I've used every type of coffee maker around. I look for all stainless- that means NO plastic or aluminum contacting the water----this has been a great product for me--I love perked coffee. When I'm not using this I use a Cona glass vacuum maker--- I'm a purist about materials and coffee making. Presto has been the most reliable of all my electric percs. It's all stainless. This is a marvelous appliance because it is just so darn simple! I bought one to keep in my office at work for making tea, and it has worked out great!

There isn't even an on/off switch. Just put water in it, plug it in, and a red light goes off when it is ready to pour. Put a mug under the dispenser, push the lever, and there you go!

One reviewer said that it does not have a fill-to line, and so water can spill over. I don't see this as a problem. Just heat as much water as you need. I fill up my mug with hot water, pour the water into the appliance, and dispense the water when it is hot back into the mug. Oddly enough, I get out exactly the same amount as I put in! Don't try to heat more than 16 ounces at a time.

The Hot Shot does only one thing, but boy does it do it well! Easy to use, simple to clean, and attractive on the counter. Love having hot tea without fussing with heating water in the office microwave! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

This is one of my favorite small appliance products ever. I got one of these in the 1980s and it lasted me for years and years. I gave it away to charity and have searched for one since then ! I thought I'd get a new one and it would look 'new' therefore better. But it was still working perfectly when I gave it away. I only hope whoever got it, knew how to use it and likes it as much as I did ! I can't find another one now ! LOL
Anyway, it's been described in the other reviews but I'll add this: Its design is very simple. You plug it in, sit it on your counter top, lift the lid and pour in a couple mugfuls of water (there is a line to show you how much is two cups exactly).
You close the lid, and then you push down the button in front. The light goes on. When the light goes green (if memory serves; it's either that or goes off but either way it's sooo simple to figure out) the water is boiling hot. (By the way, if you are vision impaired -- you can hear the water boiling, and when the sound stops you know it is ready. It is a gentle soothing 'steam' sound). Now, you just put your mug or soup bowl underneath it (there is a stand/base, and the water tank is on top of that) and push the button down.
The hot water pours out of the water tank into the soup bowl or mug. It is that simple ! And it really does take two minutes. I've tried boiling water in a microwave; it does not get hot enough. This really does the trick. The water is boiling hot but not bubbling. I never hurt myself with the temperature of this water; you will want to keep small kids away from it though, like you would with any hot water. There is no latch on the lid, so if they pulled it down off the counter the water might come out and burn them.
But that isn't likely to happen, because the cord is short. Just push it back far on the counter top. Another safety feature is, it does shut itself off once the water is done boiling. When I ignored it, I would have to boil it again but that's good; I'd rather re boil it than have it totally scalding or simmering all day.
The best part is you can use Hot Shot for many things. I made instant mashed potatoes with it, and usually just tea or hot chocolate. It is the ideal appliance for anyone in a small living area such as a dorm or studio apartment. It is even good to have in one's bedroom if you share living quarters. You could have your morning coffee or tea before facing the roommates !
If there is a downside it is that it only boils water. You can't heat soup in it but then I like it that way ! I had a hot POT in college and never used it after the first time. I hated cleaning old soup out of there ! It's much easier and neater to just boil water in the Hot SHOT and use instant soup powder in a mug.
I had the Hot Shot for a long time and it never needed cleaning inside. But there is an easy to understand user's manual with it, that explains how to clean it out if calcium deposits do settle in from the water over the years. All in all I recommend this with the highest rating. It remains one of my all time favorite small appliances for its ease of use and for its simplicity ! I used it every day ! Also it does not take up much room on the counter top.

I had a Hot Shot for many years. I never had a problem with it, and we used ours for everything. Water for tea, coffee, cocoa, instant soups and oatmeal, and other hot drink mixes. The water boils so fast that the only time I use a kettle is if I am making a pot of tea. For a couple of cups of tea, filling the Hot Shot twice is still faster!
I did find that some mugs don't fit under the dispenser, and some mugs dribble when you pour into the compartment. Also, sometimes with a mix like cocoa, when you pour the water into the cup, the inside of the cup area gets dirty. However, I solved all these problems. I got a 2 cup glass measuring cup. It fits perfectly under the dispenser, pours with no drips into the water compartment, and will leave no mess behind. Simply measure the water you need, pour it into the dispenser, dispense the water back into the measuring cup, and pour it where needed. I leave the measuring cup in the Hot Shot when not in use.
I had my Hot Shot for seven years and it worked like new until I accidentally melted the cord. If I hadn't done that, I am sure it would still be working. My new one works fine, too, and I wasn't going to buy one until I quickly remembered how long the kettle took!

