(More customer reviews)Yes, this book is
about taking Getaways
with your Girlfriends, both extravagant and
short "evening, in the neighborhood"
getaways - but it is also a book about living
a more extraordinary life.
There are a couple truths I have discovered in
my own life and travels with girlfriends that
spoke to me as soon as I casually thumbed
through this compelling book.
The first is: "Road trips can save you big bucks
in therapy." AMEN to that!
The second is: "Before going on a roadtrip,
practice calling shotgun in a loud, persuasive voice."
(I loved that one!)
And..... the other truths pepper the pages.. I even found
a quote from Mary Oliver that leaped from the
page and has shed light on my entire day
ever since I read it:
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your
one wild and precious life" Mary Oliver.
Each Getaway includes "The Girlfriends" (who
inspired the entry); "The Mission" (why invest
your time, effort and energy on the getaway)
and then "The Getaway" itself - also known
as the Story of The Getaway.
Author Pam Grout includes ooodles of web-
resources and a wide variety of getaways for
you and your friends to enjoy immediately.
Prepare to live with more zest and joy
than you may have thought possible....

(More customer reviews)The novel is about
a resort manager's (Emillie Woodward)ability to increase occupancy
at the resort, with a friendship which the author tries to pass for
romance thrown in. The entire novel is centered on Emillie's
efforts to increase occupancy. Her relationship (and I use that
term loosely) with her "love interest" Rowan James is very very
dull and you are left wondering why this novel is categorized as a
romance novel. I believe Emillie and Rowan were intimate once (I
could be wrong, but that just tells you that their intimate moments
were not memorable). There is no passion, no romance, no love. It is
among the dullest book I have read in quite a while. The title is
very misleading as there was no sex on Flamingo Beach! This book is
not worth the time spent reading it and unfortunately the rating
does not allow zero star!

crowds out the erotic fantasies of Rowan that have lately filled

(More customer reviews)This book will be
useful as an entry-level introduction to just war theory. The
author presents in methodical fashion the key tenets of just war
theory and the many strands of interpretation that surround it. He
does a good job of summarising and simplifying the voluminous
material that underpin the theory in its present form. The best
parts of the book are the range of case studies appropriately
chosen by the author to draw out the relevance of different aspects
of just war theory. An attempt is also made to re-work the theory
for contemporary consumption, taking special reference of the rise
of transnational terrorism and asymmetric warfare in recent
times.
My main concern with the book, however, lies with its lack of
imagination and nuance. The theory and its application are
presented in an overly formulaic fashion that simplifies issues too
much. The author's proposition of divided the existing theory into
two versions for regular and irregular warfare is a solution too
superficial for a problem of many dimensions. The writing, although
clear, is awkward in places and contributes to the altogether
perfunctory feel of the whole book. On these accounts, the book
offers little in the way of grappling with contemporary debates on
the theory, or with informing decision makers of the ethical
implications of their decisions. Nonetheless, it still offers a
decent - if superficial - introduction to the subject.

War and Ethics: A New Just War Theory (Think
Now)
Think Now is a stimulating and accessible series of books dealing
with contemporary social issues from a philosophical
perspective.Written by experts in philosophy, these books offer
sophisticated and provocative yet engaging writing on political and
cultural themes of genuine concern to the educated reader. The
US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 prompted unprecedented public
interest in the ethics of war, a debate that has raged furiously in
the media, in politics and in the public consciousness ever since.
In this fascinating and informative book, Nicholas Fotion,
Professor of Philosophy at Emory University, USA and an expert on
the ethics of military action, explores the notion of developing an
ethical theory that guides the behaviour of those who are at war.
Fotion gives a clear account of just war theory, presenting it as a
useful device in helping us make decisions about what we should do
when war appears on the horizon. Examining conflicts such as Korea,
Vietnam, Iraq, Israel, the Falklands and Afghanistan, the book
interrogates the roles of the various parties involved in military
action - the military, government officials, and the side-line
judges (journalists, citizens, scholars, neutral nations) - and the
role just war theory should play as a direct guide to behaviour.
Articulate, provocative and stimulating, War and Ethics is an ideal
introduction to this hugely important debate.

(More customer reviews)Birnbaum's Walt
Disney World Without Kids is meant to be a companion to the
Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2009. For a book like this to be
useful, it needs to provide extensive information on things that
would be of use to adults yet not was deemed unworthy of inclusion
in the main guide. After all, if it's in the main guide already why
do we need this book? The guide also needs genuine critiques of
restaurants and hotels that would be most suitable for romantic (or
at least quiet) outings. Detailed reviews of dinner shows would
also be a plus. These are just a few examples that single adults
and couples might find useful. The key is that readers need good
details and honest evaluations for a book of this type to have any
value. The only other guide of this type that I have read was The
Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World for Grown-Ups (Unofficial
Guides) and it failed to offer enough of value to justify its
purchase. Did Birnbaum's fare better?
One undeniable strength is that this book retains the high
production values of the Birnbaum's series. It's loaded with very
nice photos. The writing is clear and concise making for a quick,
easy read. In other words, the form is wonderful. But the
substance, that's where we stumble. There are no real critiques or
comparisons offered. The coverage is too shallow to allow you to
truly discrimiate which places would be best suited to your needs.
There is also too little material that isn't available in the
standard guidebooks for the area. In the final analysis, there just
isn't enough substance here to make it worth buying.
If you're looking for a guide to Orlando primarily composed of
photos and basic coverage of the area, then the Birnbaum's Walt
Disney World 2009 is by far the better choice. If you want a more
substantial book that is packed with detailed information then the
The Unofficial Guide Walt Disney World 2009 (Unofficial Guides) is
your best bet. If you really want the full picture, buy both of
them. But whatever approach you choose, save your money and skip
this one.

