Hello again everyone and welcome to the September 17, 2009 edition of the Weightloss Help Blog Carnival!  I held off a week for accepting submissions so I could really bring you a nice one.  This edition covers some really cool topics including the latest in iPhone apps to help you lose weight and also how fitness and exercise can effect your sex life!

Eric presents Colon Cleansers posted at Colon Cleansers. Colon cleansing only became popular in the United States in the 1920s-30s. As the health benefits proclaimed by such colon cleaners were not medically proven back then, its popularity weaned as time goes by. In recent years however, it seemed to have gained back its hay days.

Andy presents Recovery from Binge Eating posted at test, saying, “Another night another binge. Your stomach is so full that it’s aching. When is it ever gonna end? That’s it, you are sick of this cycle of binging and dieting. You make a commitment to never binge again. But you remember that you made that promise last”

Shannon Wills presents 50 iPhone Apps That Will Make You Much Healthier posted at Physical Therapy Assistant Schools. Those who have an iPhone, or even iPod Touch, know that they are capable of doing just about everything from organizing your finances to maintaining your home. Go the extra step and take care of yourself in food, workouts, mental health, and more by having a look at these 50 iPhone apps that will make you much healthier.

Alan Overton presents How To Balance Starting Swiss Ball Exercises | Lifetime Fitness 4 Men posted at Lifetime Fitness 4 Men, saying, “When first performing Swiss ball exercises, you may experience problems keeping your balance. The very effort of trying to balance works your stomach muscles and that, in turn, helps you to lose belly fat. As you practice exercise ball exercises, your balance will improve, but then maintaining your balance will also keep your stomach muscles engaged.”

FitJerk presents Improving Your Sex Life Through Fitness & Exercise posted at FlawlessFitness, saying, “A healthy sex life is important to everyone, but are you getting the most out of it that you can? If you aren’t, there here are some tips and special exercises to help you spice things up in the bedroom!”

Wenchypoo presents Updated: Don’t Take This With a Grain of Salt (L-O-N-G) posted at Wisdom From Wenchypoo’s Mental Wastebasket. We have a “new” 500 to be aware of, and it has nothing at all to do with racing. This has to do with salt intake. The wool has been pulled over our eyes yet again with nutritional advice beaten into us like a drum—the typical recommendation of 2350 mg. salt per day, you know, the 1 teaspoon allowance that we all exceed regularly without even realizing it.

Andy presents Binge Eating Disorder Recovery Tip posted at test, saying, “Are you sick of overeating? Your late night eating? Do you want to jump on the path to recovery from binge eating disorder yet you don’t know where to start?”

Jason Chen presents South Beach Diet Book Review on 20bmi.com posted at 20bmi.com. Cardiologist Dr. Agatson’s South Beach Diet book is a New York Times Best Seller, both because of its nutritional advice and the popularity of the low carb diets which were made popular by earlier work by another cardiologist, Dr. Atkins. Dr. Agatson’s advice is similar to that of the “traditional low carb” diet but at the same time, it is a little different.

Kyle Wood presents 7 Fitness Tips For Achieving Your Fitness Lifestyle posted at Kyle’s Fitness Facts. One thing I see far too many people do is just grind away at the same training style day after day. This is often due to a lack of knowledge in training methods.

Tony presents High Protein Diets posted at Health Fitness Article Directory, saying, “My husband and I have been on high protein diets for over 5 years. During this time we have been able to keep our weight under control as well as his “pre diabetes” under control. For most of our meals we eat chicken, steak, eggs, pork, fish, or shrimp. We try to avoid pastas and breads as well as any other high carb food.”

Carolyn Friedman presents 100 Terrific Tools to Lose Weight & Stay in Shape without a Gym Membership posted at Nurse Practitioner Schools. It always starts with good intentions. You finally go to the gym to start a membership. You plunk down your hard earned cash for a sign-up fee and obligate your self to a year-long, no escape, contract. Don’t waste your money! Read this article on how to get in shape without gym memberships

Well that’s it for this week.  Be sure to keep an eye out for our next edition of the weightloss help blog carnival.  I hope that you found these articles useful, I know I did!  Take care everyone and don’t forget to follow weightloss helps on twitter!

