London franchisees KKJ Ltd. are MBE’s current "Franchise of the Year", in recognition of their progress and success. The award was presented to two of KKJ’s directors attending MBE’s annual conference, business partners and brothers-in-law, Murli Mulchandani and Rikesh Nichani.
MBE’s recruitment consultant, Chris Gillam said: “This award celebrates KKJ’s business acumen and also recognises the contribution that Murli and Rikesh have made to overall growth and success of MBE in the UK and Ireland.”
The award winning franchisees were chosen from MBE’s network of over 100 High Street “one-stop-shops” across the UK and Ireland. MBE in the UK is part of a global network of almost 6,000 outlets.
Unique in UK franchising, MBE offers local companies and members of the public a wide range of quick, easy and cost-effective business services that include parcels packing and delivery all over the world, mailbox rental, digital copying, document finishing services, stationery, office supplies and on-line facilities.
Murli and Rikesh opened their first franchise in January 2002 in an unusual location – inside an internet café in The Strand. A year later they opened a second outlet in Shepherds Market, Mayfair and they are now looking for a site for a third London centre.
Murli and Rikesh commented: “We are very happy to receive this award and we would like to say thank you to MBE for all their support. We hope the network will continue to go from strength to strength and we look forward to being part of that growth.”
Before joining MBE, Murli headed a company that imported and distributed children’s wear and Rikesh worked in the IT industry. They were looking for a business where they could work together and favoured franchising because it is a safer route to self-employment than starting a venture from scratch.
They visited a franchise exhibition in London to see what was offer and to meet franchisors face-to-face. “There were many different opportunities but none really appealed until we met MBE,” Murli said. “We particularly liked the combination and variety of MBE’s different services and also we struck a real rapport with the people we met. We knew that MBE’s services meet a genuine need and since we opened our first centre we have discovered that the demand is escalating, especially for courier services and mailbox rental,” Murli continued.

From Beer Buddies to Business Partners

Information on Ethnic Franchise Opportunities at WhichFranchise.com
Sandip Chauham and Ketan Patel from Leicester became close “beer buddies” after moving into the same halls of residence at Nottingham Trent University.
After starting full time employment, Armadip (an initial 3rd partner), Sandip and Ket realised their priorities needed to change, not least to repay their student loans. This realisation gradually led them to develop burning ambitions to become successful businessmen.
A family wedding in the USA dramatically altered Ket & Sandip’s lives. They were introduced to the concept of franchising by Ket’s brother who had recently invested in a “Subway” franchise and was achieving great success. To pursue this opportunity, Amardip, Ket and Sandip considered emigrating. However, after much deliberation and taking into account a poor exchange rate, the inspired trio decided instead to research possible franchise business ventures within the UK.
After six months of detailed research, Armadip, Sandip and Ket were attracted to the Jani King concept.. Following an initial enquiry, the entrepreneurs were further impressed with the Jani King business model and the 10% margin realignment offered to franchisees. Consequently, their confidence in the Jani King franchise system quickly grew.
After a number of meetings with Jani King’s Paul Haworth, the trio examined all the potential challenges they might face, such as “Will we make this franchise into a successful business?” After considering various business scenarios and tactics, the trio were confident that, with hard work, they could make the franchise a success.
On 7th July 2004, Armadip, Sandip and Ket invested in a Jani King cleaning franchise, naming their new business: “ASK Consultants Ltd”. Following the initial training course, ASK Consultants Ltd started its first account on 1st October 2004 and the three budding entrepreneurs rolled up their sleeves undertaking some of the cleaning work themselves.
While confident that their new franchise business would succeed, Armadip, Ket and Sandip worked through a fairly slow start with a few transfers of accounts from other franchisees. This was not the start they wanted, so they decided to grow the business by selling themselves and carrying out specialist jobs such as “strip and seal” of wooden floors. ASK Consultants Ltd received ongoing support from Jani King’s training manager and this enabled the franchise to convert work demos into contracts.
The hands-on experience gave ASK Consultants Ltd a valuable insight into their customers’ expectations. Further new business followed. Ket recalls “After cleaning a pub in Leicester, the landlady mentioned her flat needed decorating. Of course, we jumped at the chance for the extra work and before we knew it, we were tiling her bathroom and painting the lounge - I don’t remember this being in our business plan!!”
Within four months, they received a major breakthrough when Jani King offered ASK Consultants the opportunity to service accounts for retailer Superdrug. By March 2005, the franchise still in its initial stage of growth, was turning over approximately £6,000 per month. Ket and Sandip then jumped at the opportunity for additional cleaning contracts in the Coventry area and within one month their turnover had grown to £22,000.
In November 2005, Armadip exited the franchise due to personal reasons. Ket and Sandip remained focused on their franchise and followed the implementation plan provided by Jani King to steadily grow their business and achieve success.
In November 2005, an opportunity to clean an Odeon cinema in Sheffield became available. There was an underlying concern that they were taking on too many accounts but, in true ASK Consultants style, the ‘can do’ attitude resulted in a further increase in turnover to £34,000 per month. This success provided a massive confidence boost to Ket and Sandip and motivated them to work even harder.
Ket and Sandip have put their business success down to the simple Jani King philosophy that ‘seeing is believing’. Sandip says: “You need to ensure that the customer sees that they are receiving a service which provides good value and good quality.”
Sandip and Ket are the proud owners of a large Jani King franchise region which includes Leicester, Warwick, Northampton, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Norwich, Ipswich, Leeds, Doncaster and Sheffield. Splitting the region between them, Ket and Sandip work to ensure a high quality service is provided for all clients. With Ket having formerly worked in Customer Relations, and Sandip a former accountant; they have an ideal combination of skills for a successful business partnership.
In January 2007, Ket and Sandip collected two new BMW convertibles as self recognition of their hard work, although Ket is somewhat disappointed he couldn’t obtain insurance for the M3 Sports model!
Sandip and Ket are now proud that their customer portfolio consists of leading retailers and leisure groups including Odeon, Tenpin, River Island, Esporta, Superdrug and HMV. In total, ASK Consultants have 84 customers and, when recently taking over an additional “Next” account, their annual turnover reached the magic one million pounds!
Ket comments: “Now that we have reached the £1 million mark, the £2 million mark is our next goal and we aim to reach this a little quicker now that we have our structure in place. We plan to maintain the level of growth with all the challenges involved. We hope to continue our success and grow our Jani King franchise business indefinitely!!”
The Flexibility of Franchising

