How Different Are Safety Specs On Japanese-market Cars From AUS/ NZ Versions?I've bought a 2006 Mitsubishi Colt Plus 1.5 CVT which now turns out to be a Japanese used-car import. How different from NZ/ AU-new are the safety specs of these cars? The dealer claims it has the same airbags, same body construction down to the last screw, same everything as the official NZ version. I am finding that hard to believe, as Japan, if I remember correctly, is the Wild West when it comes to safety specs, and they tend to have nothing. Does anybody know how things really are? Cheers. Should I Buy A Land Rover Range Rover Or Discovery Used?I've found good deals on both models. I've always had Japanese cars, but the Used Japanese SUVs I've seen hold their value better and are almost double the price of the Land Rovers. I work from home and last year only drove 7,000 miles; so I figure I can deal with the low mpgs. Anyway I'm pretty set on getting a Land Rover. Which model is preferred? And what are some common problems I should look out for when I'm checking out Used models? I live in Florida where there are as many shady Used Car Dealers as there are mosquitos. What should I look out for? [ Read More ]

New Car Or Used Luxury Cars With My Budget?I am trying to decide if I should go with buying a new Car or a Used luxury. If I decide on a new car, this will be my first new Car ever. I've been saving money till now and my budget is set at 25k. I went to a toyota dealer and got a deal for new 2008 toyota camry LE for $23,300 which includes all fees (destination, tax, dmv, etc) I double confirmed that this is the final walk out price, and he literally said 'not a dime more.'. The options includes sunroof and leather seats (the leather on the seats are not from the factory. they will just put a leather cover over the existing seats, but to bare eyes you don't see the difference). I realize that this is a good deal, but at the same time I also want to look into getting a 2-3 years Used Japanese luxury cars with low milage. I am thinking maybe a 2005 Lexus GS, or Infinity G35, with less then 35k miles on it. (cont.) My friend's close friend is a dealer and he said he should be able to get me those class cars at my budget. So I have everything laid out on the table, and I'm trying to decide whether I should just go with a camry or luxury. I really want a luxury car, but getting a new Car has its own benefits also. If it was YOU, what would YOU do? Would you go for a new Car or Used luxury? [ Read More ]

About To Buy A Car, Please Help Here!?I am planning on buying a Used Car from a dealer and am attempting to negotiate the price. I just found out that they got a Car in but the fuses, struts, and brakes needed to be replaced. It’s a great, (very popular) Japanese car, year 1999, and with 95,200 miles on it. I need to know what negotiating points I can use because I know the mechanical work done on the Car can’t possibly mean that the person took very good Car of it. Am I right? Anyhow, they are asking $6200, and I don’t have that much to spend. I have about $5000.00 Can I do it? How? Also: Do salesmen have a tendency to keep trying to get you to come back and look at the car, even if you said you would? He keeps pressuring me to come back in. Finally: the last odometer rating on carfax was at 85000. Why is this? The Maintenance was already done on it. I don't have to do it myself. It's a 99' Accord. Hopefully this will help! Air Pollution And Environment Protection From Car Industries? With all the upcoming news about how G8 is trying to solve the air problems and temperature rising issues of the Earth, isn't the solution been already presented in front of them? One may ponder over the 3 questions I am trying to make sense over myself. 1. Japanese Car firms already coming out with technology in 2001 with the introduction of cars with no fuel intake at all - all with the technology of using solar panes underneath Car roof with batteries recharged by heat energy and can last up to almost 14 hours of non stop travelling. But no Car Dealers are coming out with the idea to commercialised these cars at all. 2. Taiwan minister on recent news of travelling in his new Car with fully usage of solar powered batteries intake - if it appear on news, then why is the idea of commercialising these great technology upfront in Asia? 3. With all the funds around the world for scientist to work out with making solar powered products to help environment, is it all just talks? [ Read More ]

Japanese Made Cars...???(details Inside)?I am looking to buy a Used Car and I would like to spend maximum $4000. I want to buy a Japanese made Car and not an American made Car since they are not as strong as Japanese made cars. The only Japanese made cars I know are Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda. Are there any other Japanese made cars I am leaving out on the list? And is it better to buy a Used Car from an owner or a dealer? Thank you for your responses in advance, [ Read More ]