How would you like to lose weight and feel better without having to eat typical, boring meals and spending countless hours at your local gym?  If you would then here are three easy was to lose weight fast!  After you read this, you will see just has easy weight loss can be!

Get Rid of Hunger

When losing weight it is vital that you get rid of your hunger cravings.  If you constantly fee hungry, then you will always want to eat which will almost kill your chances of successfully losing weight.  Look for foods that keep you full for long periods of time.  These are fiber-rich foods such as lentils, legumes, nuts, apples, peas, and etc.  These are not only tasty but they will also help you keep a healthy digestive system!

Drink More Water

Did you know that you can lose at least 7-10 extra pounds just by drinking the correct amounts of water?  When you do not drink enough, you body will store water inside you.  You body will not store water like this if it feels there is plenty coming in on a regular basis.  You should drink at least eight glasses a day for this to work.

I have found that people managed to lose a minimum of seven pounds once they started drinking more water! Once your body gets water regularly, it will stop hoarding water and flush out any excess water that it has stored!

This is just one of the benefits water offers.  It will also boost you body’s metabolic rate, which will help you burn fat and helps you lose weight.  Water is also great for detoxifying your body.  Once you rid your body of toxins you will not only lose s few extra pounds, you will feel better as well!

Hula Hooping

Hula Hooping is a fun way to lose weight without exercise in the standard fashion.  The only thing you will need is a cheap hula hoop from your local dollar store and your set.  Just use it for at least one minute at a time.  Work this is for  ten minutes everyday but if you cannot then do not worry, just use it when you have a spare moment.  This is a fun way to fit in some much needed exercise!  Not all exercise programs require exercise but anytime you can get up and move your body, your weight loss results will be much greater.

See there!  Weight loss doesn’t have to be a boring and rigorous process!  Follow these three quick weight loss tips above and watch just how easily you can shed a few extra pounds!

Are you thinking of following a low calorie diet plan to help you lose weight?  Before you make your decision, take a quick moment to read this article.

Low calorie diets used to be all the rage about a year ago.  Since then the fad has died down some but there are still many of them out there.  I have witness countless stories of real people that tried these diets only to give up because they were not seeing the weight loss results they had hoped for.

There are a couple of reasons these low calorie diets do not work.  Perhaps the number one reason is when you eat lower calorie foods, your body essentially is being undernourished.  You will often feel fatigued and sometimes sickly.  These diets leave you very little energy to to anything, let alone exercise!  The cause of this is that your bodies metabolic rate is now running low.

If you are looking to lose weight successfully, you really need to think about these following two points:

Calories Are Not Your Enemy!

Calories themselves are not something you should avoid.  Calories are what your body derives its energy source from.  Eating the correct foods will boost your body’s natural metabolic rate burning those excess pounds and help you lose weight.

It is not rocket science.  Basically, all you need to do is separate the “good” calories from the “bad.”  The bad calories are found in the obvious places, junk foods.  Think about this.  You will not gain weight by eating 10 apples a day even though an apple typically contains around 100 calories, however, you will gain weight if you eat 10 hamburgers.

It seems too simple but it’s honestly just that easy.  You will help yourself greatly by focusing on finding the foods that consist of negative calories.  That may sound strange but “negative calories” does not mean there isn’t any contained within the food.  Instead, it means that in order to digest these foods, your body must burn more calories than are contained in these food items themselves.

Focus On Your Muscles

Now this isn’t a strength and resistance training section.  It simply means that you need to think about your bodies muscles when you are losing weight.  In order for your muscles to maintain themselves they need to burn a lot of calories.  So, the more muscles you have, the more calories that you will burn.  For building them up, you need to focus on protein-rich foods.

You do not have to be going for a super ripped stomach and what not to take advantage of this.  Simple getting up and doing some simple exercises will help you lose weight tremendously.  If you are really into exercise then I recommend joining your local gym.  If you check around you can find some really cheap places to work out.  If you prefer to do some exercises on your own you can always just do them at home.  One really fun way is to stop by your local dvd store and find some fitness videos that spark your interest.

