It is very difficult and at the same time invigorating being a
Marriage and Family Therapist. There are many valleys to cross
along the way. Those valleys may include an unusually difficult
client, the occasional immediate family obligation, getting a long
past due claim paid, increasing one's referral base, or just
creating a little "me" time. Even though these are fairly common
among practicing Marriage and Family Therapists, there is one
challenge that all MFTs must encounter, continuing education. MFT
continuing education shouldn't be a burden. Virtually every state
now allows anywhere from half to all of one's CEUs to be attained
from an online provider. This is good news! Online CE has become a
more trustworthy and favorable way of obtaining one's continuing
education. People are not afraid of using the internet like they
were years ago. They trust it for about everything these days. The
achievement of CEUs is no exception. There are three main benefits
of online MFT continuing education: Number one benefit is time. The
time required in attending a seminar is substantial. Time that may
have been better utilized in other areas. Time is a very limited
resource. **End Summary** Topics:

Year after year, there are always several licensees that have
questions on their continuing education obligations. Deciphering
what is required can be a daunting task at times. The expectations
of each state will vary and can change at any time. Each licensee
must keep themselves educated on their state's latest CE
requirements. Every state posts the up-to-date version of their
rules and regulations on their website. This is a good source to
check during each renewal cycle to see if there have been any
changes. The MFT continuing education requirements for each state
can be met from a number of online providers. These online
providers may not be approved in all states for MFTs. Verify that
the provider to be used has the appropriate approval to offer MFT
continuing education courses in your state. The approvals received
and provider numbers issued should be displayed on the online
provider's website. Here are some suggestions on ways to keep
yourself informed regarding your CE requirements: --Document your
state board's phone number, website address, mailing address, fax
number, etc. --Ask to be added to your state board's mailing list
for any newsletters or other communication methods of updates.

You labored for several years in order to receive your B.A. and
your M.A. You learned as you underwent clinical supervision. Then
came your MFT exam, of which you studied for hours preparing
yourself. Finally, you reached the status of a LMFT. You made it!
That's it, right? Not exactly. Now it is time to tackle the annual
or biennial state board requirements of continuing education. Now
you are having flash backs to all nighters preparing for your
midterms and finals. Rest easy, this is not the case now. Methods
for earning continuing education continues to grow and adapt.
Online options have been a big part of recent growth. Continuing
education today provides much greater options at much lower costs
due to the internet. Not all required CE will be accepted from
online sources. Many states will still expect a portion of the
total CE credits to be earned in live seminars or workshops. The
shift in trends from in-person classes to online training will
continue as the internet grows and develops further.
Videoconferencing over the internet is a buzzing trend and a
powerful tool. **End Summary** Topics:
