As expected, T-Mobile has announced the BlackBerry 8520. The latest BlackBerry Curve features an optical trackpad and not much else that the Curve 8900 already offers T-Mobile customers. I guess the media dedicated keys are cool and it’s certainly a first for the Waterloo-based telecoms granddad. Here’s what else you get for $130: a 2-megapixel camera, 256MB of RAM, 512Mhz processor, BT 2.0, Wi-Fi, and a 1GB microSD card (that’s it?!). BlackBerry Media Sync, which enables iTunes syncing sounds promising, but it still runs on EDGE.[...]
Ship photo by Eduardo Arcos Free Software Foundation (FSF) founder Richard Stallman published a statement last week expressing concern about the Swedish Pirate Party’s copyright reform platform. The party’s ambitious goals for copyright term reduction would blast holes in copyleft licensing, a serious blow to Stallman’s Free Software movement. The GNU General Public License (GPL), a widely-used open source software license that was originally written by Stallman, exploits fundamental characteristics of copyright law in order to guarantee that the freedoms granted by the license are extended to derivative works.[...]
It’s almost here! Blackberry’s first-ever fully-featured, native Apple support — finally — right out of the box is being offered in the new Blackberry 8520 smartphone that will be available to T-Mobile USA customers starting August 5. Also topping the new features list for the device is its touch-sensitive optical trackpad, which had been rumored for months to replace trackball found on other Blackberry devices. The integrated new Mac compatibility will get into gear in September, when the phone’s maker, Research in Motion, officially launches the long-awaited Blackberry for Mac desktop software that promises to make life easier for Mac-loving Blackberry users.[...]
Scout Labs, a SaaS dashboard that makes it easy to keep track of what people across the internet are saying about particular topics or brands, has added a new focus group-like feature that is worth a look. The product, which we first reviewed in December 2007 while still in private beta, now includes a “Quotes” section which pulls in real-time quotes from people who are chattering or Tweeting about a brand or topic on the web. The feature scans the quote for sentiment, and breaks quotes down by positive, negative or neutral undertones.[...]
Finally combining my love of gardening and my need to slaughter the undead, Plants vs. Zombies is a unique tower defense game from PopCap Games. In Plants vs. Zombies, you’re a home owner with a zombie problem. And yet another oft-leaked BlackBerry has become official as Research In Motion has finally announced the BlackBerry Curve 8520. Heading to T-Mobile USA and Vodafone UK in August, the BlackBerry 8520 is RIM’s latest attempt at luring in the average consumer to its line of smartphones with a very budget friendly price. In the UK, Vodafone UK subscribers should be able to get the 8520 at no charge provided they take on a contract with a monthly tariff of £25 or more (considerably cheaper than the average BlackBerry plan) while in the USA T-Mobile clients will have to wait a bit longer to find out just how much it is that they’ll be asked to pay.[...]
And here you were thinking Mercedes-Benz’s Attention Assist system was the thing in driver alertness aides. In a rather odd, nearly jocose press release, Nissan has revived our faith in corporate R&D with the glorious introduction of the Forest AC. In short, this new air conditioning system “systematically controls cabin temperature, ventilation, aroma and humidity to create an optimal interior environment.” Still bewildered? It means that the system can tap into an array of sensors in order to find out exactly what environment is best for your current state of mind, and if it needs to, it’ll blast your nostrils with gusts of fresh forest in order to increase alertness while keeping stress levels down.[...]
