A post by Florist Singapore. Every famous writer has written about flowers, used them as symbols and as similies in their work. Literature is art in written form and writers, like artists understand the deep connection between people and flowers. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote "Flowers...are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world." Iris Murdoch stated "People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us." Flowers in literature may convey love, joy, beauty or strength. The American playwright, Tennessee Williams wrote " The violets in the mountains have broken rocks". Even tiny delicate flowers like violets have strength and tenacity. The symbolism is clear and poignant. Flowers in poetry and literature can be used to paint pictures in our minds. "Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare, And left the flushed print in a poppy there." (Francis Thompson-"The Poppy" ) "When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils;" (William Wordsworth-"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud") You can see the flowers in your mind. These poems are famous and beloved for the images they create in our brains. Roses, in particular, have been the subject of many famous lines. "My luve is like a red, red rose" (Robert Burns) "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet" (William Shakespeare-"Romeo and Juliet") "Tis the Last Rose of Summer"is a poem by Thomas More on the transitory nature of life. The symbolism of flowers is central to many poems. While writers and poets have used the symbolism of flowers for many purposes, perhaps the best quotes are those that convey joy and hope. "Deep in their roots all flowers keep the light." (Theodore Roethke) "Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature." (Gerard De Nerval) Whether used as symbols or for their own sake, flowers evoke emotions and feelings in every person who sees them. Flowers are, at their very heart, symbols of joy, hope and the continuation of life. They die in the winter and return every spring and they always have. It is the continuous rebirth that gives people of all cultures a sense of eternity; the belief that everything that dies will be reborn. It is, the reason flowers have, since prehistory, been presented as offerings to the dead. Flowers have been exchanged as gifts throughout the ages. They are a gift that can demonstrate emotions that people may not be able to articulate. The only reason anyone needs to send a gift of flowers is the desire to spread joy. Luther Burbank observed "Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul." When you give flowers, you don't need words, flowers say it all.