How Does This Relate To Low Calorie Diets?

The reason I mentioned the muscles section is that low calorie diets will reverse your muscle mass.  While on one of these diets you will be unable to maintain your strength and gradually lose it so this is just one more reason low calorie diets are not a good idea.

The truth be known, low calorie diets result in water weight loss and muscle density.  Can you lose a few pounds this way?  Sure.  Is is a good idea?  No..  There are many other healthier ways to lose weight than low calorie diets so watch out and keep these tips in mind!

Take Care All!

howtoreleasestress

Today, I want to share some techniques I use frequently on how to release stress. First of all, what is stress? Stress is purely a mental problem. When the mind goes haywire, then the rest of your body will also do the same. You will become emotionally unstable when you’re under the throes of stress and you will mostly likely feel the effects on your body, like muscle cramps, headache, and the inability to lose weight quickly. It is important that a person learn how to release stress to get rid of it before it becomes a permanent problem.

Meditation is one of the most powerful techniques in learning how to release stress. Someone who is overcome with problems is likely to find their personal, as well as, professional life, in a downward spiral. Meditation techniques help a person achieve a calm state of mind without having to resort to drugs or relaxation tools and implements. Every step to meditation is done within the mind.

Here are some beginner steps that will teach you how to release stress:

Step #1: Find A Quiet Place

If it’s your first time meditating, then make sure that you won’t get distracted with the noise in your surroundings. Lock your room or tell everyone that you don’t want to be disturbed.  When you close your eyes, your sense of hearing will be twice as good so it is quite possible to hear almost anything in your surroundings that will make it hard for you to concentrate.

Step 2: Get Into Position

Start by looking for a spot where you can sit down and relax. The aim here is not to sleep, and it is a guarantee that you will immediately fall off to sleep if your mind reaches a relaxed state. However, this is not a “how to fall asleep” article, it’s a “how to release stress” article; so stay awake! To keep this from happening you can either sit in the classic lotus position or find a chair to sit in. Make sure that your back is straight and your hands are relaxed on the armrest or on your lap.

Step 3: Breath properly

You can’t learn how to release stress and meditate properly without proper breathing. You need to inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. This way, you can come up with a rhythm that you can easily focus on. Also, the amount of oxygen in your body will be enough to keep you relaxed. Keep practicing your breathing technique until you can do it easily without having to think about it.

Step 4: It’s All About Focus

Once you are to this phase you will begin to see random images in your mind. These are most of the time events that have happened during the day and problems that may be bothering you.  This is perfectly normal and the object here is to look at the images but do not focus on them. Concentrate and let the random thoughts fill your head. Observe each thought calmly as if you are watching a movie. If a stressful scene appears, try your best not to focus on it. Keep doing this until you reach the point when your mind becomes blank.

This is the point of peace. This is how to release stress from your everyday life. Your mind has been cleared and you are free to do what you wish with the remaining time.  You can either just enjoy the tranquilness or resolve a problem.  If you wish to resolve a problem, remember to look at it but do not become emotionally attached to it and only observe it as it passes by. This might sound hard at first but it will come naturally with practice.  You will eventually find a solution to your problem while not even noticing it.

Remember that learning how to release stress with meditation is not a one shot deal. It is almost impossible to attain a calm state of mind in just a matter of a couple of minutes, especially if this is your first time. It is very important that you keep on practicing these meditation strategies until you have conditioned your mind to automatically achieve this state just by thinking of it.

That is it for today.  I hope you enjoyed learning the process of meditation and how to release stress using this fun and relaxing method.

motivationalweightlosstips

It’s been a while since I last posted on motivational weight loss so here is another one for you!  Keeping a positive mindset is key but digging down and finding motivation can pull you out of hard times quicker than anything.  You can build motivation from many things but you can incorporate a few “mind tricks” to help you even further.  Here is a list of 3 motivational weight loss tips to keep you on the path to weight loss!

