Going to the Horse's Mouth

People often act as if search engine optimization is a great mystery. It's all shadows and guesswork, secret formulas and black hat subterfuge.

Hey, SEO does have its share of mystery. The Google algorithm is locked up tighter than Colonel Sanders' fried chicken recipe and there are certain clues that Google spokespeople refuse to give up.

However, the bulk of SEO is fairly easy to understand. Search engines exist (and profit) because people can use them to find information. If they don't provide good results, people won't use them.

So, the goal is good results. What does that tell you?

It should tell you that you probably ought to work on building a good site with solid information that answers real questions, right?

Obviously, there's more to making it work than that. It's not as simple as doing something well. There are levels of complication, best practices and many other considerations in play.

But, fortunately, most of the key questions beyond that are answered by the people at Google. Read Matt Cutts' blog and the comments of other Google staffers. Read their webmaster guidelines. You can get the lowdown on high ranking, in large measure, straight from the horse's mouth.

Should You Build Your Static Site with Wordpress

Wordpress is a blogging platform. If you're not blogging, you don't need to use Wordpress, right?

Not necessarily. Although Wordpress may be primarily used for blogging, it's actually a feature-rich content management system. It can make site maintenance and the uploading of new content incredibly easy via its intuitive and flexible back-end administration panel. The tool is also supported by a huge and dedicated user base, making it a constantly evolving and improving piece of software.

Even those who recognize that fact often stray away from using Wordpress for their VRE sites because they want the look and feel of a traditional static website. What they might not know is that themese are available to make Wordpress into a dead ringer for a static site while maintaining all of the “under the hood” content management value the platform offers.

Search engine friendly, easy to use, designed to handle regular content updates... It sounds like the perfect VRE site builder, doesn't it? Well, it just might be. Especially for those who aren't accustomed to working with other forms of CMS, Wordpress can be a great way to build a traditional-looking VRE website.

It may not be the best system for every need and there are a few workarounds one must use in order to get Wordpress ready to serve as a VRE creator, but overall its a compelling choice.
