One in five British men suffering from hair loss wish for ‘Jedward’ like hair rather than something more traditional, according to new research out today.

In a poll of 1,200 men, almost a quarter admired the X Factor finalists’ hair, who closely followed Twilight star and current man of the moment, Robert Pattinson, in taking the number one slot, with an impressive 26 per cent.

The survey to find the most sought-after male celebrity hairstyles was conducted by Optima Hair Specialists, who create bespoke advanced hair replacement systems for both men and women suffering from hair loss.

Reality stars John and Edward Grimes came second in the poll, beating David Beckham and Jungle Jordan’s ex  Peter Andre.

Peter Murtha, founder of Optima, said: In the past, we’ve found men have often opted for more conservative styles; however, attitudes certainly seem to be changing.

Men are realising that they can have a bit of fun with their hair and follow current celebrity styles. The trend is reflected in our customers, who are getting a lot braver with their requests.

Barack Obama conceded on Wednesday that he had lost a bit of weight and become somewhat greyer during his first year as US president, but said he remained healthy despite the relentless demands of the job.

"This has been an extraordinary year, less for me than for the American people: two wars, worst financial crisis since the Great Depression," Obama told NBC television.

"I would be lying if I said that, you know, those aren't some weighty questions that I carry around on my shoulders every day."

The lanky US leader said his recent apparent weight loss was in line with what has always been.
"My weight fluctuates by 30 pounds - it has for years," he said in a one of several interviews given shortly before leaving for Seoul, the last leg of his week-long Asia trip.

"I'm still wearing some of the same stuff I did when I got married 17 years ago," he said.

Lexington Intl, manufacturer of the HairMax LaserComb, was one of just 14 leading manufacturing exporting companies nationwide to receive the President's "E" Award, which recognizes successes in world markets and subsequent contributions to the U.S. economy.

Presented to Lexington at the U.S. Commerce Building in Washington earlier this month by U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke and Florida Senator George LeMieux, the President's "E" Award is the highest U.S. Government recognition any U.S. entity may receive for supporting export activity.

Traditionally, the award is presented by the U.S. President at the White House, however, scheduling conflicts prevented that from occurring this year.

The President's "E" Award was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to recognize persons, firms, or organizations that contribute significantly to increasing United States exports.

In presenting the awards, Secretary Locke said: "We're here today to honor the people, firms, and organizations that produce and promote U.S. goods and services that support American jobs, Trade has always been crucial to American prosperity.

A Chicago-based company that claims its combination of laser therapy and scalp treatments can regrow hair is being sued for allegedly making false statements based on unsubstantiated scientific claims.

Atty. Gen.Lisa Madigan filed a lawsuit Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court against Natural Hair Growth Institute, claiming the company has failed to provide consumers with full refunds for services that average between $8,000 and $12,000.

According to the suit, which also names owner Steve Bennis as a defendant, the Natural Hair Growth Institute provides laser therapy, scalp massage and topical hair products that it claims help regrow hair within six months. It also promises a 100 percent refund if consumers are not satisfied.

The company’s marketing materials claim the institute can closely determine the expected six-month outcome for each individual and it is the first effective hair growth program that guarantees to regrow your hair naturally, a release from Madigan's office said

Manjit Singh, a 59-year-old security consultant from Leicester, England known as the "Ironman," on Thursday pulled a double-decker bus weighing more than eight tonnes over a distance of 21.2 meters with his hair.

The new record was set in central London to coincide with the fifth annual Guinness World Records Day, which organizers said prompted thousands of people around the world to set some bizarre benchmarks of their own.

For Singh, his latest achievement makes up for the disappointment of 2007, when he failed to break the record for the furthest distance to pull a double-decker bus with the ears.

"I will never be discouraged by defeat, because I know that success can be waiting around the next corner," he said. "The only way to get there is to try again and stay positive."

Also in London, 112 commuters put aside their English rush-hour reserve to set a record for the most people hugging for a minute, while Shaun Jones won the title for the fastest hot water bottle burst at 18.81 seconds.

Little evidence exists to guide treatment of alopecia areata (AA). The current practices in treatment of children compared to adults and of progressive stages of hair loss are unknown.

The objective of this study was to examine the current practices of southeastern United States dermatologists for the treatment of AA.

Methods:
Dermatologists were sent anonymous questionnaires regarding their treatment practices by mail. Respondents'frequencies of treatment in children compared to adults and in patchy hair loss compared to widespread hair loss were compared with Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests and Friedman tests.

As a secondary source, the National Alopecia Areata Registry (NAAR) database was analyzed for patients'treatment histories.

White Cliffs Hair Studio, a Chicago hair replacement and hair loss solutions provider, has announced a live demonstration of the latest state-of-the-art nonsurgical hair replacement techniques for men and women.

The press and public are encouraged to attend in order to watch the process up close and personal with no smoke and no mirrors.

