The Sad Story of Factory Girl
The 2006 American film Factory Girl portrays the tragic story of 1960s underground film star, socialite, and Andy Warhol’s Superstar Edie Sedgwick. The story is about Edie Sedgwick and how being in Andy Warhol’s life destroyed her.
The film opens with Edie Sedgwick played by Sienna Miller as a young heiress studying art in Cambridge, Massachusetts. When she shifts to New York City she meets Pop Art sensation and film-maker Andy Warhol played by Guy Pearce. Andy Warhol takes to her immediately and invites her to act in one of his underground movies. Soon Edie is hanging out at the Factory, Warhol’s studio. Here she meets and communes with a group of eccentrics, some of them who are into drugs. Edie’s position as a Warhol Superstar and successful fashion model put the spotlight on her.
Subsequently, Edie is introduced to a poet and singer Billy Quinn by her friend Sid from Cambridge. Edie senses that Andy does not like Billy and her efforts to keep her love affair with Billy a secret are unsuccessful. She even tries to get the two to get along but Andy is contemptuous of Billy. Billy tries to get Edie to leave with him, calling Andy a “bloodsucker” who will “kill” her. But when she does not leave, he takes his leave by kissing her forehead.
Edie’s life starts to go down the drain as her addiction to drugs gets deeper. Her relationship with Andy suffers and her modelling career too comes to a halt when she suffers burns after starting a fire from smoking in bed. She screams at Andy Warhol while he is at lunch with his friends, demanding to be paid, screaming abuse and accusing him of ruining her.
The rest of the film is about how Edie’s life is completely ruined by the hedonistic time she spent around Warhol. The life of the Factory Girl ends with her dying of an overdose.
