Acne begins 2-3 weeks before the blemishes are visible on your skin. The surface of your skin, called the epidermis, is actually made up of dead skin cells.Your sebaceous gland beneath the skin secretes oil or sebum to keep your skin from becoming dry and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, there are times when the sebaceous glands become overactive and produce more oil than the body requires. The oils are left stuck on the pores. This blockage keeps the dirt inside the skin and the dirt then combines with the bacteria. The extra cells, although helpful in the fight against the oil and bacteria, contribute to further swelling or inflammation of the skin. The clogged, swollen pore with excess sebum is known as a pimple.

Although no particular reason can be assigned to "why does acne happens" but there are certain factors that lead to acne.

Several factors can lead to acne, including:

  • ·         Hormones
  • ·         Heredity
  • ·         Side effects of some medicines
  • ·         Reactions of some make-up and cosmetic products
  • ·         Friction from clothing and sporting equipment
  • ·         Pollution and humidity

Factors that do not lead to acne include:

  • ·         Unhealthy diet
  • ·         Dirt on the skin
  • ·         Day-to-day stress

Effective acne treatment focuses on slowing down the skin's production of oil, speeding up cellular renewal and fighting bacteria. People with acne-prone skin should clean their skin gently, without scrubbing, using mild cleansers. They may also benefit from:

  • ·         Over-the-counter treatments that include ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid
  • ·         Prescription treatments such as antibiotics, oral contraceptives and isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • ·         Cosmetic surgery procedures to reduce scarring

Blackheads are a type of acne called an open comedone. Blackheads are small “plugs” that develop in the pores of the skin. They are hard to get, and blackheads are the first stage of acne.

What Causes Blackheads?

Blackheads are caused when the over active oil producing glands in the skin become clogged with oil. This sebum then begins to harden in the pore. The excess oil gets occluded in the pores resulting in a ball of accumulated oil which, when exposed to air, turns black in color. This black top of the oil plug is then forced closer to the surface of skin by the oil hardening beneath it. This then causes the blackhead to be visible.

Another common cause of blackheads is that the skin is has not been cleaned thoroughly. When skin is not cleaned properly, dead skin cells accumulate within the pores. These dead cells then clog the pore opening which then results in oil build up, which we already know causes blackheads to form.

Yet another cause of blackheads is the use of too much makeup. Excessive use of moisturizes, foundations or sun screens can also have the same effect as the overuse of makeup.

Side Effects of Blackheads

Unfortunately, many of the presented blackheads treatments can cause dryness, irritation, redness, or even skin damage. The metal pieces in particular often cause damage with improper use, which is why ordinary users should stay away from them.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

The following are some tips for removing blackheads:

  • Keep the skin as clean and oil free as possible. Use natural or chemically prepared cleansers. Avoid soaps that may irritate the skin or any creams that leave an oily finish.
  • Use a gentle exfoliant to keep the dead cells off your skin and away from the pore openings.
  • Avoid harsh squeezing at the blackhead. Excessive squeezing can damage the skin surround the pore and can actually increase the size of the pore and cause the acne in the future.
  • A warm compress of water applied to the area of the blackhead followed by a very, very gentle pressure can help in clearing the clog from the pore.
  • Commercial “blackhead strips” which are basically a tape like substance that is placed over the nose and then pulled off will remove some blackheads that are at the surface. Caution should be used with these products and it is important to read the directions completely before deciding to use the strips or not.

Pores are actually tiny openings in your skin that provide a way for the oil glands underneath to lubricate and protect the surface of your skin. Pores enlarge during puberty, when oil glands in your skin begin to increase the amount of oil that they pump through your pores. The pores get bigger to handle the increased output.

Skin pores are the openings of hair follicles, oil glands, and sweat glands. Because they are inherited, you cannot change their size, no matter what the cosmetic firms tell you.

It is true that certain conditions may make pores “appear” larger or smaller. Oily skin and severe acne, for example, may widen the oil ducts to create the “large pore” appearance. Pores are likely to appear on the nose, cheeks, and chin. Squeezing of blackheads and pimples may also lead to permanently widened pores, some of which may actually be tiny, pitted scars.