Chicago hair replacement provider, White Cliffs Hair Studio, plans to sponsor monthly demonstrations of their innovative nonsurgical hair replacement solutions that are available to both men and women suffering from virtually any hair loss condition.

The demonstrations, which will be performed in their Chicago hair replacement studio, will be arranged by appointment only and is open to the press and public.

According to Paul Sandor, owner and operator of White Cliffs’ Chicago hair replacement studio, believes the hair loss public remains uninformed of the advances in the art of nonsurgical hair replacement.
These aren’t the toupees that their parents and grandparents wore, said Sandor. The hair systems we’re producing are virtually undetectable to sight and touch.

One of the UK's leading cosmetic surgeons is calling for age restrictions on hair transplant surgery, after seeing an alarming rise in the number of teenage boys wanting to go under the knife.

Dr Bessam Farjo, co-founder of The Farjo Medical Centre and past President of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, has seen a 23 per cent increase in enquiries coming from men aged 20 years or under over the past 12 months.

Some of the enquiries the centre has received have come from the parents of boys as young as 16-years-old.

Dr Farjo explained: "Hair loss can be quite unpredictable in its early stages, with the full extent of loss difficult to determine in men under the age of 30.

Men under this age should consider taking preventative drugs such as propecia, in an effort to slow down or stop their hair loss. However, a few online sources and commercial clinics are encouraging very young men to consider surgery to restore both their follicles and self-esteem."

While many people are genetically predisposed to hair loss, it becomes increasingly common with age. In fact, Dr. Jaliman noted that everyone over age 40 has less hair than they did when they were younger - even if the hair does not appear thinner on the surface.

The most common form of hair loss that affects both men and women is androgenetic alopecia (often referred to as male-pattern hair loss or female-pattern hair loss).

In both genders, a miniaturization of the hair follicles occurs - meaning the hair stays on the head for a shorter period of time due to a short growth phase. As a result, a person will develop baby fine hairs that do not reach their full length or diameter.

In men, this results in a receding hair line or baldness on top of the scalp. However, in women, the frontal hairline is not affected but there is visible thinning over the crown and at the part.

Before starting any treatment for hair loss, Dr. Jaliman stressed that it is important for men and women to see a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and to rule out a potentially serious medical condition, such as lupus, thyroid disease or iron-deficiency anemia. Other causes of hair loss include drug reactions, birth control pills, menopause or a diet lacking in protein.

ModiFace, the Toronto virtual makeover company that has developed patent-pending systems for simulating the effects of virtual hairstyles, anti-aging treatments, weight-loss, and most recently a wide variety of cosmetics products, today is announcing a breakthrough in the simulation of virtual eyelashes, mascara, and hair simulation technology.

The new patent-pending technology, BrightLash(TM) , draws individual hairs on a user-uploaded photo with a look, texture, and color that matches real hair.

This technology, in development for nearly 2 years in ModiFace Labs, allows for very fine control of virtual eyelashes or hair, including length, texture, color, volume, as well as several other parameters.

"Until now, simulating mascara on a user-uploaded photo consisted of displaying a pre-generated template on the photo.

A foam formulation of the popular hair re-growth aid Rogaine is an effective treatment for hair loss in men and may be safer and easier to apply than the original liquid formulation, a researcher told Reuters Health.

Unlike Rogaine solution, "the foam formulation does not have propylene glycol, an agent that commonly causes irritation and occasionally causes an allergic contact dermatitis," said Dr. Elise A. Olsen, professor of medicine in the divisions of dermatology and oncology at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina.

"Many patients prefer a foam versus a solution that may drip on application to the scalp. The foam is not greasy or drying," she added.

In the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Olsen and a multicenter team of researchers report results of a clinical trial in which 315 men with hair loss were randomly assigned to foam versions of 5% minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine, or placebo.

After 16 weeks, hair counts in the target area were significantly greater in the 164 men applying Rogaine foam compared with the 151 men applying the placebo foam, the investigators report.

Hair growth is fastest from the age of sixteen to the late twenties. New hairs grow faster and the growth rate slows down with the increasing length (almost half the rate when the hair is over three feet long).

The average number of hairs on the scalp of an adult is 100,000. Blondes have more hairs with around 140,000 while redheads have the least with about 90,000.

It is no fallacy that on occasions, such as when you are frightened, your hair literally stands on end. Attached to the hair shaft are tiny muscles called the arrectores pilorum, or erect pili muscles that, as the name suggests, cause the hairs to become erect.

Under the influence of nervous excitation, these muscles contract and cause the hairs to which they are linked to become rigid. Similarly, when you are cold the goose-pimples you may experience are the result of the action of the arrectores pilorum.

Thus the hair is affected by the state of the nervous system and by the condition of the circulatory system. As such it is very much interrelated to the functioning of the entire human organism: body, mind and emotions. When you ponder on the opulence of the nerve and blood supply to the head, you will have no difficulty appreciating that whatever adversely affects them, will in the long term, be to the detriment of the hair.