Information on Ethnic Franchise Opportunities at WhichFranchise.com
X-Press Legal Services Ltd is a specialist franchise that provides property searches and reports, working on behalf of solicitors, conveyancing professionals and specialist HIP providers. The searches and reports are a vital part of the property buying process in the UK.
“Franchising has enabled me to realise my ambition to have my own business and also allows me to manage my time effectively to achieve a good work-life balance,” says Manjit Panesar, X-Press Legal Services franchisee covering a large area of West London and parts of Middlesex.
After leaving university with a degree in computer science systems, Manjit was dismayed to find there were no jobs. “It was 1991 and there was a recession. I gave up counting how many CVs I sent out when it went beyond 600!,” he explained. “I got a job as a civil servant before becoming a partner in a D-I-Y shop, a loss-making business that I turned round into a profitable one before selling it on. Using this experience, I moved on to join my dad and brothers in a plumbing and heating shop.
“But what I really wanted was my own business. I also wanted to move out of the retail sector and do something different, ideally home-based to give some flexibility in the working pattern and enable me to spend more time with my family,” he continued.
With these priorities in mind, Manjit considered his options before deciding that franchising offered the safest route to achieving his goals. He commented: “What appealed to me the most was the fact that franchising offers a ready-made proven business model, with working processes and systems already in place. I didn’t want to start a new venture from scratch as I was aware of the initial set costs of a new business, with its associated risks.”
He began some very thorough research into franchising, approaching it with careful thought, after identifying his own priorities and what he expected from a franchise. He gathered information about all the franchises that matched his own criteria and then reviewed their details to produce a short-list of companies to contact, some of whom he visited at the Birmingham franchise exhibition in October 2007.
He met X-Press Legal at this show and shortly afterwards decided that this was the business he wanted to become part of. Manjit said: “X-Press offered just about everything I was looking for. It was an exciting new challenge but with start-up costs within my means. I did not need any additional qualifications and their training covered all elements of the business.
“The other big attraction is that I could work from home and have greater flexibility than I had ever had before. Since setting up my office I have discovered that managing my own time is brilliant and I can see more of my wife and three lively little boys.
Card Connection Welcome New Franchisees

Leading greeting card publisher and franchisor, Card Connection, has today announced the two latest recruits to its greeting card franchise operation as Kuljit Jandoo who is taking over the Dartford/Gravesend territory and Bal Pardesi who is buying the Maidstone/Chatham area. Kuljit and Bal join more than 100 Card Connection franchisees in the UK and Ireland.
“Established since 1992, Card Connection is a reputable company with a proven track record,” confirms Robina Every, sales and marketing director of Card Connection. “As new franchisees are buying an already existing business they make a profit from day one. As a result, Card Connection franchises always tend to attract a lot of interest.
“These days there is an extensive choice of franchises available on the market,” she continues. “However, those like Card Connection, with existing national customers, quality products and realistic, demonstrable income opportunities are the ones that get snapped up quickly.”
Card Connection’s network of more than 100 franchisees specialise in supplying greeting cards on a consignment basis to over 16,000 retail outlets countrywide.
Because the franchise networks in the UK and Ireland are complete, the available opportunities now consist of acquiring an already-established territory from an existing franchisee. These vary in price according to their level of development, but start at £20,000 (+ stock) with earnings potential in excess of £50,000 per annum.
“On the open market it would be difficult to purchase an ordinary business with such proven revenue potential for £20,000 (+ stock),” continues Every. “Our franchises have the added benefit of comprehensive training, support and back-up as well as the opportunity through Card Connection’s network of national accounts including, Londis, Budgens and Shell in addition to the chance to sell a product of un-paralleled quality. We believe this is why Card Connection’s franchises have remained in such popular demand over the years.”
Lloyds TSB Launches Banking for Muslim Businesses

