Over a two-year period, finasteride increased hair growth in all
four areas of the scalp affected by male pattern baldness and
reduced hair loss in two or more of these areas, depending on
patient age, according to research published online Feb. 13 in the
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Elise A. Olsen, M.D., of the Duke University Medical Center in
Durham, N.C., and colleagues conducted a randomized, double-blind,
multicenter study involving men with vertex hair loss who were
given finasteride (1 mg/d) or matching placebo for 24 months.
Men were divided into two groups based on age (18 to 41 and 41 to
60 years). Standard global photographic assessment of the vertex,
anterior/mid-scalp regions, and frontal and temporal hairlines were
used to determine the efficacy of finasteride in the treatment of
male pattern baldness.

Other than male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness,
people might also lose their locks with the turn of seasons,
cautions hair restoration specialist Dr Robert Leonard.
Known as ‘seasonal hair shedding’, this type of hair loss is not
progressive, meaning that you don’t have to press the panic button,
assures the medic.
According to Dr Leonard, seasonal hair loss occurs mostly in
mid-summer and winter and lasts for a couple of months. It can be
worse during the coldest months compared to summer, he notes.
Explaining the reasons behind the seasonal balding, the Rhode
Island-based doctor says the phenomenon can be likened to the
shedding of fur by animals in specific times of the year.

You've seen the commercials for traditional hair transplants and
the results look impressive. But the reality?
They call it the strip method where they actually cut a chunk of
your scalp up and then they got to sew it together which leaves you
with a big nasty scar, explains Roger Bassin, M.D., cosmetic
surgeon at The Bassin Center for Plastic Surgery .
But now there's a much easier, less painful option. It's called the
NeoGraft. First, a tiny tool is used to individually remove hairs
and follicles.
That is one millimeter that little punch and that heals overnight,
so you're left with no scarring, Dr. Bassin says.
Those hairs are prepped and then transplanted back into a patient's
problem areas.

With recent images of Jude Law emerging sporting a thinning barnet,
not to mention Prince William and Wayne Rooney who are well known
for their receding hair lines; male hair loss is becoming more and
more of a hot topic in the media.
Yet, unsurprisingly, it still doesn’t tend to feature as a topic of
conversation on most boys nights out; instead hair loss is still
considered a taboo subject amongst a significant number of males in
the UK.
Despite the subject finding its way onto front pages, proving that
even the young and famous can find themselves dealing with the
prospect of hair loss, a survey commissioned by REGAINE® for Men
Foam in the lead up to Valentine’s Day shows that British men are
20% more likely to worry about going bald than finding a long term
partner and 50% more likely to worry about hair loss than going
bankrupt.
Research reveals that 40% of men under 35 are already losing their
hair. Yet amazingly, 7 out of 10 men questioned in the survey
admitted they do not talk to their friends or partner about going
bald, and nearly a quarter of British men who were surveyed
admitted the reason that they don’t seek help or advice about hair
loss is because they simply don’t believe the treatments work.

More than 50 people have joined a lawsuit accusing the
manufacturers of drugs used to treat male pattern baldness of
failing to warn patients about dangerous side effects.
St. Louis resident Adam Keune and more than 50 other people from 22
other states filed the consolidated complaint Jan. 27 in St. Louis
Circuit Court against Merck & Co. Inc. and Merck Harpe &
The Dohme Corporation.
Attorneys Trent B. Miracle and Andrew S. Williams of the Simmons
firm in Alton and Timothy J. Becker and Michael K. Johnson, of
Minneapolis, are representing Keune and the complainants.
Each of the complainants say they or their husbands were prescribed
and took medication used to treat male pattern baldness. The
medications allegedly contained finasteride, an ingredient that
causes an "increased risk of persistent and/or serious and
dangerous side effects," the complaint reads. The complaint lists
those side effects as cognitive impairment, depression and various
forms of sexual dysfunction like erectile dysfunction, reduced
libido, reduced sensation and infertility. The side effects
allegedly continue even after a patient stops taking the
medication.

does it with a protein that mimics nature in reconstituting the
collagen and other supporting material in and around the hair
follicle. This revolutionary hair product which contains DPF with
Capixyl allows your hair to regrow fast, strong, and healthy.

Nonscarring alopecia differs from scarring alopecia on pathologic
examination by the preservation of follicular units and lack of
follicular dropout. However, long-standing cases of active
nonscarring hair loss can show follicular dropout on pathologic
examination and can be difficult to interpret.
We describe a patient with nonscarring alopecia that was
misdiagnosed as scarring alopecia due to difficulty in
distinguishing between scarred tracts (follicular dropout) and
long-persisting fibrovascular streamers. Polarized light microscopy
permits us to distinguish follicular scars from fibrous streamers
because the fibrous streamers are birefringent negative for
collagen.

Vin Diesel has embraced his baldness. And it's doubtful Michael
Stipe spends much time browsing for toupees. But not all of the 40
million American men with follicularly challenged scalps are going
quietly into that bald night. They're raging with
Rogaine, among other things.
Men who want to hang on to their hair have many options, including
medications and surgical transplants, says Dr. Marc Avram, hair
transplant surgeon and clinical professor of dermatology at
Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York City. The near future may
even bring treatments that can end baldness forever at
least for people willing to pay the price.
The war against baldness is already expensive. Just one hair
transplant operation can cost more than $10,000, or about $5 per
transplanted hair. The International Society of Hair Restoration
reports that surgeons performed more than 95,000 hair transplants
in 2010. Do the math — hairlines are a gold mine. In fact, the ISHR
estimates that men and women spend more than $1.8 billion each year
on hair loss treatments of all sorts.