I have this Crock Pot but my crock insert is white instead of black. I bought this slow cooker probably in the late 1990s. I own three slow cookers (the Rival 3-1/2-quart oval and the Rival 6-quart), and this is the best one and the one I use the most. It is 2-1/2 quarts and is perfect for two people. It cooks the best out of all three of my slow cookers as it does not overcook the food as the other two will. I find that the cooking times listed in most slow cooker cookbooks are very accurate for this Crock Pot, but for my other two larger models, I must reduce the cooking time. I have never had overcooked food in this slow cooker. Everything has always cooked to perfection. Most recipes in slow cooker cookbooks are written for 6 to 8 servings. If I cut the recipes in half, they will fit perfectly in this Crock Pot and fill it 3/4 full. That is just enough food for my husband and me and will usually leave leftovers for one or two more meals for one person. This slow cooker also looks very nice as it is all white and matches my kitchen, so it is always out on the counter. I use it many times a week and I am very happy with it. Since it cooks at such a low temperature, whenever I cook meat, I use the high setting for the first hour and then reduce it to low and cook for one hour less than the stated recipe (since one hour on high is equal to two hours on low). Everything turns out perfectly this way. The potatoes and carrots are perfectly tender and have not cooked down to mush as has happened in my larger, more powerful Crock Pots.

I highly recommend this model if the size is big enough for you because it works the way slow cookers are supposed to work - cooking the food slowly and gently. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

, all of the liquid was gone. In another hour or two, it would have been burnt. Fortunately, adding more water did the trick and it was able to cook the oatmeal without further incident.

Basically, because of how quickly this pot heats up this is a good product only if you can check on it every three or four hours or so while cooking. Otherwise, purchase a larger model, especially one with a "keep warm" function. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

This is an identical replacement to a 10 year excellent product. The new one has a weak motor and after one month the motor "squeals" loudly when I try to use it. I would like the supplier to replace it with one they have tested to be good. (I wish I had saved my old one and just replaced the removable cutter which was worn out.) Bought this while trying to find an under-counter can openener that would tolerate overhangs. As other people have noted, the arm you lift up to insert the can comes off WAY too easily - they should have made it to where you have to rotate it counterclockwise another 90 degrees or so before it can be removed. Also, after just a few months' use it does not open cans anymore, even while holding the can to it and helping it rotate the can. This is a horrible product and I would definitely not buy again. My son gave me a high quality chef's knife a year ago. I kept the knife sharp using a sharpening steel. I had never used a high quality knife before and the difference was remarkable. It was a real improvement over all the knives I had ever used. I really enjoyed using it.

Then, after about 4 months, the knife suddenly got dull. No matter what I did I could not get it back to the way it was when it was new! I used 6 different sharpening gadgets including an oiled wet-stone, a powered work-shop knife sharpener, two traditional kitchen knife sharpeners and even a special diamond coated gadget from our local gourmet shop. They all got the knife sharp, as sharp as all my other knives, but it was no longer dramatically better than the cheap knives.

Based on the 5 star reviews, I decided to give the Presto 08800 Pro EverSharp Electric Knife Sharpener a try. After carefully following the instructions, the knife was restored to it's like-new scary sharpness on the first sharpening. It has stayed sharp for 2 weeks with much use.
We have since sharpened several other knives with similar high quality results.

Don't do what I did, instead buy this sharpener first! It is a great tool!

