Small Business ideas for business owners in the Niagara Canada area.

Hamilton Pest Control: Petty Pest Control New Website in Hamilton, Niagara!

If you're looking for a Hamilton pest control company you'll be interested in our latest website in Hamilton Ontario.

The site is www.ehamiltonpestcontrol.com and the company is Petty Pest Control Services.

Hamilton_pest_control

I learned a lot of pest control stuff from Jim Petty, the owner.  For example, I didn't know that when they remove a pest from your home or wherever such as a raccoon, they take it far enough away that it won't likely find its way back to your home.  The also don't kill these animals, which I was somewhat relieved to know.

Jim specializes in the control of indoor pests such as bed bugs.  Did you know that bed bugs are not necessarily a sign of uncleanliness?  But once you've got them you need someone like Petty Pest Control to get rid of them.

I hope you like this new Hamilton Website Design.  It's from our new minisite series and features a home page video, and autoresponder system for lead generation.

If you're in need of Pest Control in the Hamilton, Niagara area, don't hesitate to call Jim Petty at Petty Pest Control Services.

And hey…how about a plug for me?  Yep…if you need a great website in the Hamilton Niagara area to generate new business for your small to medium sized offline business, give me a call.

Take care,
Murray.

Trimline of Burloak Launches New Website

We've just completed a great new website for Trimline in the Burlington area.  It's www.Trimlineofburloak.com.

I was amazed at the work these guys do.  Vehicle wraps for small vehicles to large buses, they can make any vehicle graphics job look great.

Trimline of Burloak has been in business for 33 years so they know what they're doing.  They not only install the vehicle wraps, but they also do the design work and create the graphics in-house.

In addition to vehicle wraps, Trimline of Burloak has a great product that protects the paint on a car.  It's called 3m Paint Protection film and we put a video on the website that shows how effective this film is in preventing stone chips and other normal damage that vehicles experience.

A product that I also liked is their Window Frosting.  This is a great product for offices, and other commercial establishments.  It adds to the beauty of the window while providing a level of privacy.

I hope you like the website and remember if you want a vehicle wrap in the Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Niagara area, check out my friends at Trimline of Burloak.

Brock Student Housing Made Easier by New NSHA Website

As a University town St. Catharines has its share of students coming from out of town to attend Brock University or Niagara College.

Finding just the right student housing can be challenging at best and if a student isn't quick about getting their student apartment booked early enough they may find it hard to get a good one.

There's a great new website that we've just launched for the Niagara Student Housing Association that will help with Brock Student housing in the St.Catharines area.  The new NSHA site helps landlords who have student apartments or full student homes available for rent to easily list their student rental on the NSHA website.

The new Niagara Student Housing Association website is easy for students to navigate.  Each listing provides images and a description of the rental property in addition to a handy Google Map to make it easy to find the location.

If you're a Brock University Student looking for a place to live for the school term, check out the new NSHA website.

Why Website Design Is Helpful For Small Business

I found the following article to be interesting and one that I hope will help you when considering a web design for your business.

The advancement of technology becomes so evident in every part of the world. Its influence can be seen in medicine, in educational systems, in economics, in engineering and in almost every field. That makes it also reasonable for small businesses to work on their online presence. They would want their products and services to be visible in social networking sites, online classified ads, web directories and many more.

A website plays the role of the perfect platform where a business can really grow from the promotional point of view. A website also helps a business sell its products and services in the most desired manner possible. What makes today's websites so special? Well, the websites are now easier to navigate and they are highly engaging. Design agencies like those of web designing now have every solution for a decent web site development and design experience. Just by contacting such a firm, you can now get your desired web-site design without any hassles.

The site's web design is one helpful factor that may affect a site visitor to stay browsing the site and possibly be buying the products or services that the company offers. It is the one giving the first impression to the visitors and potential customers. A website design company even shared that the things people see when they land on the site's URL needs to inspire confidence in the product s or services it offers and generate enough curiosity to get them to click around. In short, the site's web design can even tell whether the company is reliable enough or if it is one of many other forgettable ones.

