Feeding Betta fish is important because, well, all living things
need to eat; and while Betta fish don't need to eat a lot of
food, they certainly fall into the "living things" category.
However, first time Betta fish care givers are going to have a
tough time because there is not only a ton of information out
there about how much to
feed your Betta fish, but caring for Betta fish properly also
requires that you have a good knowledge of what to feed
them.
For example, the top food types on the
market are processed pellets, flakes, freeze dried bloodworms,
and live foods. Because the freeze dried worms and most live
foods are high in fat and protein but lacking in other areas of
nutrition, most Betta care experts recommend against using them
as a full time feeding diet. However, I will say that in the wild
Bettas don't eat much more than insects and small critters so if
your Betta prefers these foods that's ok.
Setting the more "snack" foods aside,
let's look at our options. First up is pellets, which are small,
round, hard balls. These pellets usually contain the same
nutritional value as flakes, but are easier to measure with
(because the pellets are roughly the same size whereas flakes
vary a lot). For example, feeding 3 pellets per day is probably
going to be more regular than 3 flakes per day.
One of the drawbacks is than at first
fish may find them hard to swallow (literally) because they are
so hard. I recommend soaking them a bit in a cup of water to
soften them up and then feeding them to your pet. The cool thing
about this is that you can actually have them jump up and eat the
pellets off of your fingers!
Next post I'll talk about flakes in
detail for some compare/contrast, until then, check out these
betta fish care tips and have a good
one!