I read all the reviews before buying and just had to write my review (my first ever of any product). I have worked in kitchens in the past and prepare meals regularly. I am a cajun cook and we chop crazy amounts of onions, celery, garlic, bell peppers and everything else from the garden. I also have a catfish pond, and I need a very sharp filet knife. So needless to say I have a drawer full of old filet and chef knives of varing quality and dullness. I have tried so many sharpening techniques and nothing I tried could restore the original sharpness without spending a ton of time an energy.
Well let me tell you, all the positive reviews are correct, this is a marvelous little gem and its the best $24 dollars I ever spent. Less than the new knife I was going to buy. I have knives of every metal imaginable and this little baby put an edge on them that is crazy sharp. I had to warn the wife about how sharp the knives were. Before if a burgular would come at me with one of my knives I would have died laughing, now I have to worry how they are stored in the drawer so not to accidently cut myself rummaging around in there.
Trust me, if you need your knives sharper than this baby gives you then you just are plain crazy. I believe I saw my onions cowering in the fridge! I had to cook a big seafood gumbo with extra onions and celery just to celebrate my new sharp knives.
This baby gets The Cajun seal of approval!!!

It has now been almost three months since I first sharpened my knives and wrote this review. I use my knives everyday and they have held their edge ever since, this sharpener is just collecting dust now because I have had no need to resharpen them. I of course use a good piece of steel to keep a razor edge but otherwise I don't foresee having to resharpen for awhile yet.

Its has been over 6 months now. My knives are sharp as razors with only two sharpening times. And they get heavy use, cleaning huge catfish from my pond and also chicken and all sorts of heavy kitchen use. Coupled with a nice piece of steel this sharpener is so good I just can't live without it. With so much usuage out of my knives and only having to sharpen 2 times in the last 6 months I would have to say it is the best 24$ I have ever spent!

It has now been 2 years since purchasing this excellent knife sharpener. It is funny, I took this sharpener down from the top shelf to sharpen my 12" chef knife before cutting up a ton of meat to make sausage and I had to wipe all the dust off of it before using it, that is how infrequent I have to sharpen my knifes, and I use my knives for heavy duty use! Love this sharpener! Get yourself a decent piece of steel, a good chopping board and you got it made.
***Update 4*** It now has been 4 years! It is funny 2 years ago my wife bought me this exact sharpener by accident. I had it on my Amazon wish list...for review purposes and she didn't even realize I had one, that is how infrequently I have to sharpen my chef knives. I kept a hold of it to see how long my original one would last, well I am tired of waiting, I am bringing the unopened 2 year old sharpener to work today to sell it.
And I do a lot of cutting and I just took it down from the cabinet and had to dust if off again to see how well it worked before letting go with the unopened one. Knives didn't need it just wanted to 'top em off', all like new again.
*Note to commenter, all my knives in use are in their original cases, or original sleeve.
Next year will be my 5 year review. The person I am selling the unopened sharpener to is a hard core hunter and trapper. We will see how it handles. Stay tuned.

One night my husband spent three hours sharpening our Chicago Cutlery set by hand and afterwards said he wanted to find an electric sharpner. We started pricing them, but from what we saw they ranged from $80-$135. I went online and found the EverSharp and after reading the reviews purchased it and set it aside for XMas. I just have to say that it has lived up to expectations and then some. It's amazing how quick and effecient this sharpner is! In less than five minutes my husband had our Cutlery knives sharpened even better than they were when we originally got them. He then sharpened his mother's knives that have never had a good sharpening.
I knew I had bought him a good product when after each sharpening he looked at the knife and whispered: "Oh my God!"

For years we had a large griddle made by a different manufacturer. It was terrific, but when I finally dropped it and the plastic handle/supports broke, I realized it was time for a new one. Plus, I was no longer cooking for a crowd, but for just the two of us. With this Liddle Griddle, I'm amazed at how much more precise the temperature control is, and how much more often we use this thing -- often in preference over a skillet, which takes up more room in the dishwasher. (Yes, I said dishwasher.) Though the earlier one could be washed in the dishwasher, it was too big. This one fits easily, and still leaves plenty of room for a day's worth of stuff. We have really enjoyed our liddle griddle. Its convenient to cook anything. It's especially good for breakfast - pancakes, bacon & eggs. But we have also ended up cooking hamburgers or porkchops on it when the gas grill has run out of fuel. The size makes it easy to clean and store. We are ordering our third griddle shortly - we use them so much that the surface wears out. Now, don't get me wrong - our first griddle lasted about 5 years, the last one about 2 years. Nothing last forever.