Funny as it may be, but instead of helping to boost the popularity and sales of a company, a number of sites fail to serve this purpose due to ineffective and poor web design. Some factors may be the color scheme, improper navigation setup, site's incompatibility with multiple browsers and many more.

While designing a website, every designer hopes that his creation becomes popular amongst the users and is able to attract good traffic. Here are some small factors that you can include in your website design process to ensure a successful process. Many website designers pay of lot of interest on the creativity and beautification of the website. While beautification and creativity is an important part of website designing, it must be kept under control, so that it does not hamper the performance of the website.

There could be a number of things that needs to be well taken care in order to have a creative and effective website design. It may not be easy to have everything accomplished, but some efforts and wise decision will surely help the business.

There's a really important lesson that all of us who have a website need to learn at some point.  It's imperative that you backup your website files!

Unfortunately most website owners have no idea of how to backup their website, nor do they have a webmaster to ensure that this is done for them.  All will go along just fine until the inevitable happens.  The CRASH!

Two years ago, before I learned this lesson for myself, my website went down and I had no backup.  The next week saw me frantically trying to re-create my site.  I've learned my lesson well, and make sure that my clients don't have to go through the same experience.

If you want a reliable company for offsite data storage, and data disaster recovery, you'll want to check out Computer Storage Services.  They're data backup service is simple to use with a great support system.

I hope this little article gets you thinking about safe guarding yourself against losing your website.

Good Luck!
Murray.

I Like Entertainer Websites

I seem to be attracted to doing websites for entertainers and bands.  This  type of website design is entirely different than a small business website and it's really quite challenging, but a lot of fun. Some of the entertainer sites I've worked on are www.WalterOstanekBand.com, and www.BrianRoman.comMy latest entertainer site is for a local blues band in the Niagara, Hamilton area.  They're called The Recall Blues Band; www.TheRecall.ca  This  is a really fun little website since it's a fairly new blues band in the area so the challenge is to create an online following.I hope you'll check out www.TheRecall.ca and if you want to see a great Niagara Blues Band, check out The Recall Blues Band.Murray.

Web Design: Create an SEO Friendly Website To Get Web Traffic

Today I read a great article about web design.  The author, Rocky S. Hopkins, makes some great points about the value of SEO when building your new website.
Some of the main points are;
An SEO friendly website design is the best way to befriend search engines.
45% to 65% of web traffic comes from the search engines so your website simply must be optimized for search if you want your share.
Rocky also pointed out that an SEO friendly website is generally a well designed site that is user friendly for human visitors as well.
Thanks

Don't Make These 5 Web Design Mistakes

Web Design is usually much more involved than many small and medium sized businesses  initially consider. When considering your website design, pay special attention to details that will help make a positive overall user experience. Try to put yourself in your visitor's shoes at all times and design a website that's easy to use and gets straight to the point. The above quotation is from a great article I read about web design in Ezine Articles, written by Rafe Martin. In the article Rafe talks about 5 Common Mistakes than many of us make in our designs.  Such as; Using a splash page, confusing the visitor with too many options, fancy, but confusing menus, and much more.I hope you'll enjoy this article as well; http://ezinearticles.com/?Website-Design-Common-Mistakes&id=4829785Have a great day!

Social Networking Taken To the Next Level With Posterous

You need a great web design to get business from the internet!  Not anymore!  With all of the free social sites on the internet you can get more free advertising for your small or medium sized business than most could ever afford to pay for.  Now don't get me wrong, a great website is important to your business as well, but not as critical as it once was.

The social networks online are all the rage these days.  Facebook and Twitter is constantly in the news, and you can now follow your favorite TV newscaster online.  I was at a coffee shop today with a client and couldn't help but notice the flat screen TV on the counter with the "Follow Us on Twitter" advertisement.  It's difficult to read a newspaper without seeing a Facebook or Twitter ad associated with a business ad.

Small and medium sized businesses have an opportunity to compete against the mega companies.  Think about the free advertising you can get for your business these days.  And the reality is that your customers are there, and many of your competitors are not.  So the time is now.

