At the IEC 73rd General Meeting, which took place last month in Tel Aviv, a special workshop was held on "e-mobility". Called "International Standards for E-mobility – A Necessity for Mass Deployment", it gathered together managers and R&D engineers from electric vehicle and infrastructure developers, key strategists from major Smart Grid programmes and experts from IEC TCs (Technical Committees). The workshop was chaired by Ziva Patir, Vice-President of Better Place, in charge of international standardization efforts.

Electric cars are definitely touted as the personal vehicle of the future - practically all the auto manufacturers are working on them - but it's ...

Will mitigate the CO2 problem using the actual fuel infrastructure.

Recycling CO2 emissions into renewable liquid fuels can directly and immediately reduce the demand for liquid petroleum fuels - this is based on Carbon Science recently announced R first results.

Based on a projected industrial scale CO2 to fuel conversion efficiency range of 40% to 80%, Carbon Sciences believes its breakthrough CO2-to-Fuel technology can provide a significant portion of the world's liquid fuel supply.

Fuels produced with CO2-to-Fuel technology are essentially carbon neutral and do not contribute to global warming. In fact, their use mitigates CO2 that would have been ...

In order to reduce energy consumption you need to understand how much energy you are using and when. To do that, hook up a power logger such as the Fluke 1735 to the feeders or service. For a 3-phase wye systerm there will be connections: three phase voltages, neutral voltage, three phase currents and neutral current. Set the network topology to wye or delta to match the system you are monitoring. Set the recording time -- 15 minute intervals over a 30 day period is typical. After 30 days, download the data and review the measurements. Find average current or power ...

Who hasn't ever had their phone battery die on them and no-one around has the same make of charger to lend? Or have you had to buy new chargers every time you get a new phone? Well, these problems are set to become things of the past, as yesterday, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations' agency for telecom, said it has given its stamp of approval "to an energy-efficient one-charger-fits-all new mobile phone solution". At last!

The new Universal Charging Solution (UCS), will enable the same charger to be used for all future handsets, regardless of make ...

A group of teenagers from a local youth club in the City of Lausanne have just installed a pedal-driven lighting system on their football pitch that allows them to play into the darker hours of the winter evenings.

Working with a team of engineers from the sustainable renewable energies group, Association pour le développement des énergies renouvelables (ADER) under the direction of Eric Ecoffey, Sebasol, the youth team leader, Daniel Kohlbrenner, helped them put their human energy idea together.

Although it's probably a first, there's nothing really revolutionary about the system. It works on the basis of ...

The technology news website CNET.com has reported that the SAE J1772 charging system and coupler is to be voted the standard connection for plug-in vehicles. Rather than having cars from different manufacturers use a variety of plugs, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has developed a five pin smart plug which can be used with 120V or 240 V single phase electrical systems. Read the article on CNET.com.

This would mean that charging stations throughout the world could plug in to any standard electric vehicle in the same way nozzles at petrol stations are standardized to fit either ...

The IEC is holding its annual general meeting in Tel Aviv this week with more than 1000 experts from 60 countries. High on the agenda are electric cars and the standardization issues around them (think plugs and sockets!). We had an excellent workshop featuring NIST's George Arnold (the man behind US Smart Grid efforts) and IEC experts from Techncial Committee 69 which is working on the electric plug. Shai Agassi of Better Place will be speaking here and we hope to be able to interview him. Local media coverage in English includes this piece in the Jerusalem Post.

The name of the Chinese city, Rizhao, literally means “first to get sunshine”, of which they have plenty.

Rizhao is close to the city of Qingdao, famous for its Tsingtao beer. In the near future it's likely it will develop its own international reputation since it has pledged to become the first carbon-neutral city in China.

Rizhao is one of China's poorest cities and yet, thanks to government subsidies, 99% of the city centre's buildings are already covered with solar panels that are used to heat up water.

China has become the world’s largest market for ...