Why Are Auto Dealers Using Employee And Military Discount Prices When Advertising? In my local newspaper, auto sale sections, all the prices advertised (U.S. cars) are using words qualified only for “Employee price”or “Military price”, etc., as if the Dealers are only trying to sell to auto company’s own employees. And as if military service personnel are everywhere. If I, who do not belong to any of such category, ask for a price quote, it will be much higher. Why don’t they advertise regular, normal price in the first place? People with good credit, able to afford to buy cars, are usually intelligent, and do not play games. I do not see Japanese brand cars have such practice, so I am buying Japanese. Bad timing for my questions. Actually it just happens to be the time when GM is promoting 'Employee Pricing'. My question was referring to the common practice that has been prevalent for long long time, even when no 'Employee Pricing' ongoing. [ Read More ]

How Can I (a Layperson) Check An Old Truck To Avoid Buying A 'lemon'?I have to buy a Used truck (15 yrs.+) to export it to Africa (from Dubai). I am not an expert and would like to know what to check. The salespersons at the truck-shop were nice (NOT car-dealer friendly, but more genuine :-)) and even helpful, when I was there with a truck driver to have a look at some trucks the other day. However, next time I have to go alone and finally buy it and can´t get any 'independent' advice. Details of the truck: ISUZU 10 wheels double-diff 10 tons 1992 (but they also have 1990, 1994 a.s.o.) So, what 'tests' can I do or what issues should I check to avoid the most important obvious problems with such a big truck? Price is between $ 22000 and $28.000, depending on the age of the truck, which appears to be approximately the same as on Japanese Used truck dealer-ship websites. Thanks! [ Read More ]

Is A 2001-2003 BMW 530i Manual Expensive To Maintain/service After The Free Dealer Service Period?I was thinking about purchasing a Used BMW 5 series and was wondering about maintenance costs. I know that BMW owners do get free service for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles but I was wondering about costs after this period. I'm sure the dealer is expensive but if I were to maintain the Car myself would it be difficult? I am very familiar with Japanese cars but have never owned or worked on a european car. Any BMW owners out there that can give me some advise would be great! [ Read More ]

Question About Buying A Used 2004 BMW 525i Or 2005 530i?My parents are currently leasing a Nissan Altima, and we have found it to be far less reliable than we have hoped. The lease is up this September, and my dad still wants to purchase the Altima at the end of the lease. I am trying to convince them to go for a far more reliable car, and I know that BMW's are probably the most reliable cars on the road. When the Germans make a car, they basically design the Car piece by piece making sure each piece can withstand the test of time, something other manufacturers, including the Japanese, don't do. So, these are the vehicles in question. 525i: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u car_id=255837247 dealer_id=100015930 car_year=2004 rdm=1230069022409 model=5_SERIESCLASS_SERIES num_records=25 systime= make2= highlightFirstMakeModel= start_year=2004 keywordsfyc= keywordsfyc= keywordsrep= keywordsrep= engine= certified= body_code=0 fuel= awsp=false search_type=both distance=100 marketZipError=false search_lang=en showZipError=n make=BMW keywords_display= color= scarid=253247959 page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform min_price= drive= default_sort=priceASC seller_type=b max_mileage= style_flag=1 sort_type=priceASC address=08879 advanced=y end_year=2010 doors= transmission= max_price= cardist=27 530i: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=u car_id=247559615 dealer_id=1388699 car_year=2005 rdm=1230069022409 model=5_SERIESCLASS_SERIES num_records=25 systime= make2= highlightFirstMakeModel= start_year=2004 keywordsfyc= keywordsfyc= keywordsrep= keywordsrep= engine= certified= body_code=0 fuel= awsp=false search_type=both distance=100 marketZipError=false search_lang=en showZipError=n make=BMW keywords_display= color= scarid=253247959 page_location=findacar%3A%3Aispsearchform min_price= drive= default_sort=priceASC seller_type=b max_mileage= style_flag=1 sort_type=priceASC address=08879 advanced=y end_year=2010 doors= transmission= max_price= cardist=13 A few questions: 1. 525i only has 184 bhp, is this underpowered since it is such a large vehicle? 2. What kind of MPG do they both get? 3. Am I right in thinking that this Car would be far more reliable than this stupid Altima which seems to be losing horse power by the day. Any other cars like this worth considering that would be reliable? Much appreciated, happy holidays to all. [ Read More ]