Presto has been making this popper for a long time. I bought one about 15 years ago, and use it maybe once a week. Makes wonderful popcorn, evenly popped, no burning, no oils, just great popcorn. You do need to put a big bowl under it and turn the bowl, but with this slight attention, there is no mess.

The popper died last night -- motor burned out. But how many consumer devices last 15 years? I got my money's worth.

I'm in college and live on air popcorn (don't like microwave -- I'm spoiled!) Anyway, I had a Presto popper that died after 15 or 20 years of use. I got a new one that was a Salton and it only lasted a month. When I saw a Presto popcorn maker, I was thrilled! I trust this brand 100%! I've had one of these for more than 10 years and am ordering a new one because the yellow plastic air guide has just disintegrated from age and heating. The motor and element are still working.

Yes: if you leave it alone it does throw out a few blistering-hot kernels. But if during the first 30 seconds of running you hold it and tilt it back about 30 degrees, it doesn't. As soon as any kernels have popped you can set it down again.

Lowest-calorie popcorn? At the supermarket, buy an aerosol can of cooking oil spray. Face the popcorn bowl, spray in right hand and salt-shaker in left. As the popcorn tumbles out, alternately spritz with cooking oil and sprinkle with salt. The oil spray has basically zero calories (a teaspoon per batch?) but it makes the salt stick to the popcorn!

Fun with your popper, impress the kids. There are always a few kernels that don't pop left in the bottom. And every time, one or 2 will go off a couple seconds AFTER you pull the plug. So: pull out the plug, slowly raise your index finger and point, magically, at the popper. Bang! Blow smoke off imaginery gun barrel. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

The Presto Poplite Popper is the same as the (more expensive)Presto Orville Redenbacher's Popper. I emailed Presto. They said "Functionally there is no difference between the two corn poppers". So save some money and get the Poplite. This popper works awsome. It blows away my old air-popper. It pumps out the popcorn super fast, with very few unpopped kernals. At first- I experienced ALL of the cons that some of the other reviewers listed with the Presto Popper.
After lots of experimenting- I found solutions for all of them, and often enjoy a "full flavor" HEALTHY buttered/salted bowl of popcorn (inexpensive too!)!


This is how I now make "YUMMY" popcorn!
This takes a little extra effort, but the rewards are well worth it!
For this to work, you MUST NOT LEAVE UNNATTENDED, "for any reason"!
1. Instead of pouring the popcorn in a cold machine- I first preheat it by plugging it in for at least "3" minutes, with the top "completely off" (pour out any old unpopped kernels, before plugging it in!)!
While waiting- I put kernels the measuring cup, microwave my "good tasting" butter substitute (see #2), and fix drinks...
a. I now pour the kernels in, and place the top on, BUT DO NOT PUT THE MEASURING CUP ON TOP YET! This way the kernels, don't BLOW into the bowl..., they just circulate and stay inside & bowl stays cool!
b. As soon as you hear the first small pop (about 1 minute), QUICKLY! Place the measuring cup on top. The popping will soon be VERY rapid!
c. If the popcorn builds up, and does not blow into the bowl, it will burn. I hold onto the still cool top, tilt and firmly shake/tap/tilt... the machine until kernels fall into the bowl, and start blowing in on their own. Leave a few extra seconds for all kernels to pop (tilt back a little).

2. Now for the "good tasting!" butter substitute-
Update#1!- I now prefer organic butter, and finely ground (coffee Grinder...Tnx!)Natural/Healthier (processed salt is bad for you, and so is ANY margarine Google... it!) "Himalayan" mined Sea Salt is supposedly bad for you..., so I switched to Celtic Sea salt!Celtic Sea Salt, Fine Ground, By The Grain & Salt Society, 1 #
Update#2!- If you melt butter... in the cup on top, with ANY air popper! It WILL eventually crack & split!
a. If you must use margarine- I place 1/4 cup of "Country Crock Light" brand margarine (#1 in taste tests, NO trans fat, no cholesterol, cooks/melts... just like butter in ALL recipes/frying..., about $2.50 for a 3 lb tub) in a microwave safe ceramic/glass cup (no plastic EVER in microwave/BAD for you!).
I heat it on 5 for 10 seconds. Then stir well, and microwave for another 5 seconds, and stir well one last time. I then stir in a teaspoon of "Butter Buds" seasoning (for butter flavor)
Ready to pour on top of popcorn, and "quickly" stir in thoroughly with a coffee spoon.

