Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly was introduced to glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. After graduating in 1965, Chihuly enrolled in the first glass program in the country at the University of Wisconsin. He continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he later established the glass program and taught for over a decade.
In 1968, Chihuly was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to work at the Venini factory in Venice, Italy. While in Venice, Chihuly observed the team approach to blowing glass, which is critical to the way he works today. In 1971 Chihuly co-founded Pilchuck Glass School in Washington. With this international glass center, Chihuly has led the avant-garde in the development of glass as a fine art.
His work is included in over two hundred museum collections worldwide. He has been the recipient of many awards, including seven honorary doctorates and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Chihuly has created many well-known series of works, among them the Baskets, Persians, and Seaforms, but he is also celebrated for large architectural installations. In 1995 he embarked on the international project, Chihuly over Venice, which involved working in glass factories in Finland, Ireland and Mexico, with the resultant sculptures installed over the canals and piazze of Venice.
In 1999, Chihuly mounted his most ambitious installation to date, Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem; more than one million visitors attended the Tower of David Museum to view his installations. In 2001 the Victoria and Albert Museum, in London, curated the exhibition Chihuly at the V&A. He exhibited at the Salt Lake Art Center during the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. His first major glasshouse exhibition, Chihuly in the Park: A Garden of Glass was on display at the Garfield Park Conservatory, Chicago. The Chihuly Bridge of Glass in Tacoma, Washington, was dedicated in 2002.

A UCLA team of researchers headed by Keisuke Goda recently introduced the STEAM camera as the world’s fastest camera. This remarkable device is capable of taking more than 6 million pictures in one second. According to an interview with Wired Goda, it was stated that it is the world’s fastest camera. The special camera is being developed for scientific testing and research studies.
STEAM is an acronym that stands for serial time encoded amplified microscopy. The technology eliminates the problem of light sensitivity and speed of the shutter by using infrared lasers to bounce light off objects. The world’s fastest camera takes 6.1 million pictures in a single second — with a shutter speed of 440 trillionths of a second.
The STEAM camera does have limitations at this point of its development. The camera produces pictures composed of just 3,000 pixels compared to multimillion-pixel photographs produced by standard digital cameras. However, according to a recent article in Gizmodo, scientists claim a multi-mega-pixel STEAM camera is in the works.

The Cap Estel Hotel with it’s 7 deluxe rooms and 11 suites will offer a unique venue on the French Riviera. Catering for the individual guest as well as events, it will be an ideal location to organize weddings, family reunions, gala evenings product launches, photo shoots and could even be used as a set for filming. Under certain conditions the Cap Estel can be rented exclusively.
At the end of 19th century, a Russian prince constructed his Datcha at Eze on a 4 acre private peninsula located between Nice and Monaco. Around 1880 the Welsh writer James Walsh, banished by the British for his works considered too libertine, took procession of the premises.
At the beginning the 20th century, the property was owned by a Greek ship owner, the mother of Lapostolle and in 1936 a wealthy Lithuanian born American put down the foundations of the existing building paying his architect and his staff in gold coins. In the 1930’s with the threat of war looming, he returned to the United States leaving behind him the uncompleted building. When occupying the French Riviera, the German army took over the property and tore up the rosewood floors for heating fuel…
In the early 50’s Robert Squarchafichi opened a 6 bed-roomed hotel which was to be called the Cap Estel and after a few years he expanded the number into a 40 roomed luxurious establishment which started welcoming tourists from all over World. Very soon it was to become a popular meeting place for Royalty, politicians and show business celebrities such as the Emir d’Oman, Gorges Pompidou, André Dalraux, Joe Kennedy, the father of J.F. Kennedy, Sir Laurence Olivier, Catherine Deneuve, the Beatles, Jacques Brel, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Gina Lollobrigida …just to mention a few. Bought in November 2000 by private investors and after 3 years of meticulous restoration to it’s original splendor the Cap Estel reopened 2004.
The Cap Estel consists of the main building and one separate building, “La Corniche” and two bungalows “La Mer” and “Le Parc”. All the suites and rooms have either a balcony or a terrace and all with a sea view. Each building has it’s own style and all suites and rooms are equipped with state of the art technology. In addition there is a state of the art cinema seating 38 persons.

