This is a great question!
I can say sadly, our church is not. When it is brought up, the rest of the staff and key leaders think we are.
But I can give example after example where we have failed.
Our "intentional" currently is limited to those who fit a certain mold.
So what is everyone else d... (more)

Hey everyone,
In our children's ministry we give all the volunteers bright red t-shirts with the name of our program on it IN ADDITION to nametags they wear around their neck. I've noticed the volunteers wearing the t-shirt less and less, and when I ask why, they say it is difficult to wear the sam... (more)

Here are some sites that discuss developmental stages. I would use these as part of any training you do.
This website contains a nice overview:

I have had some challenges with other adults (God Bless them) who want to minister to kids, but at an adult level. We have opportunity at our church while the kids are in big church to have altar time (very precious, by the way) but when other adults come and want to minister it is not at a level in... (more)

And if it gets seen here, think of the potential on FB. It amazes me that people, even those in the ministry, would share their frustrations with their boss or spouse or neighbor or whoever on Facebook or MySpace. Wowzers that is looking for trouble.

Our children loves Jana Alayra, they can sing same songs every Sunday but would not feel bored. I think those DVD with motions/lyrics are prefect for our small church.

Marty,
I think some of what you are running into is a cultural thing. There is quite a bit of American church that doesn't translate to Canada. There is more cynicism toward churches so focusing on the relationships over and above the splashy environments is more important. That doesn't mean you do... (more)

I LOVED the book, I read it in just a few days and cried and laughed.
We went to the movie and cried at the end. Not sure if I would show it for Family Movie nights but it was good.

I think certain factors like money, space, ministry giftings etc. would drive the way some of us adapt to ministry in many areas including atomosphere and enviroment.
But when those are not factors is the emerging philosophy moving away from vibrant and exciting spaces? We are really grappling wit... (more)

Knowing whether or not to use a puppet, video, etc. is a matter of prayerfully considering what will work best for the kids you are working with, and being willing to follow the Holy Spirit's lead in spite of your own ideas. There is no formula, just wisdom.

That's an interesting observation. I was a children's pastor at a large church in the late 1990s, and our emphasis was definitely on the big, splashy "kids service" type ministry, with a large group/small group time (think Promiseland). After being out of that area of ministry for several years, I t... (more)
