyneth Paltrow plays Catherine, the protagonist while Anthony Hopkins plays Robert, Catherine’s father. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Harold “Hal” Dobbs, a former student of Robert’s and Catherine’s lover while Hope Davis plays Claire, Catherine’s sister.
