An inkjet is an inkjet is an inkjet, yes? In
fact, although the overwhelming majority of products from Brother,
Canon, HP and Lexmark, and also from Epson itself, use
pigment-based or dye-based water-soluble inks, unquestionably the
SX515W is actually a rare breed which relies upon resin-based inks,
in Epson's DURABrite umbrella. Actually, an umbrella is the last
thing these types of inks need, because their primary claim to fame
is they are able to generate water-resistant, smudge-proof,
anti-fade prints upon bog-standard plain paper.
Robustness of plain-paper prints is not the SX515W's sole selling
point, because it is also very well connected when it comes to a
printer featuring such a knockdown price. Along with de rigueur USB
2.0 as well as PictBridge ports, you'll find it offers full Wi-Fi
connectivity along with a blissfully swift and straightforward
setup process that is fully automated, besides needing you to enter
your current network password.
On top (literally) of a rapid 5760 x 1440dpi printer, you get a
capable 2400 x 2400dpi CIS (Contact Image Sensor) scanner, that is
partnered with a pragmatically designed control panel and 6.3cm
colour LCD screen. The net end result is straightforward stand
alone mono or colour photocopying, in addition to direct photograph
printing from the built-in CF, MMC, MS, SD, SDHC and xD memory card
readers.
The inclusion of CompactFlash compatibility is great to possess,
and a product which is absent with a lot of existing all-in-one
units including the Lexmark Interact S605.
It isn't all fantastic news nevertheless, because whilst the
four-ink system is entirely satisfactory for document printing,
photograph productivity coming from the SX515W is a lacklustre,
with constrained colour range, weak contrast plus a dull look even
though printing with glossy photo paper.
In a direct fight with our stop-watch, the Epson put in an
excellent turn of speed with regard to mono documents, outputting
A4 text pages within four seconds. It proved just a little tardier
with respect to mixed text and colour graphics, taking 28 seconds
per page. Photograph production was basically painfully slow,
taking a minute and six seconds for a 6 x 4-inch print in normal
quality mode, along with a nap-inducing six minutes and forty
seconds for a top-quality borderless A4 picture print. That is
almost three and a half times slower compared to the Canon iP4700
and five times slower than the Lexmark Interact S605.
The sole additional true snag we ran in to was when we did not use
the Epson for two weeks, the resin-based
Epson Stylus SX515W printer cartridges had a
horrible common practice of setting like glue in the print head
nozzles, requiring multiple cleaning cycles to unclog them.
Uncomplicated and also reliable, the SX515W is fantastic for
printing or photocopying documents with smudge-free perks but,
considering that so many of the latest inkjets deliver excellent
quality output with regard to pictures in addition to documents,
it's a bit of a one-trick pony.
