It’s the 29th of February 2008, the third leap year in
the new millennium. Cathay Pacific flight number CX 135 lands on
the beautiful runway of Tullamarine Airport on a misty morning at
7:30 am. I take a good look outside the window; all I see is
acres and acres of barren land. I thought to myself “no wonder
Australia is called the flattest and the driest continent on the

My name is Myrte (17) and I am a Dutch high school student
graduating next year. I do bilingual education which means that I
have had a lot of English. Every year we go on a trip in addition
to our education and this year everybody had to arrange their own
international work experience. So everybody had to find a host
family and a company they could work for in a foreign country.
When I started looking for an internship in November I wasn’t at
all considering that I could get out of Europe, but then the
opportunity came along to go to Australia and I was immediately
exited.

Tips how to cope better with it.
Schools in Australia encourage students to think critically and
be active in class. Often students are asked to speak up in
discussions and bring forward their opinion. Most courses will
have many interactive class discussions and group work. Don’t sit
back, get involved!
Besides writing essays or other written projects, you’ll
probably bump into assignments that require you to do a
presentation in class. You may feel less confident in presenting
when English is not your first language.