It is a Lamborghini like no other before it: a four-door sports car that sticks resolutely to its creed. The Lamborghini Estoque concept has everything that defines a Lamborghini: extreme, uncompromising and unmistakably Italian, iIt brings a whole new versatility to the brand’s DNA – with its four seats and ample luggage space, this ‘everyday sports car’ is a perfect fit for an equally versatile lifestyle.
Estoque is a study, a concept created specifically for the 2008 Salon d’Automobiles in Paris. From the very first glance there can be no doubt that this is a Lamborghini – a car with compelling presence, both unique and unmistakable. The long wheelbase, the low profile, the broad track, the mighty, accentuated wheels, the clean surfaces and razor-sharp definition – every single line breathes the spirit of the Lamborghini brand.
A new and unique elegance
The Estoque is an entirely new interpretation of the Sant’ Agata design ethic: it is a concept that provides a clear indication of the future. This applies to the new, elegant self-confidence of the lines themselves, but even more to the concept of the vehicle. The Estoque is the first sedan in the history of Automobili Lamborghini
, although ’sedan’ is more a reference to the number of doors than any other characteristics.. Even sports sedan is an inadequate classification: the Estoque establishes a new category of super sports sedans. With a powerful front mid-engine, permanent all-wheel drive and a sophisticated, precision-tuned chassis,; the Estoque boasts a unique technology package.
A sign of success
In Paris, the Lamborghini Estoque demonstrates the innovation, the creativity and the design flair of the Lamborghini brand, currently represented by the enormous success enjoyed by Lamborghini’s Gallardo and Murciélago super sports cars.
As a concept, the Lamborghini Estoque represents one of several possibilities for a third model series within the Lamborghini product line-up. At this point in time, no decisions have been taken in respect of either a third model series of any kind or of the Estoque concept in particular.
Of course, as a true Lamborghini, it goes without saying that the Estoque also bears a suitably powerful name with a rich heritage from the Spanish Corrida – bull fighting. The Estoque is a rapier (sword), approximately 90 centimetres (35.43 inches) long, used in a bull fight by the Matador.
The Concept
Estoque embodies the concept of a Lamborghini that is both a dedicated sports car and a relaxed Gran Turismo. As a sedan with four doors and four individual sports seats, it is a multi-faceted vehicle for multi-faceted lifestyles.

Lamborghini revealed its new Reventon super car at the Frankfurt auto show in 2007 and a week later in the U.S. at the Los Angeles Auto Show. By that time, most of the planned production units were already spoken for.
Based on the Murcielago sports car, the Reventon is said to be inspired by the F-22 Raptor fighter jet.
Recent reports indicate the car will cost nearly $1.6 million — significantly above the Murcielago $300,000 MSRP. In fact, anyone who wants the car has been asked to put down a deposit of nearly that amount.
The engine hood made of glass laminate with open ventilation slits offering a glimpse at the large 6.5-liter V12 engine. The Reventon delivers 650 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. Lamborghini will only build 20 Reventons, with all being spoken for. Eleven of the 20 cars will be U.S.-bound.
The headlights are powerful Bi-Xenon units. The daytime running lights consists of seven LEDs per side and a further nine diodes for the indicator and hazard lights. The taillights are also LED-based.
Created using Alcantara, carbon fiber, aluminum and leather, the interior is inspired by modern aircraft cockpits. Three LCD screens feature a variety of readouts useful to the driver. The instruments are housed in a structure milled from a solid aluminum block, protected by a carbon fiber casing.
The G-Force-Meter is also completely new: this display shows the dynamic drive forces, longitudinal acceleration during acceleration and braking, as well as transversal acceleration around bends. These forces are represented by the movement of an indicator on a graduated 3D grid depending on the direction and intensity of the acceleration. A similar instrument can be found in the airplanes. Formula One teams also use a similar device to analyze dynamic forces.

