Is cPanel The Best?

There has to be a reason why almost every web hosting company uses cPanel. (Not including the web hosting companies who decide to pay lots of money to develop their own panel). cPanel is probably the most user friendly web panel to control your websites. In addition with WHM (reseller panel) it only takes a few clicks to change anything you may need to. You can add MySQL databases, domains, ftp accounts, email accounts, redirections, and sooo much more that would just make this blog a lot longer to read. A big bonus to cPanel is Fantastico. If your web host doesn’t have Fantastico then you are really missing out. You can install scripts like wordpress, phpbb, auction tools, phpnuke, and almost every popular script that is being used today directly in cPanel. There is no need to download the script and upload it to ftp. For the price and the capabilities of cPanel, there is no better option.

Free Web Hosting?

If you think you can get reliable web hosting and support from a free web hosting company, think again. The truth about free hosting is that they don’t really care about your service. The market today is all about profit, and it definately holds the quote “You get what you pay for”.

If you have a small website for personal use then free web hosting might be for you. But now in this day of age, you may find smaller companies with better prices and support then some of big corporations available. Just a thought you can take into consideration before paying your next invoice.

“Unlimited” Not So Unlimited

After a year of rising competition, you may notice most Shared Web Hosting plans now come with “Unlimited” Space and Bandwidth. You might ask, “how is it unlimited?”. Well the only answer to that question is the restrictions that apply. They can’t just give everyone “Unlimited” Space/Bandwidth and expect to keep their servers online. People would abuse the system. This is why most web hosting companies usually have their own “Terms of Service” (aka restrictions that can be changed at anytime), which if violated can result in a cancellation or termination of your service.

Most of the time, these are included limitations,

  • No backups
  • No file storage
  • No videos
  • No password protected content
  • No podcasts
  • No use of excessive bandwidth
  • And the list goes on…

Also, I know what your thinking. “Wait… did it just say No use of excessive bandwidth? I thought it was unlimited.” Well, even though it may be “unlimited***” you are still very limited in what you can actually do. Most up-to-date web hosting companies use what is called “enodes”. Everytime you upload or transfer a file onto your website, it creates a enode. Usually you are limited on how many enodes you can use per month, but the number varies and can be very large or very small. Since it is still Shared Web Hosting and other people are on the same dedicated server, they have to limit it some way right? But, why do they call it “unlimited”? The main reason and purpose is for advertising/marketing. There has been such competition that is has been very hard for everyone to catch up. So many hosts have just said, “Lets have it unlimited, that way no one can have a bigger package. It will all be about the price now”. Which in turn made many people sceptical. Even though many hosts offer their monthly price with a asterisk saying “Based on 2-year price discount” when the actual monthly price is $10 higher with a huge setup fee (not cool). The matter of fact is… there really is no such thing as “Unlimited” Shared Web Hosting. It is merely a gimmick to get more money out of your pocket.