Thousands of Muslim businesses across Britain will be able to bank according to their faith from today, as Lloyds TSB launches the first high street Islamic business account in the country. The account, which complies with Islamic law (Shariah), is available across the bank's 2,000 branches, and will be open to the UK's estimated 100,000 Muslim firms.
The new Islamic Business and Corporate account1is the latest addition to a range of Islamic banking services for Muslims offered by Lloyds TSB. Last year, following research that showed three quarters of the UK's Muslim population were interested in Islamic financial services, the bank launched a series of Shariah compliant products, including an Islamic current account, student account, mortgage and investment fund.
Islamic law states that businesses, as well as individuals, should not pay or receive interest. The rules also say that individuals and businesses can only invest in certain companies, prohibiting dealings in industries such as gambling or alcohol. In order to ensure that the account is fully compliant with Islamic law, Lloyds TSB has consulted with its board of renowned Islamic scholars*.
Richard Holden, Head of Franchising said "Muslim businesses are making an increasingly valuable contribution to the franchising sector and the revenue to the UK economy. The launch of our new account ensures entrepreneurs can bank according to their faith and encourages enterprise within the UK's Muslim population."
Truett Tate, Group Executive Director, Wholesale & International Banking, said: "The entrepreneurial spirit in the UK is truly something to be proud of, and Muslim businesses are making a phenomenal contribution to this through their creativity and incredible work ethic.
"Britain is rapidly establishing itself as a centre of Islamic finance, and Lloyds TSB has been at the forefront of this growth. By introducing an account for businesses, we're consolidating our position as the UK's leading provider of Islamic financial services and making it possible for Britain's Muslim businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs to bank according to their principles."
Shazia Saleem, 22, a British Muslim entrepreneur who is establishing her own Halal food business, said: "It means a lot to me that I now have the option of banking in line with my faith. Islam is a way of life for me and I know that once I have got my business off the ground it is going to be a huge part of my life, so is important that I am comfortable with every aspect of the way it is run.
"Until now aspiring Muslim entrepreneurs have had limited choices when it comes to financing their business ideas and I know this has held some people back. It's great that a high street bank is offering an account that meets both my religious and business needs. I am sure this will encourage other Muslims to put their business ideas into action."
The launch of the Islamic Business and Corporate account establishes Lloyds TSB as the largest provider of Islamic banking across the UK. Customers will be able to make use of the bank's 2,000 branches and 4,000 Cashpoint machines, as well as Internet and telephone services. They will also have access to a named relationship manager.

Recent years have seen the types of retail businesses traditionally dominated by ethnic minorities significantly decline in number. One reason is that many people, especially those in the British Asian community, are moving away from traditional inherited family business formats and are looking instead for new ways to become successful entrepreneurs.
For some, franchising is an ideal option, providing a safer route to business with less chance of failure than an independent start-up. Indeed, last year 14% of the UK franchise community came from ethnic minority backgrounds.
Andy Hirst, Franchise Sales Manager at Domino's Pizza comments, "Anyone who combines a strong work ethic with a willingness to learn and an enterprising spirit is well-positioned to become very a successful franchisee. In our experience, entrepreneurs from ethnic minorities often have the added bonus of support from their wider family or community networks, providing an extremely solid foundation upon which to expand and take the business forward.
Arshad (36) is a British-born Pakistani who began his career at Domino's 18 years ago as a delivery driver in Luton. Today, he is a successful franchisee of three Domino's stores and has plans for further expansion in the future.
Arshad comments, "Even at a young age my goal in life was to run my own business and reap the rewards of my hard work and dedication. Whilst anyone has the potential to become a successful entrepreneur, my background certainly brought some advantages. My family network in particular has always been supportive and in return I've been able to give many of them opportunities to work with me. Knowing that I have such trusted individuals in place allows me to think about the wider business picture and the possibility of opening even more stores.
"In addition I couldn't have achieved what I have without being part of a franchise network - benefiting from industry-leading training and support from 'technology to brand'. Taking advantage of this and adding my own mix of hard work, ideas and local knowledge means I've realised my dreams, achieving more than I ever thought possible. I remain as committed as ever and am intent on building my business with plans already in place to try and open a fifth store later this year. My advice to anyone thinking about franchising, and in particular Domino's, is to go for it!"
