Disposable
batteries did transform technology and let to the advent of a range of
portable electronic devices that were powered by them. However, since
most of these batteries end up in the landfill after they’re
discharged, rechargeables are considered a better option for the
environment.
Industrial designer Jon West of Indakind Designs
is making sure that rechargeable batteries have an even smaller carbon
footprint, with a solar sticker...

Solar-proponents today hailed as a “major victory” a decision by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
(FERC) that on-site solar generating projects (rooftop panels for
example) owned by a third party are not subject to regulatory oversight
by FERC.
Rhone Resch, CEO of the industry trade group, Solar Energy Industries Association,
said that: “Recognizing that FERC does not have jurisdiction over
on-site solar generating projects removes a great...

The United States and China announced on Tuesday a package of cooperative agreements
on clean energy and climate change that are remarkable in both breadth
and ambition.
The cluster of seven initiatives, partnerships, action
plans, and research centers covers a range of low-carbon energy
strategies from electric cars to energy efficiency technologies.
These agreements follow on the heels of last Sunday’s announcement
at the Asia-Pacific...

Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd just can’t seem to stay out of the
news lately.
News outlets have mentioned the Chinese solar
manufacturer’s name in connection with—among other things—a potential import tariff hike on solar panels, Pakistan’s incipient solar market and, most recently, Suntech’s plans for its first U.S. plant, around Phoenix, AZ. Now, Forbes (via Reuters) reports that the Asian powerhouse aims to grow its share of the U.S. solar...

Trina is trading down 2.87% at $44.26. The stock is extended, having risen some 500+% from the March low.
That said. I don't think the headline overstates the advantages TSL has over the competition. A couple years ago management had a reputation
for lousy shareholder relations. No one talks about that now. Their
design and execution of the company's business model has been superb.
From an almost fanatical attention to costs to the...

Applied Quantum Technology
(AQT) has lined up a customer who plans to assemble AQT's solar cells
of copper, indium, gallium, sulfur and selenium into panels for an
installation in Mexico.
Unlike competitors who use similar compounds, AQT will be rolling
out cells in the familiar square shape of conventional crystalline
silicon cells.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based AQT plans to announce its first customer,
a Chinese company with a factory in...

The big story in solar recently — one of them, at least — was the
decision earlier this week by the New York legislature to allow local
governments to enter the solar-payback-through-property-tax business.
(See our story on the NY law, here.)
I’d like to report that the concept is simple and implementation is a snap. I’d like to, but I can’t. It’s complicated.

The solar industry has
historically focused on increasing energy conversion efficiencies at
the cell level.
However, as the industry matures, commercialization
practices have come into play, resulting in an augmented awareness of
solutions through balance of system (BOS) improvements and enhancing
the efficiency of existing installations at the panel level.
Because the performance of a system rarely corresponds to total
capacity, especially...