Think Blue

Yes, that’s right, blue.  The color blue triggers a natural appetite suppressant in the brain causing you to feel less hungry and results in less eating.  How many fast-food restaurants have you noticed that are decorated blue on the inside?… not many!

Try to eat your meals on blue plates, dress in blue, or cover your table with a blue tablecloth.  On the other hand, avoid the colors red, yellow, and orange while eating because this encourages eating.

Reflect on Yourself

This one may feel awkward at first but try it for yourself!  Hang a mirror on the wall or set one on the table so it faces you while you eat.  Looking at yourself in the mirror makes you think about what you are really putting in your body, as well as, keeps those weight loss goals in your mind.  One study determined that eating in front of a mirror cut the amount of food people ate by almost one-third!

Eat Slowly and Calmly

Eating slowly seems to be a thing of the past with the times we live in now!  Everything has to be done in a rush or nothing gets done.  Try to plan your meals when you can have a calm setting at the table.  Pull your spoon or fork away from your mouth after every bite and give yourself some time to chew.  Sip on some water frequently and mix in some entertaining stories with the person you are eating with about things that happened today.

Your brain will trail behind you stomach by 20 minutes or so when it comes to feeling full.  Eating slowly will allow your brain to catch up and tell you that it’s time to stop eating.

Rinse and Repeat

While seemingly simple, these mind games really do work!  The one that I find that does the best is the mirror on the wall.  I really start to second guess whether or not all the food on my plate is needed!  Keep a positive attitude and stay motivated!  Try to work in some if not all of these tips and your sure to see the benefits and how they will help you lose weight.

Take Care Everyone!

KFCGrilledChicken

In a push to a more healthy side of fast food, KFC has introduced their new grilled recipe.  Just how much better is this new chicken?  Over the past few days I have compiled information and tried it for myself but there is one matter that I found very shocking!

How Healthy Is It?

Comparing chicken to chicken, the “grilled” option is definitely much healthier than the previous fried option.  Below is a comparison between both grilled and fried based on nutritional facts.

Grilled

Breast = 180 calories and 4 grams of fat
Thigh = 140 calories and 9 grams of fatkfcgrilledlegs
Drumstick = 70 calories and 4 grams of fat
Wing = 80 calories and 4 grams of fat

Fried Original

Breast = 370 calories and 21 grams of fat
Thigh = 260 calories and 19 grams of fat
Drumstick = 110 calories and 7 grams of fat
Wing =   110 calories and 7 grams of fat

Fried Crispy

Breast = 490 calories and 31 grams of fat
Thigh = 370 calories and 27 grams of fat
Drumstick = 150 calories and 9 grams of fat
Wing = 150 calories and 10 grams of fat

As you can see, the new grilled option is about half that of its original and extra crispy choices.  The amount of sodium found in the grilled chicken is still pretty high at 440mg but at least it is a major improvement over the original at 1,050mg.  You can further reduce the calories of the chicken by removing the skin before you eat it.  This will also reduce the amount of saturated fats you take in as well.  The chicken also tastes more baked than it does grilled.  The next time I return I will ask a friend that works there if the chicken really is “grilled” and update this post in the comments section.

This is the Shocker Though!!

When KFC first released their new grilled chicken option to the public the PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) conducted a test that brought back some alarming results!  Scientists went to six different stores and purchased two samples from each location.  Of those 12 samples that were laboratory tested, all of them came back positive for PhIP, a chemical that is considered to be a carcinogen by the government.

In case you are not familiar with this, PhIP is part of a chemical family known as HCAs.  These have been linked to various forms of cancer, such as breast cancer, in dozens of studies.  Every sample of the grilled KFC chicken also tested positive for at least on additional type of HCA.  There is no further public information available to determine whether the issue has been resolved.

Conclusion

Even though the chicken has changed for the better, the sides have not.  Those sides can really sabotage your diet!  Maybe they will continue their trend and take it a step further by introducing some more healthier options for side items.  By far, the best option available now is the green beans.  While KFC is moving to a more health “conscious” side, it is still far from what you can call health food.  The chicken you grill at home will still be much better for you than that served from the restaurant.