Other conditions can make your pores look smaller temporarily. For instance, note what happens to your pores when you acquire a sunburn. They become considerably smaller due to the inflammation and swelling around the pores. Once the inflammation has subsided, the pores will return to their original appearance. Pinching or gently slapping the skin of the cheeks to make them pink has a similar, temporary pore-shrinking effect.

There is no scientific evidence to support the fact that pores can be made to open and close. Certain  facial masks, however, can produce a temporary “shrinking” effect. These products help remove excess oil from the skin surface that makes the skin feel cool and tight.

For those of you who think your facial pores are the largest, the ugliest, and the most noticeable, do the following:

  • Wash your face thoroughly with soap and water three times a day to prevent oils from accumulating, clogging up, and distending the pores.

  • Use a good, commercial astringent or face mask that makes you and your skin feel good.

  • Use only oil-free and water-based cosmetics and moisturizers.

  • And throw away your magnifying mirrors .

What is baby acne?

One thing that many parents are not prepared for is acneon their newborn baby. Baby acne is a common condition in newborn and it will usually go away fairly quickly. Baby acne maybe present from the birth, but typically appears at 3 to 4 weeks of age and last until your child is between 4 and 6 months old. Baby Acne can affect the face i.e. forehead, cheeks, chin or back and buttocks. Unlike, teen or adult acne, baby acne is harmless and usually resolves on its own within a few weeks.

Symptoms of baby acne

- Small red rashes or raised bumps predominantly on the cheeks, quite common on the chin and forehead also.
- Baby acne tends to become prominent when your baby cries and becomes hot and fussy.
- If the baby's skin becomes wet from spit-up, saliva or milk, the comdition may appear worse for several days.

Causes of baby acne

Baby acne occurs because of the mother’s hormones which go into the baby in the final months of pregnancy, that gets from you in the womb and through your breast milk. Since your baby isn't producing these levels of hormones herself, once you're done breastfeeding and they're out of his system, the acne will clear up.

How can baby acne be prevented?

Baby acne is a normal stage that is difficult to prevent. You can expect that these rashes will soon be a memory. Once the baby gets older (say 6 months), the oil glands will disappear, and you won't see the acne again. To prevent baby acne,below mentioned steps are followed;

  1. Identify the rash on your baby's face as acne, rather than other common skin conditions. Baby acne appears on a newborn's face as reddish skin covered with small whiteheads.
  2. Wash your baby's face gently with a mild baby friendly cleanser once a day. If you wash more often, it could irritate the acne and make it worse.
  3. Pat your baby's face dry to remove excess cleanser and grease.
  4. Wipe grease from your baby's face occasionally during the day with a plain, dry tissue.
How can it be treated?

Therefore, baby acne is not a condition to worry about. However, cleanse the face once a day using a gentle cleanser. Oils and lotions do not help, and may aggravate the condition. Have patience and the condition will be a distant memory in a few short weeks or months anyway.

Adult acne can really put a crimp on your life. Adult acne affects 25% of all adult men and 50% of adult women at some time in their adult lives. One third of adults affected with facial acne also have acne on their body. People can develop unpleasant acne or have an acne recurrence in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond. Some people who develop more severe cases of adult acne end up with the same depression and anxiety that teenagers experience through adolescence. Recent epidemiological studies show that there appears to be an increase in post-adolescent acne, and that the disease is lasting longer and is requiring treatment well into the mid forties." Regardless of when someone struggles with acne, it can be difficult to cope, and can cause depression and social anxiety in an adult the same way it can in a teen.

Normally there are 4 types of adult acne:

1) Comedo.

2) Pustule.

3) Nodule.

4) Cyst

Causes of adult acne

If you noticed the acne you had when you were 15 has returned in your 30s, rest assured, you're in good company. One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult acne. Here are a few facts about adult acne and how to rid your skin of it:

Treating adult acne is tricky. Adult acne treatment depends on the scarring of your skin and the degree of adult acne that has spread in your body. Most acne medications are geared to teens' oily skin, a bad choice for drier adult skin.

Cleansers:  Avoid too-strong gels and products containing beads or granules, which are abrasive and can irritate and worsen sensitive skin.

Creams and lotions: Use an over-the-counter retinol product to clean pores and help reduce fine wrinkles. Prevent discoloration and fade acne scars with products that contain salicylic and glycolic acids. And to spot-treat a breakout, use a product with benzoyl peroxide, which helps kill bacteria.