So the point of this post is to tell you about a publishing service that I'm trying out.  It's called "Posterous".  With this system you simply post an article, video, picture, mp3, or all of the above to "Posterous" and it is broadcast to many of your social network accounts.

So over the next little while I'm going to be posting to; Facebook, Twitter, Buzz, YouTube, my Wordpress blog, and several other accounts.

What this means is that you can simply post an article to one place and it gets broadcast to most of your online properties.  The value is that your message is broadly distributed without spending hours at the computer.  You can even post by email from your smartphone including video and images!

I'll keep you posted on how "Posterous" works for me.  In the meantime, you might want to check out this site; http://posterous.com.

Enjoy!
Murray.

Sell More Cars In Niagara!

Hi Everyone,

I've had a very gratifying relationship with many car dealers in the Niagara area for several years.
There are some really great people in the car business that I would like to pass on some online tips to, so this one is for my car dealer friends.

How would you like to sell more cars from the internet?
Silly question, I know. The great thing about the internet is that if you are ranked in the search engines for search terms that are relevant to your business, i.e. "Used 2006 Pontiac", the only people that are going to find that listing, for the most part, are those who are actually searching for a 2006 Pontiac.

So how do you get into that position?
Ok, well let's slow down a bit. First, you need to do some research to find out what search terms people are actually using. This can be done with the FREE Google Keywords Tool.
With this tool Google will actually show you what terms people are using to search for your products, and also show you the approximate number of searches for that term.
Once you decide on a couple of terms, publish a landing page, or do a blog (even better). Make sure that you're optimizing for that particular search term.

Ouch! That Sounds Complicated...
Ok, so let's do it the easy way. Get your web guy to put a Wordpress blog on your website. Learn how to make entries and publish blogs, and do it on a regular basis. Write interesting blog posts, and optimize those to attract the customers you're looking for.
What make this so easy is that Wordpress isn't any more difficult to learn that using a word processor, or email. Finding keywords is also relatively easy as long as you're not going after broad terms like Used Cars, where you'll need more refined SEO skills to get good rankings.

Social Bookmarking
There are several social bookmarking sites on the internet. The purpose of these is to easily mark a site that you like while browsing the internet. You can then return to your bookmarking site to easily find your favorite websites quickly.

But here's how social bookmarking sites can help you get customers.
Many social bookmarking sites get ranked very easily by Google and the other search engines. This is because they typically provide lots of content, and it's Google's job to direct internet users to relevant content that they're looking for.
So, sign up for a free account at several of these bookmarking sites. Then, everytime you do a new blog, bookmark it using each site. When you bookmark a blog, you have an opportunity to enter in some "tags" or "keywords", this tells the bookmarking site what your blog topic is about. This is also what gets you ranked on Google.

Follow the Steps;
After you've set up a Wordpress blog on your website, or elsewhere, follow the points below. By the way, I recommend Wordpress because of it's built in RSS feed. What this basically means is that when you put something new on your blog, the RSS feed goes out and tells the internet to come and see what you've done. The search engines come calling to see as well.
  1. Write a blog at least 3 times per week. More is better.
  2. Sign up for bookmarking site accounts. Here's an easy way; SocialMarker.
  3. Bookmark your new blog with each of the sites.
If you choose the right keywords, and you optimize your blog and the bookmarking sites properly, you will get traffic to your blog and customers to your dealership. Remember, they are looking for what you have to offer.

There are several other uses for a blog that we'll touch on in a later post.

Car Sales Slow? Why wouldn't you set each of your salespeople up with his or her own blog?
Imagine the exposure you'll get online if you have 10 salespeople doing just 1 blog per day.

For those of you who try this out, let me know how it works out for you.

Got Questions? Go ahead and send me a note below in the comments area. I'd love to hear from you.

Good Selling!
Murray

Small Business Quick Tip - Google Local Business

So you're not on the internet?
Over 70% of internet users, which is over 80% of the Canadian population, use the internet to search for, products and services their interested in buying. If you're not on the internet, you're likely missing out on many of your prospective customers who are searching for what you do or sell.