3. For people on low-sodium!- Shake on some "AlsoSalt"- Excellent tasting "sodium free" Salt Substitute, that tastes MUCH like salt (no aftertaste...!)!
Not in most stores yet, but you can find/buy it online with a Google... search.
Comes in three flavors- Regular, butter, and Garlic (all are "EXCELLENT" for ALL cooking...).

4. Shake on some Parmesan Cheese/or Garlic..., for a GREAT taste treat!

My wife & I both drink coffee, but not the same type, so it doesn't make sense for us to use a 2+ cup coffee maker since we'd have to make two separate portions anyway. So we each have our own B&D, & use them simultaneously. The coffee comes out fine; I use Starbucks Verona (which my wife says tastes like burnt coffee from the bottom of a pot anyway), & she uses a decaff chocolate blueberry flavor. The only difficulty (& it's not a fault of the B&D) is that the #1 filters are hard to find, even on the internet, but this coffee maker comes with a permanent, dishwasher safe filter, so you really don't have to use paper filters if you don't want to. I have used this coffee maker for over 5 years now and it's still running great. In fact, I just bought another one to take on trips & bring to the office.
Pros:
1. I don't have to make more than one serving at a time for myself and it brews straight into the mug.
2. It comes with a permanent filter but you can also use cone filters size #1 which I can buy nearby. Less messy to clean up using the paper filter. I just toss the grounds in the trash.
3. Quick to brew; done in < 5 minutes Cons: 1. Hard to find a replacement mug of the right size or permanent filter 2. No warming element 3. The grounds do soak up some water and less comes out that you put in but it also happens with larger coffee pots (which being larger, you don't notice as much because you aren't MEASURING with the same cup you drink from). Hints: 1. To stop grounds from floating into the water resevoir, use drip or cone ground coffee. Avoid very finely ground (i.e., espresso) 2. To avoid overflows, leave the cover off while brewing. Unfortunately, Black and Decker changed the design and I was unable to find a replacement filter from them or anybody. I looked for a replacement single cup coffee maker in several retailers and finally found one on Amazon at a very reasonable price. However, newer is not better. The new model filter only has screen on the 2 sides and is mostly plastic, where as the original was mostly a fine screen with plastic reinforcement. From the very first cup it was a disappointment, as coffee grounds overflowed into my cup and throughout the coffee maker. This new design filter does not let the water pass through quick enough when you use a fine or moderate grinds of coffee. With larger grinds the coffee comes out weak, or if you try to make it stronger by adding more grinds you can have the same overflow problem! For months I would put coarse coffee in the bottom and the better fine ground coffee on top and crossed my fingers. Then the other day I was in CVS and saw a single cup coffee maker for 15 bucks. It has a mostly screen filter like the original B&D and works great! The next day I was in Big Lots and found another one that appears to use a #2 filter (so replacements can be easy in the future) and it works great for 10 bucks!! The Black and Decker is going in the trash!! Save yourself the hassle and get something else and make sure it has a lot of screen area in the filter. This is exactly what I was looking for. It works great and I was making perfect pizzelles in no time at all. I pulled it out of the box, mixed up some batter with the including instruction book and I had pizzelles! They tasted great! The iron heated up quickly and held the temperature constant throughout. The instruction book has recipes for regular vanilla pizzelles and anise ones as well as a chocolate version and another fancier one. I only tried the basic one so far because that what we like but the recipe is easy to follow. I just dumped all the ingredients together and a baking I was. This product was everything I expected and more. You can only make 2 at a time