Prescription medications: The topical antibiotic clindamycin helps fight bacteria in the skin; so does tetracycline, another antibiotic, taken orally. Oral contraceptives and spironolactone, a blood pressure drug, can help balance hormones.

High-tech solutions: Laser and intense pulsed light treatments mainly target scars, but blue light therapy treatments kill acne-causing bacteria. These treatments are costly, though, so explore your other options first.

The following treatments can be effective for adult acne. First of all check your skin care products that you are using. A person who is infected with adult acne should limit sun exposure and should avoid oil-based cosmetics. It is important to keep the skin clean and well cared for, as well as including plenty of water, raw fruits, and vegetables in your daily diet. Some people may also go in for hormone therapy, which seeks to redress the body's hormonal imbalances by lowering androgen levels.

Treatment of adult acne

Adult acne is caused by sebum, an oily substance produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands. Although the causes of adult acne are unknown, possible causes include hormones, cosmetics, stress, and an increase of resistant bacteria. Women in particular often experience premenstrual flares, often around the mouth.

Date Published: Sep 24, 2009 - 6:25 pm

Acne is a skin problem that affects almost all teenagers. The condition results from the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands). The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that empties onto the skin surface through the hair follicle opening (pore). The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria that normally live on the skin to grow in the follicle openings. When this happens, pores become clogged and pimples develop.

In most cases, pimples occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne does not present a serious health risk, but severe acne can result in permanent scarring.

Why Do Some People Get Acne and Others Don't?

It is not clear why some people are more prone to acne than others. There is no exact cause of acne known, but one important factor is an increase in male sex hormones called androgens. Androgens cause the sebaceous glands (oil glands) to get larger and produce more sebum. Androgens also can increase because of hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills.

Another factor in the cause of acne is genetics. Cosmetics that have a greasy consistency may change the cells of the follicles, causing them to stick together and resulting in a plugged pore. Water-based products are less likely to cause acne.

Things that can make acne worse include:

  • Friction caused by leaning on or rubbing the skin; harsh scrubbing
  • Picking or squeezing blemishes
  • Pressure from bike helmets, backpacks, or tight collars
  • Changing hormone levels in adolescent girls and adult women two to seven days before the start of the menstrual period
  • Stress

Other factors that were previously thought to make acne worse do not seem to have an effect on the development of acne. These factors include chocolate, greasy foods, and dirty skin.

What Does Acne Look Like?

Acne can appear as one of the following:

  • Whiteheads: Small, hard bumps with a white centre.
  • Blackheads: Small, blocked pores. The black color is not from dirt. It may be from bacteria and matter that react with oxygen.
  • Papules, pustules or nodules: More serious lesions appearing red and swollen due to a lot of pus visible.
  • Cysts: Deep, painful, pus-filled lesions that can cause scarring.

How Is Acne Treated?

Acne will usually go away on its own, but it can take many years. There are treatments that can help clear acne more quickly. There are now a lot of treatments available for the treatment of acne. Don't put up with acne, get advice and get rid of it. Here are some of the current treatments that will help you to a better clearer, skin.

Treatments may include:

  • OTC topical drug treatments: Over-the-counter medications includes many forms gel, lotion, cream, soap, or pads. When these products are used regularly, they are moderately effective in the treatment of acne.
  • Prescription topical drug treatments: They are used to treat acne include benzoyl peroxide, antibiotics, tretinoin, adapalene, and azelaic acid.  Doctors often prescribe benzoyl peroxide so that they can make sure that their patients get the most desirable formulation (for example, cream, lotion or gel).
  • Prescription oral drug treatments: For patients with moderate to severe acne, doctors often prescribe oral antibiotics. They are thought to help control acne by curbing the growth of bacteria and decreasing inflammation. They are usually taken daily for a certain period.

Tips to Prevent Acne:

Here are tips that may help control acne.

  • Don't over wash or use harsh scrubs. Remember, acne is not caused by dirt. Too much cleaning can leave skin irritated and dry, triggering glands to produce more oil, increasing the likelihood of pimples.
  • Use oil-free  products on your face.
  • Don't pick blemishes. Picking can lead to more inflammation and permanent scarring.

Don't let acne define who you are. Do the things you can to improve your skin, and then get back to doing the things you enjoy.
