What Is A Good Scedule For Training A Foal?Soon I'm buying a 4 month old filly, but won't get it till weaned at 4 1/2 moths. And I was wondering, when should I teach it certain things like picking up hooves and cleaning her, saddle breaking her, and getting her used to a bit. I know the two later won't come till later, but what about the other things, and is there anything else I should know about that I should do with this filly while it's still little? [ Read More ]

I Have A Six Week Old Foal And A Two Week Old Foal. What Kind Of Training Can I Do With Them? The six week old has had a halter on but hasnt been led around. The two week old was not imprinted at birth and is very shy and will run away form any one who approaches him. Should the Training be done in the same area as the mothers or should I lead him around the property away from the mom. Any suggestions? How can I get the two week old to begin to interact with people? [ Read More ]

Foal Training Books? What are some good books that you have read on Foal Training. Like imprinting, haltering, and ground manners. In case my mare is pregnant I wan't to make sure that right away I teach him these things incase we can't find a trainer quickly. I also wan't to work with him alot so I wan't to know what to do. Also if my mare isn't pregnant i want to breed her, my dad would also like a Foal aswell. And if you know any good books that deal with a mare being pregnant that would be great as well. Before any of you say something like get a trainer you don't know how to train a foal. Its not a dog they may be cute now but when there older they can be dangoures. Or don't breed her there are to many un wanted foals already, or even shouldn't you know this already. Dont! Thank you. all i wan't to know are some good books to read. THANK YOU! [ Read More ]

Foal Training And Handling Tips And Tricks! :)?I have been ridding for 5 years have owned 2 young horses, one I got at 2 years old, the other I got at 4 years old. The barn that I board my horses at bred their 2 mares. They are into showing buckskins, duns, red duns, and grulla horses. So they bred their dun mares to produce colored foals. They also wanted fillies so that they could breed them when they were older. The 1st baby came out as wanted (a dun filly), but the 2nd one was born 2 days ago as a solid black colt. They want to sell him because they have no use for him, but he's so sweet I would love to have him. I expressed how I felt about this colt that I would love to have him if they didn't want him, they said they would talk about it, but that they really had no use for him. He is Quarter horse, so I was planning on Training him later showing him. I have helped raise a Foal before have a trainer to help me, but I want to know what tips tricks you guys know of for raising Training foals. Thanks! This Foal already loves me, he comes to me when I go to his stall, he lays on my lap, ect. I know that not all tricks work for every horse, but what tricks have worked for your horses? I can then change them a bit to fit my horse. I'm so excited! He's so cute, he's black but he has some dun factor in darker black, and he has the tiniest white dot on the tip of his nose! Sorry, I just can't believe he's going to be mine (well at least I'm 95% positive he'll be mine!)! [ Read More ]

Need Help With Halter Training Foal!?I have an 11 day old half-arab Foal and am having trouble with halter-training. I had planned to get her used to the halter her first few days... but things happened and time flew by... she is 11 days old now. i can sometimes walk up and touch her using approach-and-retreat, other times she hides behind her mom. i tried slipping her halter on her today after introducing it to her and rubbing it all over her. before i could secure it she freaked out and reared and fought. i tried restraining her using one arm under tail one arm around chest but she was too strong. there was no way i was getting that halter on. on top of all that, now she's frightened of me again and doesn't let me within 10-15 feet. help! any suggestions??? Training Tips For A Foal Who Has A Grouchy Mama??ok soo prolly anything would help me out. Im gonna buy this Foal when he is weaned and the problem is that I want to just work with him asap before he gets big and bossy. They are just in a pasture and until I buy and move him I wont have access to a stall or round pen or smaller inclosed area where it would be alot easier to work with them instead of just trying it in that large pasture. The mama is really grouchy and doesnt like to be caught or messed with and doesnt have very good manners. The only way I could catch her and work with the Foal is at feeding time. I just dont want to go like a whole 6 months without working with this foal. Hell prolly end up picking up her bad habits if he's not worked with and I dont want him to get all pushy and not be halter-broke as a 6 month old. Ide like to start while he is still young and little and before he starts to pick up her grouchyness towards people to. Any tips at all on how to train a Foal b4 its to late? [ Read More ]