(More customer reviews)This is an
incredible real story of survival. Who can ever would have thought
that a huge whale will struck the wooden ship with such ferocity,
twice. Here you will learn what really thirst and hunger is, and
what are the effects of that in the body in a prolonged situation.
Three months they were in the sea, because of a bad decision of
heading south to the coast of Chile instead of moving with the
currents to the nearby Tahiti or other islands of the mid pacific.
This book has the account of Chase, the captain and one of the
shipmates that were left in Henderson Island (Google Earth:
24°20'43S & 128°18'01W). The few boat survivors were taken to
Valparaiso (Chile) for recuperation before going back home. This is
a great book and a story that you can also read in Nathaniel
Philbrick's, In the Heart of the Sea, a book I read a few years
ago. Enjoy!

Shipwreck of the Whaleship "Essex"
Shipwreck of the Whaleship Essex is the gripping story of a ship's
encounter with a great white whale and the crew's harrowing plight
for survival on the open seas. On 20 November 1820 the Essex was
rammed by a sperm whale and sank in mid-Pacific. This book contains
first mate's Owen Chase's original 1821 narrative, as well as two
others written by the captain and a shipmate of the Essex. Each
tells of the whale's attack, the sinking of the ship, and the three
dreadful months that followed as the remainder of the crew were
left stranded in a few small open boats in the South Seas. Of the
twenty men that escaped the ship, eight survived; and they did so
only by resorting to cannibalism.Capturing all the elements of an
ancient and powerful tragedy, this book is a thrilling tale of
survival - as well as a frightful example of man's darkest impulses
- which allows the reader a gruesome glimpse behind the theatrical
veil of honour and bravery that history often ascribes to such men
of the sea. 'The reading of this wondrous story had a surprising
effect upon me,' wrote Herman Melville on reading Owen Chase's
narrative. An age-old gem of maritime lore, this story has made its
mark as an inspiration for Moby Dick, one of the most legendary
novels ever written.

(More customer reviews)The first thing I
want to say: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
That may sound like an immature way to start a book review, but
bear with me here. Although most likely only past, present, or
future College Program students would consider purchasing and
reading this book, I am going to copy and paste this review into as
many places as possible, because I am extremely frustrated with it
and wish to make my opinions known. That's just me, I suppose.
The Walt Disney World College Program is one of those life
experiences that arouses different opinions in every one of its
participants. There are people who love the CP and Disney so much
that they will never speak an ill word about it. There are people
who will say that the CP was a complete waste of their time. And of
course, there are many, many people who are half-and-half about it.
Personally, I'm somewhere in between that person who loves the CP
and what it did for me so much, and that half-and-half person. It
is hard for me to say anything ill about the CP, yet I will at
least admit that it isn't perfect. That said, I now delve into my
review of Mousecatraz...
At first, I was excited that someone had, eh-hem, gotten up the
balls to publish a book about the College Program. Unfortunately,
with every page I read, the more frustrated and annoyed I got.
First of all, this "book" reads like a bad research paper. Books
should not read like research papers as it is, and the reason I say
it reads like a bad one is because of the numerous grammar mistakes
(i.e. he obviously does not know anything about comma splices) and
the fact that the author basically took as much information as he
could off unofficial websites and just updated it. He inserts just
enough believable stories along with this information to make the
book somewhat credible, while going out of his way to compile
and/or make up stories that are obviously false. Beyond that, there
are many times where he states "information" that is also
completely incorrect.
I certainly don't claim to know everything about the college
program, as it is an experience that constantly changes with the
times. However, I do know enough to know when someone did not do
the correct amount of research before writing a book on the
subject. To top it all off, my "beef" with this book is not only
because of its bad grammar and pages upon pages of
misinformation--truthfully, I believe that it cheapens the College
Program experience. A lot of boring information and a few amusing
quotes and stories (I say "few" because I cannot count the "many"
that were obviously false) does not a College Program make. In
fact, I'm not sure any website or book could ever truly capture the
Walt Disney World College Program. It is different for every person
that experiences it--whether you go for the work experience, the
partying, just to "get away" from the real world for a while, or a
combination of those things. My advice? If you did the CP, write
your own memoir of your experience, because that will help you
relive it more than a random collection made up of some true and
untrue stories. If you have yet to do the CP, don't read this book.
Go and experience it the way you want to experience it, decide for
yourself how you feel about it. Just please, please, don't waste
your time, energy, or for God's sake, MONEY, on this book.

(More customer reviews)First off, I
decided to review this book because I was rather annoyed that the
other three reviewers likely know the author. Why do I think this?
All 3 have only reviewed this book, all reviews were completed
within a 48 hour period a few months ago, all say things that
encourage you to buy extra books, and one of the reviewers is from
the same town as the author. I depend a lot on reviews and that
just doesn't seem right to me.
This book does have some nice recipes. Some of the ingredients
might be a little hard to come by, but I garden and I can see
myself being able to make a lot of the recipes. The book really is
beautiful, but I guess I was looking more for function and less for
beautiful. This book is way too big. I seriously don't know how I
am going to fit it on the shelves where I keep my recipe books.
Also, it is just plain awkward to read. It's not thick, it's just
very tall and wide.
If you want a coffee table book about spa water, I think this book
would be good for that. If you want a lot of healthy recipes to
jazz up water, I recommend the book "Cool Waters" which I ordered
at the same time as this one. I paid about $10 for "Cool Waters"
which has 50 recipes (20 cents per recipe), whereas this book has
22 recipes for about $22 ($1 per recipe). The quality of the
recipes is comparable, but "Cool Waters" is not as visually
artistic as this book.
