One of the most important commands your puppy will ever learn is the meaning of the word "no." It is critical that the puppy learns this command just as soon as possible. Understanding that the command must be obeyed instantly could save your dog's life. Running off and becoming lost, chasing a child or another animal into the road, or picking up and eating a harmful substance are not beyond the average dog's behavior. Being able to stop the action instantly is obviously important in these situations and using the word "no" is the shortest, quickest way to do so. One important piece of advice in using this and all other commands - never give a command that you are not prepared and able to enforce. The only way a puppy learns to obey commands is to realize that once issued, commands must be complied with. Learning the no command should start on the first day of the puppy's arrival at your home. Sit and Stay Commands The sit and stay commands are just as important to your dog's safety (and your sanity!) as the no command and learning to come when called. Even the very youngest preschool puppies learn the sit command quickly, especially if it appears to be a game and a food treat is involved. Your pup should always be on his collar and leash for lessons. Young puppies, even grown dogs for that matter, are not beyond getting up and walking away when they have decided that you and your lessons are boring. As in most cases with dogs, a food treat always seems to get the lesson across to the student. By placing a food treat in front of the dog, raising it over his head, and telling him to sit, the dog will most likely sit automatically as he follows the treat. If he accomplishes this, praise him lavishly and give him the treat as a reward. If this doesn't work, give the sit command immediately before lightly pushing down on your dog's hindquarters or gently scooping the hind legs from under him, molding him into a sit position. Praise your dog when he does sit, even though it is you who made the action take place. Continue holding the dog's rear end down and repeat the sit command several times. If your dog makes an attempt to get up, repeat the command yet again while exerting light pressure on the rear end until the correct position is assumed. A treat given as a reward will make him eager to repeat the command. Make your dog stay in this position for increasing lengths of time. Begin with a few seconds and increase the time as your lesson progresses over the following weeks. If your young student attempts to get up or to lie down, he should be corrected by simply saying, "Sit!" in a firm voice. This should be accompanied by returning the dog to the desired position.

It was once believed that no serious training should be undertaken until dogs were at least eight months old. Some trainers wouldn't consider working with a dog that was less than 12 or 14 months of age. However, the tide began to turn nearly 30 years ago through the research of noted canine behaviorist John Paul Scott. It was found that puppies can learn and can learn well far before the previously recommended ages. In fact, it was discovered that a puppy's most critical period of imprinting is between 3 and 14 weeks of age. Behaviorists began to realize that this time frame was also the most ideal time to mold a puppy's personality. Today, classes for puppies as young as eight and nine weeks of age are appearing around the country and the results have been nothing but positive. It is now believed that, in general, a dog will be more adaptable and receptive to advanced schooling when training takes place very early in life. Pups that have had the advantage of "preschool" training are continually proving to be more self-assured and able to meet a modern dog's increased social demands without being traumatized. Furthermore, the strange sights, sounds, and the distractions of these early classes are soon taken in stride by the youngster, and he is able to concentrate on the lessons at hand much more easily. Preschool lessons are not complicated or intense, but many of them will be important throughout the dog's entire life. There is no reason why a puppy cannot learn how to walk along nicely on p a leash when necessary or understand the meaning of the word "no." It doesn't take a canine wonder to learn simple things like this, and these lessons could also easily save your dog's life. A thorough understanding of how dogs learn and how they communicate can help you and your pet develop a relationship that far exceeds any that you may have had with dogs in your past. As many trainers have stressed over and over again, no dog, even the most highly trained, will automatically know all the things you will want him to know about living with you. All dogs are born with a clean slate; the writing is put on that slate by their experiences and their owners. It is very important that you write exactly what it is you want on that slate.

train puppyBelieve it or not, there isn't a breed of dog that can't be trained if you use the right puppy training tips. Some breeds may seem to be difficult learners, but this is more likely due to the trainer not being personality-specific in their approach to the dog, than it is the dog's inability to learn and be trained. With the proper approach, training a puppy is achievable, and any dog can be taught to be a good canine citizen.