but they go so quickly I had dozens made in no time at all. I was worried when I bought this since it was the cheapest one Amazon had but I didn't want to spend the extra money and I'm glad I didn't. Perfect Pizzelles! This is a great pizzelle maker and you can't beat the price. It heats quickly and evenly, the nonstick surface is easy to clean and you can store it upright to save space. It also has several settings so you can make them lighter or darker. The nonstick surface is great, all you really need is a quick wipe with a wet paper towel, I am a maniac about cleaning so I also like to use a toothbrush to clean all the nooks and crannies in the press. Although it doesn't have an indicator tone, you can hear a soft click when the light is turning from green to red so you can multi task. The instruction book comes with several traditional recipes that you can mix up in minutes. Perfect for holidays or anytime you want a quick treat. Anise, vanilla and almond are my favorites, I have not tried it yet but I was thinking of making a batch with banana extract, I imagine you could pretty much use any extract. Highly recommended! The product does exactly what it is billed to do: it grills sandwiches quickly. The problem is that the grill is very small, so normal grocery store bread is way too big and it hangs out the side. In addition, if you want to make a bigger sandwich, i.e., stacked with several ingredients, the lid will not close and lock without Herculean strength and the risk of burning yourself. It does OK with two small pieces of bread and a small amount of cheese. But, for that, it's just as easy to heat up a nonstick frying pan. This is a great little appliance for making good grilled sandwiches FAST! I was surprised that it only took about 2 minutes to grill 2 sandwiches. A green light comes on when they are done, and it's right on - when that light comes on, the sandwiches are perfectly browned. I would have given it five stars, but I think it would be easier to clean if the grilling plates snapped out like some larger sandwich makers out there. Overall, a good buy. A good deal! Popped up on my Gold Box so I got this for less than the price noted. Easy enough for my eight year old to operate. I used thick slices and low fat margarine even though the directions advised not too...but still turned out good (even though the sandwiches are'nt as pretty as pictured!!!). I had one of these for almost six years and used it on a daily basis (not just for making tea, but also for boiling water quickly for other uses, i.e. food preparation). It always looked great and was a pleasure to use, but one day it stopped working. So I went online and looked at all of the kettles currently available. I thought about trying a different brand, but all of the other stainless steel kettles (I wasn't interested in plastic) had something I didn't like about them -- an awkwardly placed handle, an exposed element, etc. In the Chef's Choice kettle the element is hidden, so the interior of the kettle is easy to clean (it pretty much doesn't have to be cleaned at all, since only water is ever put in the kettle), and if the element gets covered in scale, I don't know about it (Chef's Choice does recommend occasionally "decalcifying" the kettle by boiling some white vinegar in it -- I never did this with my first kettle and I wonder if this eventually led to it malfunctioning?). The handle doesn't extend over the opening of the kettle, so it is easy to fill, and the spout is truly dripless. And of course the cord is attached to the base, not the kettle itself, so there is no need to plug and unplug it when carrying the kettle to sink or table or stove or wherever. So I'm on my second Chef's Choice kettle and very happy with it so far. I'm the kind of person who doesn't go in for a lot of kitchen gadgets, and I don't like using electric/electronic items when a manual or mechanical one will do, but I definitely recommend an electric kettle because it is energy-saving, fast, and won't boil dry (if you forget about it) or annoy you with a whistle (when you're busy doing something else).