So Here's a Quick, Easy, and FREE Tip;
If you have access to the internet, you can be listed in Google searches today!

Ever seen a listing that looks like this in Google?

alt

It's called Google Local Business. The example I'm showing in the picture appears in the Google search listings when you type in "web design St.Catharines".
Note that the business listings along with a location map is prominently displayed.
Here's how to get into this free listing...

Just Follow these easy steps;
  1. Open a free Gmail account. Gmail is Google's own email service and one of the best there is. Simply go to Gmail and follow the account setup instructions.
alt
  1. Go to Google Local Business Center and list your business. Make sure that you fill in your business categories and contact information about your business.
alt
If you're already listed in Google Local Business, check to make sure that the information is correct, including contact information; Phone number, address, email address, and website.
When posting an email address, it's always better to use an address with a name on it, i.e. fredbusinessowner@gmail.com. Who likes responding to info@abcbusiness.com. I don't, and I'm sure you don't either. (we'll be covering other email best practices in a later post.

Getting listed in Google Local is a must for local businesses, or anyone looking for new customers; Real Estate Agents, Car Sales People, Insurance Agents, Investment Advisors, Pizza Take Outs, ...

This listing doesn't replace the need to have your own website, but, it's better than nothing, and you'll be surprised...people will call you as a result of finding you in Google Local.

Send me a note if you need help with getting listed. I'll be happy to help out.

Small Business Niagara: Welcome

Hello, and welcome to the Small Business Niagara blog.

Although I welcome everyone to visit this blog, it is especially designed for small business owners in the Niagara Region of Canada.

What's this blog all about?
Exchanging ideas to help all Niagara Small Business owners. I too am a Niagara business owner who hopes to benefit from your experiences and expertise in order to grow my business in Niagara. My experience of 30 years has been in sales and marketing and today I operate an internet consulting company. Helping small businesses with ideas and strategies to get business from the internet and other technologies is what I do for a living. So most of my input will be tips and suggestions to help you out in that area.

The challenges that small business owners face today are many, perhaps more than we've ever seen before. Some businesses will not only survive a tough economy, but actually thrive in it. Others will not. So how do they differ? Well, in my opinion business owners who choose to continue doing things the way they've "always done it", and refuse to accept change and look for new ways to conduct business will find it more and more difficult.
Those however who embrace change, new technologies, and new realities, are more likely to not only survive, but come out of this difficult period even stronger, leaving their competitors far behind.

One of the new realities is that our customers are on the internet in greater numbers than ever before...and it's only getting bigger. Customers are going online to search for products and services that they need or want. In fact over 70%o of consumers are doing research online before even considering calling your business.
Perhaps you've noticed that the consumer is more educated on your products when they come into your store?

But that's not all! Consumers are talking to each other on the internet in Social Networks such as Facebook and MySpace. Statistics show that many consumers make buying decisions based upon the advice that they receive from others on these social sites.

Don't think this applies to you and your buisness? Well before you convince yourself of that, you might want to consider that there are approximately 300,000 people living in the Niagara Penninsula. There are over 100,000 Niagara members of Facebook alone!

Sound a little scary? It can be a little intimidating, but only if you choose not to participate online. Yes, there is a very good chance that people are talking about your buisness online...wheather you're there to see it, or not.

So how can you benefit from this internet activity?
We'll discuss several ideas in future blog discussions, but for now, the short answer is, to get online, show your presence, participate in social activities, and be where your customers are.

Now I know that some of you, perhaps many of you , might be reading this and thinking that you can't do this, you don't know anything about the internet or any of that technical stuff.
Others might be saying to yourself..."I have a website but that hasn't done anything for my business at all."
Don't worry about any of that. We'll cover so many simple ideas that will help you meet your customers online without needing to know anything about the technical stuff. Oh, and your website that's not doing anything? We'll talk about that as well.

I hope that you'll bookmark this blog and come back to visit often. I also hope you'll join in the conversations and add your comments.

Til next time,
Take care,
Murray