The goal of the design team from Raytheon that made the Hawker Horizon was not to design the fastest private jet, or the jet with the longest range, or the most economical mid-sized private jet. Their goal was to strike a balance between all of the things aircraft owners value: cabin size, speed, operating cost, and range. This goal was met in the Hawker Horizon, a private jet that is strong on all fronts.
The Hawker Horizon’s cabin can carry between eight and fourteen. It is 29.5 feet long, 6 feet high, and 6.5 feet wide. There is 110 cubic feet of baggage space available in an unpressurized external compartment. All of the typical amenities are available as well: a fully enclosed lavatory, appliances for hot and cold food preparation, and power plugs.
The Hawker Horizon is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW308A engines, which provide 6,900 pounds of thrust each on takeoff. They are similar to the PW305 engines used on the Hawker 1000, but produce more thrust, are more economical, and have better temperature margins than the 305s. They also have improved sealing, aerodynamic, and filtering (to prevent bacteria growth) properties than their predecessor.
The runway requirements for the Hawker Horizon are impressive for a private jet of its size. It can take off in 5,088 feet on a sea level runway, or in 7,598 feet on a runway at an elevation of 5,000 feet. It can climb directly to 41,000 feet in twenty minutes at its Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW) of 36,000 pounds. When loaded to its maximum fuel capacity, it can fly 3,570 miles (3,100 nautical miles) at a speed of .80 Mach.
For an optimum range cruise, the Hawker Horizon can fly at 430 knots at its maximum flight level of 45,000 feet. Its high speed cruise is 470 knots at 41,000 feet. The aircraft’s pressurization system is rated to 9.8 psi, meaning that the Hawker Horizon can maintain a 6,000 foot cabin altitude while flying at 45,000 feet.
Such fast speeds and short takeoff distances couldn’t be achieved with a heavy metal fuselage, so Raytheon opted to use composites for almost all Hawker Horizon’s components. Almost all of the Hawker Horizon’s production is automated and performed by Cincinnati Milicron’s “Viper” system. A seven-axis robot handles the assembly procedures, most notably the final smoothing process. The mandrel is wrapped in carbon fiber tape then placed inside a clamshell. Air is forced inside the shell during the drying process, resulting in a very smooth final shell. The composites used are extremely strong, light and thin — the fuselage is only one inch thick (by comparison, some aluminum fuselages are up to eight inches thick in vital places such as the door).
Other noteworthy features include the new anti-ice system and landing gear. The Hawker 1000 used a more complex KTS weeping-wing anti-ice system, but the Hawker Horizon returned to the more conventional bleed-air system for the main parts of the jet. A trailing link landing gear makes for smooth taxiing and landings, and a digital anti-skid system comes standard.
Raytheon selected the Honeywell Primus Epic Avionics Suite for use in the Hawker Horizon. It integrates and controls many of the vital functions of the aircraft. It comes standard with a GPS sensor, an FMZ-2000 FMS (Flight Management System), dual autothrottles, and dual automated flight control systems. Five 8 by 10 inch flat panel LCDs show all of the necessary flight information. Two serve as the primary flight displays, two as multi-function displays, and one as an EICAS (Engine Indication and Crew Alert System), which cycles through seven pages of systems information. The electronic system displays will allow the pilot to control all shown functions directly from the display.
Raytheon strikes a good balance between cabin size, range, speed, and economy in the Hawker Horizon. With an eight passenger cabin and transatlantic range, it still manages to reach speeds of 470 knots. The operating costs are reasonably low while other factors such as runway performance stay competitive.

In exclusive luxury watches with an automotive theme, the Azimuth Twin Barrel Tourbillon is a worthy newcomer. Still apparently in the testing phase (but expected to be available from June 2009 onward), this model–which Azimuth says is “not a watch, but a complex modern machine” stands out not just for an innovative mechanical movement, but a strikingly original titanium case which resembles a miniature Lamborghini Murcielago!
Looking at the extremely fresh Azimuth Twin Barrel Tourbillon, we can’t help but wonder if Urwerk had any role in the development of the exotic mechanical movement–with the avant garde time display with a large central arm and rotating hour satellites traveling over a minute scale at center stage, its hard not to think otherwise. Regardless of who was behind it, the engineering is extremely captivating, almost relegating the prestigious tourbillon escapement to a secondary attraction. Power reserve is a robust 5-days, thanks to two spring barrels.
The case of the Azimuth Tourbillon is really unlike anything else out there; sexy and sleek, it boasts carbon fiber elements and a double-domed sapphire crystal that is shaped like–naturally enough–a windscreen. Enthusiasts of Italian supercars could scarcely hope for a more suitable luxury timepiece!