UPDATE: (June 2008) My second one of these has just stopped working. I still love the design of this kettle, and maybe 5-6 years is not a bad lifespan, but . . . I think I might give the Breville kettle a try this time. Will report back! Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Like another reviewer here, this is my second Chef's Choice electric teakettle. My first one, purchased at Williams-Sonoma in the mid-1990s, suddenly stopped working after my neighbors borrowed it (hummm...). As do all items purchased there, it had a lifetime warrenty, so I took it back and was given the brand of electric tea kettle they were selling at the time. I did _not_ like it, especially the placement of the handle, and promptly returned it. This was 2003 and Amazon was now carrying the brand so I ordered it here after being unable to find an electric tea kettle with a comfortably placed handle or adequate capacity in any local stores.

I use mine a minimum of twice, more commonly three times a day and am very, very happy with it. As mentioned in other reviews, having the actual heating elements under a solid bottom of stainless steel definitely prolongs the life of the appliance--the heating elements do not get caked with minerals. The best part for me, however, is the placement of the handle which makes pouring the boiled water both safe and easy for someone with hand and elbow problems--it has superior ergonomics.

I have high mineral content well water. Since I pour the boiled water into a thermal caraf (when not into a tea pot), I often use almost all the boiled water the Chef's Choice holds, which results in an accumulation of minerals on the stainless steel interior bottom. As a natural way of removing the sediment, I occasionally boil potato pealings in it then let it sit (with the pealings) over night. This is a trick I learned from someone who works in agriculture for the World Food Program. It works great. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

An electric kettle seemingly wouldn't wear out, but that is exactly what happened to our previous one after only one year of use. This one has already beaten that. Additionally, it holds the water at a boil for a bit of time, rather than shutting off as soon as the boil is reached. This means that the water stays hotter in the kettle. So, I stole it from the Yo-cheese folks - I bought their cookbook!
This is the simplest and best device for making yogurt cheese. It makes yogurt "cream" in 2 hours, and yogurt cheese stiff enough to make a cheesecake overnight.
A few details. If you fill the device full of yogurt, you need to dump the whey after about 1/2 hour as it gets full. After you have drained the yogurt, empty it by up-ending it into a bowl with a larger mouth than the device, otherwise you waste some of the cheese scraping it out with a spoon.
I use the yogurt cheese to extend mayonaise and sour cream. I've made a lovely low-fat cheesecake with it, mixing it it 2/1 ratio with neufchatel cheese. I have used it in white sauces, and it makes them creamy and yummy!
We bought this to incorporate yogurt cheese into our diet to got lower fat and reduce saturated fat because of cholesterol concerns. It's a great device and it's never not in use at our house!

After purchasing Donvier's yogurt maker, I thought this cheese maker would help me turn my softer yogurt into something thicker, a facsimile of the yogurt I tasted in Turkey and Greece. I was right -- after making my own preservative and additive free yogurt in my Donvier yogurt maker, I simply poured all eight containers into the compact cheesemaker, closed the lid and let it stay overnight in the refrigerator. Voila, the next morning, I had a perfectly creamy spread to put on my whole grain toast. I used Total Greek yogurt as my starter, so my yogurt very nearly reached the perfection I have been seeking: creamy, tart and no added sugar.
If you are a food perfectionist or simply do not like to buy any product loaded with corn syrup or any of the other usual suspects commonly used by manufacturers to up the taste for the general public, you will find purchasing the Donvier yogurt and cheese maker well worth the price. This makes a compact pyramid of tasty yogurt cheese or "laban." This is simply the yogurt curd with the watery portion removed. A lump of this cheese, sweetened with a touch of powdered sugar and served with strawberries is a low-fat dessert if you use non-fat yogurt. The cheese also works as a sour-cream substitute. I love this waffle maker! It's like the ones our mom used, not those cheesy seeming plastic things they're making now. It's also got a lot of excellent features that make my life easier.
I'll mention right now that this is a VERY hot waffle maker. They make the plastic ones to be "cool touch". I'll trade the cool touch feature for the sturdier design of this versatile machine. I'm being careful and haven't burned myself yet. But it's something to consider if you'd like your children making waffles. My ten year old could be careful enough, but I keep my five and eight year olds away.
The waffles this machine makes are great! They freeze well too. The family is very happy. When the light goes of the unit is ready to make waffles. Pour in the batter and the light comes on again--wait for it to go off and the waffle is done (however, I usually go on instinct and sometimes pull out the waffle before the light goes off.)
The open grill feature makes wonderful pancakes and fried eggs. I have a big family and it's nice to have two pancakes cook at a shot without taking up all my stovetop! I can have bacon and eggs on the stove and the pancakes on the waffle maker. (I can also have a heart attack if I keep eating all these bacon and eggs!)
The sandwich feature is nice. I can cook two grilled cheese sandwiches at one time getting me out of the kitchen quicker. Some advice--cheese might drip out the side of the sandwich. Just keep the sandwich away from the back of the unit where the cables run in and the mess just wipes off--no problem. The sandwiches cook far more uniformly than they do in a pan on the stove. They taste great.
This unit cleans up easily and changing the grills from waffle to flat is easy. I recommend it over a lot of more costly models if you want more value for your money. This is the most versatile waffle maker I've found and all the features actually work!

