Prevent Windows 7 from automatically contacting Microsoft or
prompting you to contact Microsoft whenever a software / hardware /
operating system error or problem is detected.
Depending on your
Windows 7 configuration, whenever a problem or error
is detected in software, hardware, or the operating system, a
problem report may be sent to Microsoft. This way, if solutions are
later available such as an updated hardware driver, you will be
notified and possibly provided a download link.
For various reasons including privacy concerns, you may not wish
this automatic or prompted sending of information to occur. To

If a svchost.exe image is using a lot of memory or CPU time,
view its related services to help diagnose problems.
The
Windows 7 Task Manager is useful to manage
processes and services, check the CPU and networking usage, and
shut down stuck programs that don't want to end. While using this
tool, you may have noted many svchost.exe processes that act as
Host Process for Windows Services. Curious about which services are
related to which processes, especially if one is running amok,
taking a lot of memory and/or CPU time?
1. In the "Processes" tab of the "Windows Task Manager",
right-click a svchost.exe process....

Several ways you can make a seemingly-hidden or off-screen
Windows 7 application or window appear in view.
In
Windows 7, have you ever opened an application or
window, seen it appear in the Taskbar, yet the window or
application is not visible on the Desktop?
Due to a mis-configuration, switching of screen resolutions, or
switching back and forth between using multiple monitors, it is
possible for a window / application to appear at a location not
currently visible on your Desktop. In
Windows XP,
right-clicking on a window's Taskbar icon opened a
menu that you could use to move it back. However, in Windows 7,
right-clicking on these Taskbar icons do not pull up such menus.
Thus, how can you make the windows / applications visible
again?...

To prevent a crash in one Explorer folder from taking down other
folders and the Desktop, open folders in a separate process in
Windows 7.
Normally when you open folders in
Windows 7 via Windows Explorer, the folders are all
opened in the same explorer.exe process. While this reduces memory
usage, if one folder causes a crash or if Explorer hangs and you
have to manually kill the process, all folders will crash and
close. Plus, you may lose your desktop icons and the Taskbar.
Though this should not normally occur, using many context-menu
extensions, memory or hard drive problems, and other issues may
cause crashes, and they may occur seemingly-randomly.
Having this all close simultaneously can be a nuisance. Thus you
can open folders in a new explorer.exe process on a case-by-case
basis (useful if opening a particular folder always causes a
crash), or force all folders to open as a new process. ...

If Windows 7 fails with a Blue Screen, prevent the system from
automatically restarting so you can view debug information.
If
Windows 7 fails and displays a Blue Screen (possibly
due to a driver error), this includes some debug information. More
detail in a kernel memory dump is written to the system hard drive,
and then the machine reboots.
While servers for the most part need to automatically reboot upon
system failure so they can more quickly restart and handle
requests, desktop computer users may not need this functionality.
By reading the on-screen debug data and using search engines or
posting it to forums, the cause of the critical restart may be
found and in some cases fixed. ...

When creating selection rectangles on the Windows 7 Desktop,
configure whether to show a dotted or translucent selection
rectangle.
Depending on your configuration, when you select multiple icons on
the
Windows 7 Desktop by creating a selection
rectangle, such as to copy or move multiple icons to a folder, the
rectangle appears translucent. Some people may find this easier to
see than the old style selection rectangle that just appears as a
dotted outline.
Depending on your graphics drivers, system configuration, or
personal preference, you may wish to toggle between viewing the
translucent rectangle or the dotted rectangle. You can make the
change by doing the following:...

Add the time, date, or even your name to printed web page
headers and footers from Internet Explorer 8.
By default, when printing webpages from
Internet Explorer 8, the hard copies have a header
containing the page title and page # of total pages. Footers
containing the web address URL and date in a short format are
printed as well.
If you print many pages, you may want more information on the
printouts including the time. If you share a network printer,
perhaps you may want to label printouts with your name in the
header or footer as well. To make these changes, do the
following:...