I got this one after unsuccessfully trying the Cuisinart waffle maker. It is wonderful! None of the batters, not even gluten-free ones would stick. All waffles came out great, crisp outside and moist inside. The grill feature was a plus and makes great grill cheese or other types or grilled sandwishes in a jiffy. Back in the 60's I loved the Sundays my Dad made waffles on a toastmaster Waffle/grill. He would add cinnamon, fruit, all kinds of things. Never stuck always light and fluffy. When I went to college my odyssey began. I have gone through 4! different brands and here is why you want this machine - Ok Betty Crocker and others may have a beeper but the waffle that comes out could have come out of a toaster, B&D lets you choose on a dark to light waffle 'zone' with a light that goes out when it reaches that temp. Even with a thick from the box batter out came the most fluffy waffle with a Belgium like crust. Take a close look at this baby it's CROME and yes it will get hot, (kids don't touch) but unlike others it CLEANS UP. Overflows are no problem. Just as good a George Forman. And grilled sandwiches were wonderful but I use old world bakery bread with brie and dry salami, again adjust for light and dark. Favorite recipe? Coco for a chocolate waffle and chocolate chip ice cream to make a sandwich. This is an 'open and closed' case and really is space saver 3 in 1 product for our family. I had been looking for a good raclette grill for sometime, after using several different styles at friends and families homes, I saw this one on Amazon. It arrived intact with all the necessary parts and is very easy to use. The grill top reverses to a crape grill which is also fun.
I recommend this particular grill above others I have used for several reasons. First, it can accomodate 8 people, while many grills max out at 6. Second, it has an adjustable temperature. We generally start out at a higher temperature then when everyone has slowed down and wants to eat slowly and talk I adjust the temperature down. Third, the grill is easy to clean. Its non-stick surface easily wipes off. I would advise to only use the included scrapers on the non-stick surface, if it gets scratched it will not be as easy to use. And fourth, it is very sturdy. This is a solidly built grill and looks great on the table. It is a little more money than some other models, but if you want to use it for years I would definately invest in the better grill.

I purchased this grill a couple months ago and have used it about 8 times.My family and I have enjoyed the novelty of cooking our dinner together at the table. I have noticed that waiting for the food to cook, both the time and the effort required, has been a very enjoyable stimulus for conversation. It lends a leisurely mood to dinner instead of the usual rush to get on to other activities. It also has made getting a healthy dinner on the table easier for me after a day at work.
The night before I will usually slice some veggie's, thaw some shrimp or marinate some beef or lamb. I just grab the bowls out of the fridge and set them on the table for cooking.Everything we have prepared so far has turned out great. The kitchen stays clean and cleanup amounts to some dishes and utensils to put in the dish washer.
The only reason I didn't give this product 5 stars was that the grill itself is hard to clean. I have had to soak it overnight to clean off the marinades. The grill had also begun to lose its coating surface after just a few times of use.
All in all, its a good product and the benefits of slowing down for a meal with family or friends is well worth the purchase price.

We are having a lot of fun with this grill.
This grill is great fun for dinner parties. I have now thrown 4 dinner parties using it - from basic grilling to fajitas. I plan to try the round side of the grill next for dessert crepes. Traditional raclette is cheese melted in the drawers, with pickles and cold meats. I also use it as a party activity for more healthy fare - by offering a variety of marinated vegetables - portobello mushrooms marinated in balsamic vinegar, olive oil, basil, garlic and red pepper is my favorite. I've grilled shrimp, asparagus, onions, chicken, tofu, bell peppers, sausages, sliced potatoes (I boil them a bit first.) Then I put out sauces for people to dip into as well.
I find it helps break the ice with guests who don't know one another so well, as they can talk about the grilling, etc.
My one complaint is that it would be hard for eight people to use, the most I have used it for now is six, but it worked really well for six. The adjustable heating works really nicely.
If you're looking for something new and fun, I highly recommend it. It is great for dinner parties and book club meetings (everyone can bring something to grill.)
